FROM MMI’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR While visiting Ukraine recently, I had the opportunity to meet Lydia, a woman who had received cataract surgery 2 days earlier. Lydia had been living in the conflict area of the Ukraine-Russia border when she moved to Kiev to live in a pastor’s home. The pastor and members of the church gave her clothes and she was introduced to MMI’s partners. She returned to the clinic full of thanks and praising God for her sight. Although MMI’s efforts in Ukraine have started only recently, Lydia’s gratitude is a result of MMI’s efforts from 20 years ago. Let me explain. MMI led its first 2-week project in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1997. In 2001, MMI established a health care center in Masazir. The center has continued to provide health care to those in need under the leadership of Mr. Tofik Teymurov. As Mr. Teymurov’s vision for Eastern Europe has grown, so has the impact of MMI. He is now sharing his time between Ukraine and Azerbaijan, providing leadership. This is the way of MMI. The investment of those before us, both project participants and financial donors, continues to flourish. INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM UPDATES Ukraine Tofik Teymurov & Dr. Emil Alibeili are providing vision screenings and cataract surgery in Khmelnitsky, Ukraine.
Peru Architect designs for a new building to house the existing MMI Peru ongoing programs of Physical Therapy, Optical, and Dental are pending approval with the Ministry of Health. Construction will commence on donated land in 2018.
Rwanda/Zambia Primary and surgical care teams to Rwanda and Zambia provided $579,009 in care to 1,199 patients in 2017.
Bolivia In Bolivia, building plans for an MMI health center are underway on land purchased with a generous financial contribution. In the meantime, Dr. Jimmy Borda will be treating vision patients and providing specialty retina services at a rental facility.
