Webinar on Apprenticeship Data WDQC and the National Skills Coalition hosted a panel of experts to discuss apprenticeships in the United States and the current state of apprenticeship data. The webinar also showcased how North Carolina is using this information to serve its workers and employers. View the webinar slides or recorded webinar on our event page.

Federal Updates The Senate Appropriations Committee passed a Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 appropriations bill for Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education and Related Agencies, which would generally maintain current funding levels for workforce data. The bipartisan Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking is starting to take shape, with a majority of members appointed. WDQC has been joined by other organizations in calling for the Commission to review a number of critical issues in federal data to improve postsecondary education and workforce development.  The Workforce Information Advisory Council (WIAC) will hold its first public meeting July 13-14, in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration announced a new Unemployment Insurance Data Dashboard with more aggregated wage information.

Data in the States Last month, Arizona enacted legislation that will allow the Governor’s Economic Opportunity Office to share employment data for supporting the evaluation of the state's workforce and education programs, and contribute to labor market information. WDQC worked with the state to develop and pass the legislation. California Edge Coalition, a non-partisan advocacy group, held a briefing for state legislative staff and agency officials: “Data to Serve Policy, Programs, and People: Reinventing California’s Education and Workforce Data Systems.” Indiana and Minnesota shared their regional dashboards and tools during the recent Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) and Labor Market Information (LMI) Institute conference in Minneapolis. WDQC on the Road Director Rachel Zinn spoke at a workshop in Washington, D.C., about state and local governments' use of data. The federal Committee on National Statistics organized the event as part of a panel examining ways to improve federal statistics for policy research. Policy Analyst Jenna Leventoff traveled to Maryland and Tennessee to learn more about their state longitudinal data systems, recent accomplishments, and pending developments.

Partner Resources  The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) held a Capitol Hill briefing in partnership with Salt Lake Community College on the Higher Education Act and Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act reauthorizations. The State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO) addresses what data are collected for postsecondary student unit record data systems and how this information is used, in its Strong Foundations 2016 report. Advance CTE has partnered with other organizations through the New Skills for Youth initiative to launch the Learning that Works Resource Center, a new web-based collection of research, policies, and tools to support Career Technical Education and career readiness for all learners.  The Lumina Foundation held an event on Capitol Hill to discuss how data show the barriers that minority students are facing in postsecondary education.
