JAN 27

I hate the word moderation, because it’s used SO frequently and inconsistently that it really means NOTHING anymore. The truth is, the IDEA of moderation is fantastic. The idea that we don’t need to completely restrict anything from our diet, but rather, only enjoy it in “moderation.” The problem: no one knows what moderation means these days. It is not defined, and instead becomes an excuse for people to continue to indulge in less healthy choices. To some people, eating in moderation means eating McDonald’s once a week, and to some, it’s once a year. To some, eating any type of sweet once a week is enjoying those less healthy items “in moderation,” but to some, a sweet treat is needed every day, and we justify it as moderation because we haven’t had a donut in a month, even though we had a cookie yesterday.

Moderation Mantra “I will consume a primarily whole foods diet, consisting of foods and ingredients that fuel my body. I will consume as few processed foods and foods that require a package or nutrition label as possible. When I feel like indulging, for a special occasion or otherwise, I will do so in moderation. These indulgences include all not food-as-fuel items, such as processed foods, baked desserts, fried foods, candy, chocolate (including dark chocolate), alcohol, and pizza.”

Ultimately, we have to stop lying to ourselves. We have to stop justifying the choices we make because we don’t want to admit that our diets aren’t as solid as they could be. I’m not saying that you have to throw out all of your processed foods or never enjoy a slice of cake. But I am saying that we’re fooling ourselves to think that consuming these regularly instead of “moderation” are FOOD AS FUEL choices.
