01 The opportunity

The PGA in Scotland Modern Apprenticeship Programme 2015/16

The golf business is larger than you know and professional golf career opportunities for qualified and trained individuals are more varied than you can imagine.

The programme is aimed at school leavers, aged between 16 - 19, who are not currently in further education or full-time employment.

Golf in Scotland is now a £1 billion industry, which employs more than 20,000 people*. A large number of these positions are held by PGA Professionals who carry out a huge variety of roles, ranging from full-time playing professionals, to managers, directors, referees, administrators and more. The PGA is delighted to announce the launch of the Modern Apprenticeship (MA) Programme, supported by Galvin Green/GORE-TEX® Products, which will provide developmental employment and education opportunities for young people in Scotland, who have a keen interest in a future career as a PGA Professional.

02 The commitment

As a PGA in Scotland Modern Apprentice you will be employed by a PGA Professional on a fixed term contract for a minimum of 13 months and be paid a salary of at least £3.30 per hour for a minimum of 16 hours per week. You will support the PGA Professional by fulfilling a variety of roles at the golf club. This may include providing retail assistance in the Professional’s shop, supporting daily operations in the clubhouse and assisting in organising and running tournaments and other club events. This will enable you to gain experience in the delivery of good customer service across a range of golf club operations and you may also have an opportunity to learn about green-keeping and the effective preparation of golf courses.

Through the programme, you will complete the SVQ in Leisure Management (with a golf focus) with the Sports Academy of Scotland, as well as all SQA Core Skills at Intermediate 2. PGA Professionals will mentor and support you through this programme and offer a broad introduction into the business of golf. The intention of this programme is to provide a quality entry route into the formal PGA Training Programme, the MA is an investment in your future.

03 General information

The MA Programme is managed by the Sports Academy of Scotland on behalf of The PGA in Scotland and all partners will work together closely to deliver this exciting new project which can provide an entry route into the formal PGA Training Programme. The MA programme is intended to provide an education and employment opportunity for a young person contemplating a future in golf. All Modern Apprentices participating in this programme will be provided with additional access to education and development opportunities to enhance their experience through the partnership between the Sports Academy of Scotland, The PGA in Scotland and Galvin Green/GORE-TEX® Products.
