MONTANA SOCCER GRIZ SET TO OPEN 2017 SEASON ON THE ROAD
Montana will travel to Boise, Idaho and Logan, Utah this week to take on Mountain West foes Boise State (Friday) and Utah State (Sunday). The matches mark the start of a new chapter of Griz soccer, one that features a unique balance of 12 returning letterwinners and 14 newcomers. “We’re really excited to get going,” head coach Mark Plakorus said. “I’ve been really impressed with how our upperclassmen have led the freshmen, both on and off the field. I think our players came in fit and prepared from the summer, and we’ve had a strong fall camp. Now we get to put it out on the field, against another opponent, and see how we stack up.” Friday’s opener will begin at 5 p.m. MT, with live statistics available through GameTracker. For Sunday’s 1 p.m. kickoff at Utah State, fans can stream the match for free through the Mountain West Network. • Montana went 9-6-5 in 2016 and tied for third in the Big Sky with a 5-2-3 league record. The No. 4 Grizzlies lost 1-0 to No. 5 Eastern Washington in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky tournament. • UM returns eight starters and 12 letterwinners, including All-Big Sky Conference second-team performers Chanelle Pederson and Hallie Widner. The Griz reached as high as No. 9 in last season’s NSCAA Pacific Region rankings. • The Grizzlies return all but two of their goal scorers from 2016. Filling the vacancy of defenders are a half dozen prep stars: Avery Adams (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Gabbi DeMarce (Rapid City, S.D.), Taylor Hansen (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.), Emily Peters (Bremerton, Wash.), Caitlin Rogers (Murrieta, Calif.) and Claire Steffe (Castle Pines, Colo.) all signed in February.
CHALLENGING SCHEDULE
Looking at the 2017 schedule, Plakorus believes that this year’s slate may be the toughest he’s ever assembled.
Mikee Furrow (Caldwell, Idaho) and Morgan Meatovich (Las Vegas, Nev.) are incoming forwards, Ally Shelton (Ventura, Calif.) and Raye Burton (Centennial, Colo.) are midfielders, and Alexa Coyle (Bozeman, Mont.) and Rita Lang (Sherwood, Ore.) can play either forward or midfield. Kennedy Yost, a redshirt freshman transfer from the University of Colorado, is also a forward.
The Griz begin the season on the road, at Boise State (Aug. 18) and Utah State (Aug. 20) of the Mountain West. They’ll return home to host the Montana Cup – vs. Air Force and San José State on Aug. 25 and 27 – before embarking on the road for three of the next four weekends of non-conference play. During that stretch, UM will face Power-5 opponents Nebraska in Pullman, Wash. (Sept. 3), Iowa in Iowa City (Sept. 8), Oregon in Eugene (Sept. 15) and Washington State in Missoula (Sept. 17).
The group of newcomers spans from eight states: three each from California and Colorado, and one apiece from Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota and Washington.
But the games against the “bigger schools” are exciting for the Griz. In 2015, they beat Iowa. In 2016, they took down Purdue on the road. They’ve also played Washington State and Missouri to overtime.
The group features several conference and state champions, in addition to a handful of club stars. Rogers twice advanced to the final eight at the US Youth Soccer National Championships with Legends FC, while Hansen won an ECNL national championship with San Diego Surf in 2014. Adams and Steffe both played for Real Colorado, an ECNL team that finished sixth in the nation in 2014. Additionally, Coyle was a national champion skier while Lang was born in Portugal and played for her nation’s U16 and U19 national teams.
“Every game is a lesson, and we’ve learned a lot about what it takes to get to the next level,” Plakorus said.”
FILLING THE VOID
The variety of teams UM will face will force it to see different styles of play and adapt on the fly. Plakorus also noted that it will challenge his players and make them uncomfortable – in a good way. All of this, ideally, will prepare the Griz for what they’ll see in the Big Sky Conference, and hopefully in the NCAA tournament down the road.
PICKED TO FINISH 3RD
The Griz return the majority of their talent from a year ago, but will look to fill the void of several key pieces. Gone from last year’s team are starters Tess Brenneman, Mary Gintz and Kailey Norman.
The Big Sky Conference announced the 2017 preseason soccer poll on Aug. 7, with Montana picked to finish third out of 11 teams. UM received 76 points in the poll, which was voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Brenneman was a two-time first-team All-Big Sky conference selection, while Norman was named the 2016 Big Sky Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. Gintz started 59 games for the Griz.
Eastern Washington, which won the Big Sky tournament as a No. 5 seed in 2016, is the preseason favorite, earning 95 points and eight of the 11 firstplace votes. Northern Arizona is predicted to finish second, receiving 80 points and one first-place vote; EWU beat NAU in last year’s championship game. Idaho, the 2016 regular-season champion and last year’s preseason favorite, is just behind UM with 75 points and one first-place vote. Northern Colorado is the other school to earn a first place vote, receiving one and 68 total points, for fifth place.
“The one thing you can’t stop doing is losing players,” Plakorus said. “We had some players who played significant minutes and made a big impact on our team. We’ll feel their loss, but there’s also players who have been watching them and learning from them. I think the mark of a good program is that you’re sad to see the impact players go, but the new players are ready for the opportunity and excited to be the next one up. I have no doubt that we have those girls who are ready to step into those shoes.”
The Griz will face those four teams consecutively in October, with three of the four matchups coming on the road.

MONTANA SOCCER BRINGING IN REINFORCEMENT
In addition to second-year assistant coach Micaela Castain, Katie Benz joins the Griz coaching staff for 2017. Benz’s collegiate career at Cal included four trips to the NCAA tournament. Following graduation, she played professionally before getting into coaching in 2016, as volunteer director of operations at the University of Denver. Castain was a standout player at Washington State, leading the Cougars to three NCAA tournament appearances and being named the 2013 Pac-12 Player of the Year and a second-team NSCAA All-American. “Micaela and Katie are, first of all, two great people,” said Plakorus, noting their character, work ethic and drive to be successful. “You look at these two young ladies and nothing came easy for them. They had to work extremely hard and went on to be successful. They’re great coaches but great role models as well.”
AN OPPORTUNITY AND RESPONSIBILITY
As the only Division-I women’s soccer team in the state of Montana, Plakorus takes his job seriously. It’s a big flag to carry, but something he enjoys doing. “It’s an unbelievable opportunity,” Plakorus said. “As I began my coaching career, I always had my eye on Montana. I thought it was special what this school and these athletics teams mean to this state and this community. To be a Grizzly and run this program and be responsible for it is very special.”
SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM
A total of 19 student-athletes from the 2016 soccer team earned Academic All-Big Sky Conference recognition in February for obtaining a 3.2 gradepoint average or better. The figure was tied for the most in the league.
HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE
Of the 19, 13 will suit up for the Griz this fall, in addition to incoming freshman Alexa Coyle, who was one of just 49 high school seniors nationally named to the NSCAA High School Scholar All-America Team by the National Soccer Coaches Assosciation of America.
“Missoula is a great soccer town,” Plakorus said. “It has always supported us very well, and we always enjoy playing here in front of our fans.”
Montana will play its home opener next weekend, hosting the Montana Cup. The Griz will play Air Force on Friday, Aug. 25, at 5:30 p.m., followed by a match vs. San José State on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. The Falcons and Spartans will also play Eastern Washington that weekend at South Campus Stadium.
The Griz have won more than 70-percent of their home games over the past five seasons, going 25-10-7. In addition to four home conference games, UM will host Air Force, San José State, Washington State and Southern Utah in 2017.

ead coach Mark Plakorus and the University of Montana soccer team reports for fall camp on Tuesday, Aug. 1. The Griz will hold two-a-day practices over the next two weeks, leading up to their season opener, Aug. 18 at Boise State. Montana head soccer coach Mark Plakorus remembers the moment well. It was Sept. 8, 2014, a day following a 2-0 loss at Texas. Plakorus was watching a replay of the Longhorn Network’s telecast and heard commentators Glenn Davis and Monica Gonzalez marvel about how many underclassmen the Griz had. Twenty-two, in fact. Fifteen freshmen and seven sophomores. Out of the 30 players on roster. Eleven of those players are still Grizzlies, with nine suiting up for their senior season this fall. The group features five returning starters, including All-Big Sky Conference selections Chanelle Pederson and Hallie Widner. Three years after having one of the youngest teams in the country, Plakorus and his UM soccer team now get to enjoy the fruits of developing those players. “We have a lot of returning talent,” the seventh-year head coach said. “The more experienced you are, the better you are at preparing yourself for what’s ahead of you.”
Of course, UM has already enjoyed plenty of success. In 2014, that same season the young Griz team faced off at Texas, it went undefeated through conference play to secure a second consecutive Big Sky title. But there have also been the last two seasons, where Plakorus will be the first to admit that his team has underperformed. He believes the past two rosters have had the talent to bring a third and fourth consecutive title to Missoula, but he couldn’t get his team to maximize its potential. “We’ve had some success, but I also think we’ve fallen short,” Plakorus said. “We’ve been good the last couple of years, we’ve been a tough team to play, but I don’t think we’ve reached our potential, and for me, that’s the most frustrating part of being a coach.” But back to the 2017 squad – the one that returns 12 letterwinners and eight starters, but also welcomes 14 newcomers. “I like this team,” Plakorus said. “I like this team a lot. I think we have a good mix between experience and talent, and some of our younger players coming up are high-level players, as well. It’s a really good, competitive mix all around.” First, there are the veterans. Six players return who made at least 15 starts in 2016. Many of the upper-

classmen have been playing since they were freshmen, and have been through both the good and the hard. They know what the college game is like and can pass that on to the underclassmen. “Experience gives you confidence and confidence allows you to play more calm,” Plakorus said. Then, there are the newcomers. Thirteen freshmen and a Pac-12 transfer. Despite their youth, Plakorus expects them to contend for spots right away, and for many of them to play. “We’ll have the best chance to win if our newcomers compete and challenge our upperclassmen. “When I recruit somebody, I don’t recruit them with the thought process of ‘down the road.’ I tell every one of them, ‘You’re going to have the opportunity to compete from Day 1.’ What they do with that opportunity is up to them, but I expect them to be prepared.”

They’ll need to be, because the schedule – which Plakorus says may be the toughest he’s every put together – doesn’t give UM any favors. The Griz begin the season on the road, at Boise State (Aug. 18) and Utah State (Aug. 20) of the Mountain West. They’ll return home to host the Montana Cup – vs. Air Force and San José State on Aug. 25 and 27 – before embarking on the road for three of the next four weekends of non-conference play. During that stretch, UM will face Power-5 opponents Nebraska in Pullman, Wash. (Sept. 3), Iowa in Iowa City (Sept. 8), Oregon in Eugene (Sept. 15) and Washington State in Missoula (Sept. 17). But the games against the “bigger schools” are exciting for the Griz. In 2015, they beat Iowa. In 2016, they took down Purdue on the road. They’ve also played Washington State and Missouri to overtime. “Every game is a lesson, and we’ve learned a lot about what it takes to get to the next level,” Plakorus said.”

MONTANA SOCCER The variety of teams UM will face will force it to see different styles of play and adapt on the fly. Plakorus also noted that it will challenge his players and make them uncomfortable – in a good way. All of this, ideally, will prepare the Griz for what they’ll see in the Big Sky Conference, and hopefully in the NCAA tournament down the road. The opponents will be difficult, but Plakorus believes his team will be a challenge for other teams, as well. The mixture of experience and young talent provides plenty of depth. Then there’s the fact that UM has flexibility and can play a lot of different ways, depending on the opponent and depending on what’s working.
He sees a talented group – one that has the chance to take Montana to the next level. But Plakorus knows – the last two years as evidence – that talent alone doesn’t always translate. “Now the big question is, ‘Can we have consistency in our work ethic? Can we have consistency in our decision making? Can we handle adversity? Can we be great together? Can we encourage and drive each other to let that greatness out?’ “If we do, I think this can be one of the most talented and athletic teams that we’ve had,” he said.

MARK PLAKORUS Head Coach | Seventh Season | Kansas, 1990 The 2017 season is Mark Plakorus’s seventh year as head coach at the University of Montana and his 19th year as a coach at the NCAA Division I level. He was hired in January 2011 after previously serving as the associate head coach at TCU. Plakorus, the 2014 Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, is just the third coach in the history of the Montana soccer program, following Betsy Duerksen (19942003) and Neil Sedgwick (2004-10). In his first six seasons, Plakorus led the Grizzlies to three Big Sky Conference championships and five Big Sky tournaments. In 2014 his team brought the league tournament back to Missoula for the first time since 2000 after winning the regular-season title. Montana won the Big Sky tournament title in 2011 in Plakorus’s first season, which sent the Grizzlies to their first NCAA tournament since 2000. They fell in a competitive match to eventual national champion Stanford. The Grizzlies claimed a share of the regular-season title in 2012 and lost in the tournament championship match in a shootout. They won the outright regular-season title in 2014 by going unbeaten (8-0-2) in 10 league matches. Plakorus enters the 2017 season with a record at Montana of 55-49-20 and Big Sky mark of 30-16-9. In Plakorus’s first year, in 2011, Montana doubled its wins total from 2010 from three to six and more than tripled its goal output from eight to 27. In 2012, the Grizzlies upped their win total to 12, the most victories in a season in more than a decade. Montana finished one game below .500 in 2013 and missed the conference

MONTANA SOCCER tournament, but the Grizzlies were the Big Sky’s hottest team late in the season, winning three of their last four and four of their last six matches. Montana went 12-6-2 in 2014 and unbeaten through its league schedule for the first time since 1999. Along the way, the Grizzlies outscored their Big Sky opponents 19-4 and swept the Sacramento State-Portland State road trip for the first time since 1998. The Grizzlies went 9-11-2 in 2015, 5-4-1 in Big Sky matches. No. 5 Montana defeated No. 4 Weber State 2-0 in the Big Sky tournament quarterfinals for the program’s second postseason win under Plakorus. In 2016, Montana used an early-season win at Purdue to earn its first NSCAA Pacific Region ranking under Plakorus. The Grizzlies, who at 3-0-1 got off to their best start in program history, would be ranked the first four weeks of the season, reaching as high as ninth. Montana has finished .500 or better in league five times in six seasons under Plakorus and is 2-3-3 in its five Big Sky tournament appearances, two times advancing to the championship match, two more times making the semifinals. In five seasons under Plakorus, Montana has had 23 first- or second-team All-Big Sky Conference selections. The team’s four first-team selections in 2014 were the most for the program since 2004. In 2012 Lauren Costa was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive MVP, Erin Craig the co-Offensive MVP. In 2014 Brooke Moody was voted the co-Defensive MVP, Hallie Widner the Newcomer of the Year. Kailey Norman earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2016. Plakorus has coached six players to NSCAA All-Pacific Region honors.
Montana has also excelled academically under Plakorus. The Grizzlies have earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award each year under Plakorus and have had 102 Academic All-Big Sky Conference selections the last six years. Plakorus spent three seasons (1999-2001) at Air Force, two at Iowa (2002-03) and one at Tulsa (2004) before joining the TCU staff. He finished his sixth season with the Horned Frogs in 2010 before joining the Grizzlies. TCU had had four straight losing seasons prior to the arrival of head coach Dan Abdalla and Plakorus in 2005. By 2008 the Horned Frogs were 14-4-2, had become a nationally ranked program and had set a program record with 47 goals in 20 matches, making TCU the 18th most prolific offense in the nation. Plakorus, who spent 11 years in the Air Force, has ties to Montana that date back nearly two decades. He was stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls from 1994 to 1999 and has been one of the directors of the Flathead Soccer Camp in Kalispell since 1998. In addition to his Air Force duties at Malmstrom, Plakorus became the director of coaching and player development for the Electric City Soccer Club, started the boys’ soccer program at Great Falls High School and rose to the role of director of the Montana girls’ Olympic Development Program. In those roles, Plakorus saw a number of his former players go on to play for the Grizzlies, who at the time were being coached by Duerksen. Plakorus graduated from Kansas in 1990 with a degree in computer science. He played club soccer at KU and was a member of the ROTC. He added a master’s degree in sport administration from Western Kentucky in 2012.

MICAELA CASTAIN Assistant Coach | Second Season | Washington State, 2014 The 2017 season is Micaela Castain’s second year as an assistant coach with the Montana soccer program. She was hired in February 2016. In her first year at Montana, the Grizzlies went 9-6-5 and tied for third in the Big Sky Conference with a 5-2-3 league record. Castain, who played at Washington State from 2010-13, was working in the business world before joining coach Mark Plakorus’s staff. Originally from Castro Valley, Calif., Castain was recruited to play collegiately at Washington State. Over Castain’s final three years at WSU, the Cougars won 38 matches and made three NCAA tournaments. As a senior she scored 11 goals and added a program-record 11 assists, and earned both Pac-12 Player of the Year and second-team NSCAA All-America honors. Castain finished her career with 80 points, on 33 goals and 14 assists, a total that ranks third in Washington State history. Castain, who earned a degree in social sciences, with an emphasis in psychology and human development, from Washington State in 2014, was voted into the Castro Valley Sports Foundation Hall of Fame in the spring of 2016.
KATIE BENZ Assistant Coach | First Season | California, 2012 The 2017 season is Katie Benz’s first year as an assistant coach with the Montana soccer program. She was hired in June 2017. Benz spent the 2016 season working as director of operations at Denver, her first year working at the collegiate level, and coaching in the Colorado Rush club program. Benz, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but raised in Sonoma, Calif., played collegiately at California. She scored three goals in her first three seasons playing for the Golden Bears behind Alex Morgan. Each of those teams advanced to the NCAA tournament. As a senior in 2011, Benz, a one-time Pac-12 Player of the Week, scored 10 goals in Cal’s first eight matches, including a hat trick against Denver, before suffering a career-ending broken leg midway through a season that also concluded with a trip to the NCAAs. Benz graduated in 2012 with a degree in legal studies. She spent one year after college writing, recording and touring with the band The Youngest.
