Media monitoring volunteer Are you interested in local news? Do you love the countryside? As our media monitoring volunteer, you’ll be a news junkie who loves to keep an eye on the latest stories about the environment, transport, planning, development... and anything that might have an impact on the countryside. Duties Our media monitoring volunteer will look through the local and regional media keeping an eye on the stories that are making the news. From flood protection schemes in Banbury to planning homes in West Oxfordshire, from solar panels in Henley and wind turbines near Thame, you’ll scan the online media and compile a list of links to the latest local news stories. This list is circulated by email to CPRE staff and volunteers to help them keep abreast with the latest debates on subjects that affect our work. We use the list of links to select stories for our social media feeds. Your media monitoring activity may take less than an hour a day, or perhaps an hour or two every other day. This is a very flexible role which you can do from home. Skills and experience You will need to be computer literate with access to a computer and the internet. You’ll be a news junkie and be able to spot a story that might be of interest to us on a range of subjects: farming, floods, wind turbines, community affairs, planning, development, and so on. You’ll need to have an interest in a wide range of topics that might affect the environment. No specific qualifications or experience are required, but the following would be especially helpful in performing the role effectively: • • • • •

knowledge of the local area an interest in and commitment to environmental matters the ability to get to the heart of a news story to assess its appropriateness knowledge of the environment/voluntary/local authority sector social media experience

We will provide training and support. Why volunteer? If you are looking for relevant skills for your CV, this is a great way of getting hands-on experience, plus the potential for training to fill in any knowledge gaps. Or you may be looking to give something back with the skills you already have. Whatever your motivation, you will be making a positive and worthwhile contribution to the protection of our beautiful local countryside. Estimated time This is very flexible depending on the time you can offer. The ideal would be couple of hours a week for a few months. Let us know what you can do. Background information Most of your work can be done at home but you may, from time to time, like to join us at our Branch Office in Wheatley.
