DID YOU KNOW? Namibia is home to the indigenous Himba people, a semi-nomadic tribe that herd cattle across the savannah in Damaraland, living in thatched roof huts made from branches covered in clay mixed with cow dung. Traditionally the women don't bathe each day and instead take a sweat bath then cover themselves in mud which is the consistency of talcum powder used to act as a sunscreen and moisturiser. A visit to one of the villages should not be missed when visiting Namibia!

Makgadikgadi Pans - Botswana

It is primarily the wildlife that attracts visitors to these four destinations that form part of Southern Africa, but it is also the diversity of the scenery, cultural heritage and activities: from drifting down lily strewn waters in a mokoro in Botswana to seeing the magnificent Victoria Falls; the game rich national parks and wide choice of adventure activities such as canoeing or walking in Zambia along the Zambezi River - it is all here waiting to be discovered!.

VENTURES NOT TO MISS! BOTSWANA n Drifting along the Okavanga River in a mokoro (dugout canoe) - the large wetland area surrounded by the Kalahari Desert.

n Moremi Game Reserve described as one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa.

n Nata Bird Sanctuary with over165 bird species.

NXAI PAN DECEMBER - MAY Nxai Pan adjoins the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park on its northern border. The pan itself is a fossil lake bed about 40sq. km in size. Covered in nutritious short grasses and small islands of acacia trees, Nxai Pan attracts vast numbers of desert herbivores such as gemsbok, springbuck and extraordinarily large herds of giraffe, up to 30 in a group. In the south of the park are Baines' Baobabs, a cluster of millenniaold baobab trees named after the famous artist Thomas Baines who discovered them in 1862. It is rare to see baobab trees so close together and as one was growing on its side, Baines named his painting "The Sleeping Five". The Green brothers, famous explorers, passed this way too and to this day their inscription into the bark "Green's Expedition 1858-1859" can be clearly seen.

NTWETWE PAN

NAMIBIA n Watching the sunset at Sossusvlei, when the dunes seem to glow. n Fish River Canyon with its gigantic ravines breaking up into a series of cliffs.

n The World Heritage Site of Twefelfontein, known for its ancient bushmen paintings and the Petrified Forest.

JUNE - NOVEMBER

The Ntwetwe Pan is one of the two major pans that make up the Makgadikgadi Pans and is amongst the largest salt pans in the world. The pan was fed by the Boteti River until it was left permanently dry following the construction of the Mopipi Dam, which provides water for the diamond mines in Orapa. The waters may have returned to the river but Ntwetwe is now famous for its extraordinary lunar landscape, particularly the rocky outcrops, dunes, islets and channels found along the western shore.

You will be met at Lusaka Airport and transferred to domestic flight (own account) to Mfuwe which takes approx. 1 hour. Your safari guide will meet you on arrival and drive you to your first camp to settle and recover from your journey. Return to camp at around 19h30 for dinner.(L,D)

* All prices based on per person, per night twin share rate/low season. Refer Booking Conditions, p.48.

DAY 2: LUWI BUSH CAMP

Your safari at Luwi is likely to be accompanied by the noises of the wildlife around camp. When day breaks and after breakfast around a camp fire, head out on foot to pick up the fresh tracks of wildlife. This is no nature trail - it is the real thing - tracking big game through the

African bush, on foot like the first Luangwa pioneers. (B,L,D)

DAY 3-4: LUWI - NSOLO BUSH CAMP

Your guide will walk you down the meandering Luwi River course with the destination - Nsolo, the second of the bush camps. After a few hours gentle walking and exploration, arrive into camp to find a warm welcome, a cool drink, brunch on the table. The next two days are spent on foot or in an open safari vehicle exploring the wilds of the Nsolo area. (Bx2,Lx2,Dx2)

DAY 5-6: NSOLO - KAKULI BUSH CAMP

The next move is further down the Luwi River, again on foot or by 4x4 game viewer if you prefer, to its confluence with the main Luangwa River and to Kakuli Camp. This area is famous for its high population of leopards and in August - October there is a stunning carmine bee eater colony not far from camp. The tents all look out across the Luangwa River and the main lounge overlooks a lagoon/waterhole which provides a great source of entertainment as you watch the animals come to drink. (Bx2,Lx2,Dx2)

DAY 7-8: KAKULI - MCHENJA CAMP

Walking Safari

A taste of sophistication with the last camp on the trail set under the shade of immense ebony trees. The five individually designed tents each have a bath inside as well as an open, en-suite shower and toilet. The main lounge and bar is situated under the bough of an old ebony tree and sitting area and meals are usually taken on the river bank. At the end of the camp is a small pool which is excellent for cooling off after your morning safari. Both game walks and drives and the wildlife viewing in this area is some of the best in the Park. EAST AFRICA

The road leading from Ngorongoro to Serengeti

East Africa is generally considered to be the cradle of mankind and where some of the best safaris can be experienced - the unique spectacle of the annual Great Migration in Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara; the Ngorongoro Crater formed by the collapse of an extinct volcano; the beauty and magnificence of Mounts Kenya and Kilimanjaro; or a two-day safari tracking mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda - unforgettable memories to last a lifetime!

TANZANIA LESSER KNOWN EXOTIC ANIMALS Famous for being one of the best places to spot lions, cheetahs and leopards, here are a few of the lesser known animals to keep an eye out for:: n the Banded Mongoose n the Dik-Dik - like a miniature deer n the Lesser Kudu with its 11-14 white stripes n the Blue Wildebeest n the Oryx with its imposing long horn.

KENYA SAMBURU'S "SPECIAL FIVE" Samburu's National Reserve actually boasts not only the Big Five but also its own often referred to "special five":

Seeing the wildebeest (gnu) migration in East Africa is one of the most spectacular wildlife sightings in the world. Almost 2 million animals roam the plains of East Africa and their movements are governed by the rains and so predicting their location can be a gamble. A brief outline of the migration movements: n DECEMBER TO APRIL The migration spreads out over the Southern Plains of the Serengeti. Depending on the rains they move from the Gol Kopjes in the east to the Moru Kopjes in the west. This area is easily accessible from the centrally located Seronera. n MAY AND AUGUST The migration slowly moves through the western corridor and into the Ikoma and Grumeti Wildlife Management Areas. These areas are outside of the Serengeti, but as there are no fences the wildlife can and do, move around freely. n SEPTEMBER TO END OF

NOVEMBER

During the short rains, the migration crosses into the Masai Mara in Kenya. This is a relatively small park compared to the vast Serengeti and the wildlife tends to be very concentrated.

n the Grevvy's Zebra n the Long-necked Gerenuk n the Reticulated Giraffe n the Beisa Oryx n the Somali Ostrich.

UGANDA & RWANDA GORILLA ETIQUETTE n Never visit the gorillas if you are sick. n Never look a gorilla in the eye. n Never mimic a gorilla. n When filming gorillas, never use a flash. n Keep a distance betweeen 5-7 metres. n Keep your voice low when speaking. n Don't ever run from a gorilla. n Always listen to your guide, follow instructions and stay as a group. t: 1300 303 343

Mt Kilimanjaro

n WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO? Whilst Mt Kilimanjaro is accessible all year round, it is important to be aware of the challenges and conditions you are likely to encounter at different times of year and plan your trek accordingly. The peak trekking months usually offer favourable weather, however it is also important to bear in mind that these months are also the busiest. The climate on the mountain can be unpredictable and it is therefore essential that you mentally prepare for the worst of the weather conditions.

Ramadan 27 May - 25 June 2017

Often referred to as the "holy month", Ramadan is an Islamic religious period whose duration is a maximum of 30 days. Dates change annually. During this time shopping & business hours are often reduced. Though hotels of an international standard are usually not overly affected, there may be restrictions such as non-serving/ limited service of alchohol and/or restrictions on food service during the daylight hours as well as some restrictions to entertainment, etc. It is viewed as a sign of respect if visitors also refrain from eating, drinking & smoking in public during the daylight hours of Ramadan. A more conservative dress code should be adhered to during the month of Ramadan, especially when travelling outside of the hotels and resorts. Swimwear and items such as strapless tops & sleeveless dresses should not be worn in public places. Likewise full-length trousers & short sleeve shirts should be worn rather than shorts & vest-style tops (especially when visiting holy sites.)

The electric current is 240 volts in all countries. Electricity may be more limited in remote or rural areas. We recommend taking a universal adaptor.
