Explanation of Advent The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival”. The season of Advent, a season of waiting, is designed to cultivate our awareness of God’s actions—past, present, and future. In Advent we hear the prophecies of the Messiah’s coming as addressed to us—people who wait for the second coming. In Advent we heighten our anticipation for the ultimate fulfillment of all Old Testament promises, when the wolf will lie down with the lamb, death will be swallowed up, and every tear will be wiped away. In this way Advent highlights for us the larger story of God’s redemptive plan. A deliberate tension is built into the practice of the Advent season. Christ has come and yet not all things have reached completion. While we remember Israel’s waiting and hoping and we give thanks for Christ’s birth, we also anticipate his second coming at the end of time. --The Worship Sourcebook

Explanation of Art Installations

The art installations for Advent were inspired by Hebrews 11. As we read through the scripture, prayed, thought, and talked together, several themes emerged: leaving home for a risk filled journey to an unknown destination, not seeing clearly how to get there beyond the next step, and walking into the unknown. We thought about how hard the walk of faith is, how uncertain when the signs or directions seem ambiguous or veiled, and how God’s leading is usually clearer in hindsight. How easy it is to second guess ourselves and the journey when the goal and promise is long in coming…or never fulfilled in this life at all. The processed signs and suitcases riff on idea of a road trip, street signs, and God’s signs. Three new signs will be added each week of Advent. Each set of signs relates to the specific story that the sermon is based upon. Readings will be situated in different parts of the sanctuary, “on the way” to the longed for home and kingdom that is and is not yet. The paintings were collaborations: Students from 2nd through Middle School did pencil drawings based on the stories in Hebrews 11. Artists scaled the drawings to fit large paper, and the congregation painted them during our Advent Workshop. Read Hebrews 11 and compare it with clues in the paintings to help identify the faith heroes who are depicted. The patriarchs and judges are well represented, as are Sarah, Rahab and Deborah. ~~Barb Knuckles, on behalf of the Creative Class and liturgical artists at Redeemer.

Hebrews 11 accounts the faithful walks of a diverse group of people. These faithful acted their God-given work in a territory set apart for them. The overlapping and distinct areas of color represent the lives lived “by faith,” each layer of color adding to the bigger picture and greater glory of our Triune God. ~~Katie Pourcho

Processional “Pilgrim Hymn” All

Shout, ye little flock, and blest, You on Jesus’ throne shall rest: There your seat is now prepared— There your kingdom and reward. Lift your eyes, ye sons of light, Zion’s city is in sight: There our endless home shall be, there our Lord we soon shall see. O Lord, obediently we go, Gladly leaving all the world below; Thou alone our only Leader be; And still we follow Thee. words John Cennick, 1742; music Nathan Partain, 2009

Advent Reading Reader

The 3rd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Joy with the “Shepherd’s Candle” reminding us of the joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus and the joy that we share by the Holy Spirit as we wait with eager expectation for Christ to come again. 1 Peter 1:3-9

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 3

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him born the King of angels. O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord. O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord. Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger, We would embrace thee, with love and awe; Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning: Jesus, to thee be glory giv’n; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing. God is re-creating us in Christ, calling us into the life of faith, where he is at work but not yet finished. Therefore, we do not lose heart. Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. In our weariness, we despair. We don’t think we can carry on. We’re not sure we want to carry on. We are called to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. Since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. We go through our day, and it doesn’t dawn on us to think about what is eternal. God’s word and promises seem unreal. It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak. We are afraid to speak or act. We turn our eyes away from those in need. We withhold forgiveness when sinned against. We keep silent before others about Jesus.

Assurance of Pardon in the Gospel based on 2 Corinthians 4 Leader

God said, “Let light shine out of darkness.” He has made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of his glory displayed in the face of Christ.

People

We know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us to himself.

Leader

We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,

People

So that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

All 4

May the grace that is reaching more and more people cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

Song of Thanksgiving “Sing We Now of Christmas”

(Noel means to sing the news of Jesus’ birth)

All

Sing we now of Christmas, Noel sing, we here! Listen to our praises to the Babe so dear. Sing we, Noel, the King is born, Noel! Sing we now of Christmas, sing, we all, Noel! Shepherds on the hillside heard the angels sing: Glory, honor, praises to the infant King. Sing we, Noel, the King is born, Noel! Sing we now of Christmas, sing, we all, Noel! In the town, they found him; Son of Mary mild. Sleeping in a manger was the Holy Child. Sing we, Noel, the King is born, Noel! Sing we now of Christmas, sing, we all, Noel! Wise men sought and found him, treasures did they bring; Bowing down, they worshiped Christ, the King of kings. Sing we, Noel, the King is born, Noel! Sing we now of Christmas, sing, we all, Noel! Sing we, Noel, the King is born, Noel! Sing we now of Christmas, sing, we all, Noel! trad. French Carol

Song of Thanksgiving “What Child is This?” All

What child is this who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste, to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary. Why lies he in such mean estate, where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear, for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce him through, the cross be borne for me, for you. Hail, hail the Word made flesh, the babe, the son of Mary. So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh, come peasant, king to own him; The King of kings salvation brings, let loving hearts enthrone him. Raise, raise a song on high; The virgin sings her lullaby. Joy, joy for Christ is born, the babe, the son of Mary. trad. English carol, 16th cent.; adapt. William C. Dix, 1865; Public Domain

Offering of Gifts and Service Children’s Worship is for ages 4 through kindergarten and is a time for children to worship through song, Bible stories and response (art or story play). Children will return to the sanctuary before communion, and parents can pick them up at that time. Visitors are welcome, and parents are always invited to attend with their children.

Scripture Hebrews 11:31 Reader

By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies. 31

Joshua 2

And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. 2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3 Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” 6 But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. 7 So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. 1

6

Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” 8

Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. 16 And she said to them, “Go into the hills, or the pur-suers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.” 17 The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear. 18 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household. 19 Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.” 21 And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 15

They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing. 23 Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. 24 And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.” 22

Risky Faith, Scandalous God

7

Notes:

Community Group Questions 1) Think about a typical fear you have. How are you tempted to answer that fear by something that you can do, something in this world? How can Rahab’s confession in Joshua 2:8–13 re-frame how you respond to your fear? 2) Are you scandalized that God saves you? Why or why not? 3) Rahab believes, and therefore she acts. Her faith is expressed in actions that risk her life. Where in your life could God be inviting you to step out in faith that he is the God of heaven and earth and rescues people through Jesus? 4) God sends the spies to Jericho even though he plans to bring the city down in a direct, supernatural way (see Joshua 6). His purpose is to save Rahab and, along the way, to reassure the Israelites that he will bring them into the land. Given that God’s heart is to save, whom can you pray for and look for natural ways to talk about Jesus? Children’s Questions The story of Rahab is exciting and suspenseful. Will the spies get caught? What will happen to Rahab? She lives by faith, because she believes in God’s power and kindness. How has God been powerful in your life? How has he shown you kindness? How can you, therefore, trust him and be risky in your faith?

Call to Communion and Prayer Guidelines for the Reception of Communion Redeemer welcomes all Christians who are willing to forsake their sin and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation and who are members of congregations which proclaim the gospel to receive Communion with us. We will be coming forward for the distribution of Communion. Please eat the bread privately, and then drink the cup together with us after everyone has returned to their seats. Clear cups (located in the interior rings) contain grape juice. Red cups (exterior ring of tray) contain wine. Children who have been examined by the elders and admitted to the Lord’s Table are able to partake of Communion. The ministry of prayer is one of the ways we live together as a community of believers and seekers. During Communion, members of our prayer team are available at the front of the sanctuary. It would be our privilege to pray with you as we walk together through the joys and struggles of life. We also encourage you to pray with one another in the pews during this time of movement in our service.

Prayers Prayer for Guidance to Truth God, I don’t know how I feel about what I have heard today but I want to trust that you are good, that you are loving and that you are just. I want to know if you are the true God. If you are there would you guide my soul to the truest truth. I don’t want to be tricked or believe a lie. I don’t want to believe in something just to make me feel better. Please God, lead me to the truth. Prayer of Belief and Repentance Jesus, I believe that you are who you say you are: the Son of God and the savior of broken people like me. I need forgiveness. I need to be made new and to start over again. I now turn away from all I have been doing. I turn away from my self-centered life. I turn my whole heart toward you. I believe that when you were crucified, you took all of my evil and somehow you gave me all of your beauty. I invite your Holy Spirit to live in me. I do not want to live for myself any more. I want you to lead my life. I want to know you and to receive your love for me. Please teach me and protect me and guide me. I am yours. I ask these things in the name of Jesus. Amen. Prayer of Doubt and Faith God, I don’t really believe all of this but there is a part of my heart that knows there is truth and goodness here. I am confused by the fact that there are so many things that I don’t understand or that make me angry about you. There are also so many things that fill my heart with hope and many things that draw me to you and I want to put my trust in you. God, you say I can come to you and ask for anything so if you are real, please give me the faith I need to believe. Give me the desire to continue to seek after you. Keep my heart from self-deception. Protect me from any evil misleading or binding spirits. Calm my fears. Soften my cynicism. Be patient with me and if you are God, please don’t let me go but instead let me know that you are real. I have a little faith, help me in my doubt.

Song of Celebration “He’s On His Way Down” Ensemble

For you who walk in darkness still relying on the Lord. Refusing to make your own light, or kindle your own torch. He’s on his way down! Soon there will be a little child there at the virgin’s breast. To save you he will wear your sin and then he’ll die your death. He’s on his way down! For you who prey upon the weak, who trample on the poor. Your cup of wrath is filling up. Your Judge is at the door. He’s on his way down! The King of kings, the Lord of lords, the Prince of Peace, the Living Word, Ancient of Days, Author of Life, Emmanuel, Eternal Light, The Mighty God, The Counselor, The Promised One, The Warrior, The Son of God, The Son of Man, O Jesus Christ, Our Savior. O magnify the Lord with me, if he has giv’n you voice. “The Lord who Saves” will raise you up, let Earth and Heav’n rejoice! He’s on his way down! Nathan Partain, 2011

Song of Celebration “At Night, the Desert” Ensemble

At night, the desert is full of snakes, Bloodthirsty thieves who lie in wait, For weak and weary on pilgrimage, For lost and wayward or tangled in sin. The ground is barren, the streams are dry. The buzzards circle the starless sky. The towns are burned out and filled with ghosts, In desolation, we ache, we’re longing for home. The fear is heavy, despair weighs down, The world of danger, demons surround, And death pollutes each thought we think, Our minds held captive, our tongues are mean. We fight and cut down, just to survive, We gorge, yet we are less satisfied. We have been tortured to need our chains, A prayer still smoldering, dim, “O God will you save?” There is a humming across the plain, A sweet anointing, first drops of rain. A song of waiting, the sound of faith, Defies the darkness with hope again. There is a promise within the song, A warrior coming, to judge the wrongs. The festive laughter, the smell of home, The good news trembles the air, “The true King is born!” O break the morning, O come down God, Our only beauty, our only Love, Come change our mourning to joyful dance, Your reign establish, O bring peace at last. Until your glory, fills heaven and earth, The new creation, the second birth! O brother Jesus, O Father Love, O dearest Spirit, one God, Remain with us all! Nathan Partain, 2013

Departing Hymn “Canticle of the Turning”

My soul cries out with a joyful shout That the God of my heart is great, And my spirit sings of the wondrous things That you bring to the ones who wait. You fixed your sight on your servant’s plight, And my weakness you did not spurn, So from east to west shall my name be blest. Could the world be about to turn? My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn! Though the nations rage from age to age, We remember who holds us fast: God’s mercy must deliver us From the conqueror’s crushing grasp. This saving Word that our forbear’rs heard Is the promise which holds us bound, ’Til the spear and rod can be crushed by God, Who is turning the world around. My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn! Though I am small, my God, my all, You work great things in me, And your mercy will last from the depths of the past To the end of the age to be. Your very name puts the proud to shame, And to those who would for you yearn, You will show your might, put the strong to flight, For the world is about to turn. My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn! words and arr. Mortgage + Church Planting FAQ What is this “church-planting” thing? God changes lives through the gospel. It’s how he restores his relationship with us and all our other relationships. And that takes shape in community where we live out the gospel and God works in us. Church planting is simply starting new communities like ours where people can trust Jesus and see God change their lives. What’s the connection between changed lives and church-planting? New churches are usually more effective in reaching new people with the gospel than established churches. So starting new churches is a great way for the gospel to go forward. Why connect church-planting with the mortgage? That seems too complicated. Our mortgage has a balloon payment of $625,000 due in March 2018. That necessity actually represents an opportunity. If we pay off the mortgage, the $100,000 we spend on our building each year instead can go toward building new communities like ours to trust Jesus. Why put church-planting in the budget before we plant an actual church? Putting church-planting in the budget means we normalize spending money on new people encountering Jesus. We budget what we care about, so let’s budget for the gospel to go forward in our city. Why are we talking about it now? First, our preaching series took us there. Philippians 4:10–20 called us to give for the gospel. Church-planting is a way to apply how we can give for the gospel. Second, it’s year-end, and as people consider their giving, we want them to think about a gift for the mortgage/church-planting fund. So why haven’t we been talking about it since March? The biggest thing is that we needed to focus on the arrival of Charles Anderson as our new lead pastor. And then we wanted to wait until after October so that we didn’t overshadow Mercy Month. What do the numbers look like? We have $245,409.46 received or pledged for the fund. That’s 37% of what we need. That leaves us to raise $379,590.54. What should I do? Pray: Our mission to plant gospel-centered communities is too big and too fraught for us to move in our own strength or wisdom. We need to pray to the Lord to move through us in this city. Give: We are trying to raise close to $400,000 by March. This will require all of us to give, great and small. I still have questions. How can I ask them? Ask any of the elders in person or by email whenever you want. Come to our town hall on Jan. 7 at 10:00am to ask questions and hear more.

Membership at Redeemer Membership in a PCA church is meaningful in multiple ways. First, we believe that as Christians, it is a part of our calling to be active and engaged in the Church. When you become a member, you take public vows to confirm your faith in Christ and commit to his Church. These vows submit members to the leadership and discipline of the church. We submit ourselves to accountability just like in marriage, friendship, citizenship, and any other relationship or institution that we enter into. In the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA), membership allows you certain benefits. Members in good standing are able to vote on church matters. They elect elders and call pastors and have a say in other church business. To become a member at Redeemer you must take our Discover Redeemer class and meet with an elder for an interview. You will take membership vows privately and then publically before the church. To begin this process, contact Jamie MacGregor [[email protected]].

Good to See You Again. You’ve been around, but there are so many ways to get plugged in that you’re not sure where to start. How about starting here? Give us your name and email, check some boxes, and drop this in the offering plate. FIRST & LAST NAME
