Sanctuary Art Bulletin Cover

“My recent work seeks to break the ‘violence of naming’—the consequences of categorizing people according to single or simplistic identities—by breaking the ‘naming of violence’—transforming depictions of violence by undermining the ability to fit them easily into pre-existing visual categories. Through the creation of dislocating juxtapositions, visual layering, and the deployment of surrealism my work changes the substance and meaning of oppositional relationships and violent objects, in the process exploring the multi-valency of human identity and the connections between people. At a secondary level, within the context of war, and specifically Western interventions in the Middle-East and Central Asia, my work is also a critique of imperialism and power.” ~~Stefan Eicher

Welcome Call to Worship based on Psalm 18:1–3 Leader

I love you, O Lord, my strength.

People

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the victory of my salvation, my safe place.

All

I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.

Opening Hymn “My Hope is Built” All

My hope is built on nothing less, than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest upon unchanging grace; In every rough and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. His oath, his covenant, his blood, support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, he then is all my Hope and Stay. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. When I shall launch in worlds unseen, O may I then be found in him; Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand. All other ground is sinking sand. words: Edward Mote 1834, music: William Bradbury 1863

Prayer of Confession based on Mark 4:1–20

2

Leader

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed.

People

Hear the confession of our heart, O loving father.

Leader

You do not have our hearts.

People

We have good answers, we have good actions, but we have not surrendered our hearts.

Leader

We are filled with shame and fear.

People

We feel shame for how we act, we feel shame for not being good enough, we are afraid we will never bear fruit.

Leader

We are afraid to wrestle with the gospel.

People

Our pride, shame, and fear paralyze us. We know what we ought to do, but we feel powerless to move.

Leader

Lord, in your mercy, hear our confession.

People

Do not forget us in our distress.

Assurance of Pardon in the Gospel based on Ephesians 2:5, 2 Timothy 1:9 Leader

The gospel of Jesus Christ brings healing, freedom, and life.

People

There is no shame because we have been saved by grace.

Leader

Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive in Christ.

People

Even though we were dead in our transgressions, we have been saved by grace.

Leader

There is forgiveness for all who confess their sins in Jesus’s name.

People

He has saved us and called us to a holy life, not because of our actions, but because of God’s purpose and grace.

Song in the Gospel “All You Do is Good” All

You are full of compassion and abounding in love, You create things from nothing, call what’s not though it was. You are light with no shadow, with no shifting or change. You turn weeping to dancing and despair into thanks. You are good and all you do is good. You are good and all you do is good. You are good and all you do is good, all you do is good, All you do is good. You release every captive, cut the shackles from slaves; Those who hate you, you ransom, give your blood for their shame. With the bent stem, you’re tender, shield the smoldering flame You bring home the unwanted, call the lost back by name. You are good and all you do is good. You are good and all you do is good. You are good and all you do is good, all you do is good, All you do is good. You lift up, you, you revive, you, you restore, you, you increase, you, You anoint, you, you fill up, you, you spill out, you, you release, you, You make grow, you, you bring forth, you, you call out, you, you set free, it’s Who you are. It’s who you were. It’s who you will always be. Your life is eternal, not in measure but kind, Running over with healing, inexhaustible might . You in us, and we in you, the delight in your face. Resting here we enjoy you, and our joy is your praise. You are good and all you do is good. You are good and all you do is good. You are good and all you do is good, all you do is good, All you do is good. Nathan Partain, 2015

Song in the Gospel “In Tenderness He Sought Me” All

In tenderness, he sought me, weary and sick with sin, And, on his shoulders, brought me into his flock again, While angels in his presence sang, until the courts of heaven rang. Oh, the love that sought me! Oh, the blood that bought me! Oh, the grace that brought me to the fold, wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! Wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! He washed the bleeding sin-wounds, and poured in oil and wine; He whispered to assure me, “I’ve found you, you are mine:” I never heard a sweeter voice, it made my aching heart rejoice. Oh, the love that sought me! Oh, the blood that bought me! Oh, the grace that brought me to the fold, wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! Wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! He pointed to the nail-prints, for me his blood was shed; A mocking crown so thorny, was placed upon his head: I wondered what he saw in me, to suffer such deep agony. Oh, the love that sought me! Oh, the blood that bought me! Oh, the grace that brought me to the fold, wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! Wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! I’m sitting in his presence, the sunshine of his face, While with adoring wonder, his blessings I retrace. It seems as if eternal days are far too short to sound his praise. Oh, the love that sought me! Oh, the blood that bought me! Oh, the grace that brought me to the fold, wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! Wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! Oh, the love that sought me! Oh, the blood that bought me! Oh, the grace that brought me to the fold, wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! Wondrous grace that brought me to the fold! words W. Spencer Walton, 1894; music Joseph Partain, 2010

Children’s Worship is for ages 4 through kindergarten and is a time for children to worship through song, Bible stories and response (art or story play). Children will return to the sanctuary before communion, and parents can pick them up at that time. Visitors are welcome, and parents are always invited to attend with their children.

Scripture Mark 4:1–20 Reader

Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge. 2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.” 1

9

Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that, 10

“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’” Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” 13

Notes:

Community Group Questions 1) There is a difference between doing/thinking the right thing and having the gospel transform our lives from the inside out. What are areas in your life where you might do “the right thing,” but you have not fully surrendered your heart to God? 2) How would your life look different if you allowed the gospel to fully take root in your heart? How would our church and our city look different if everyone at Redeemer allowed the gospel to fully take root in their hearts? 3) Take some time to share about the things that are keeping you from fully surrendering your heart to God. It could be things like a lack of desire to read the Bible, pride that you already know everything you need to know, or fear of how your life could change. Pray for each other that the Holy Spirit would help you push through these things.

8

Children’s Questions Jesus talks about faith being like a seed. It starts from something small, but when it is planted in the right soil and taken care of, it can grow into a giant tree. What are ways that we can “water our faith” like we water a seed? What are things that can act like weeds and try to keep our faith from growing? What’s great is that we do not need to do this all on our own, but we have the Holy Spirit to help us. Spend some time praying and asking the Holy Spirit to help you grow in your faith.

Call to Communion and Prayer Guidelines for the Reception of Communion Redeemer welcomes all Christians who are willing to forsake their sin and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation and who are members of congregations which proclaim the gospel to receive Communion with us. We will be coming forward for the distribution of Communion. Please eat the bread privately, and then drink the cup together with us after everyone has returned to their seats. Clear cups (located in the interior rings) contain grape juice. Red cups (exterior ring of tray) contain wine. Children who have been examined by the elders and admitted to the Lord’s Table are able to partake of Communion. The ministry of prayer is one of the ways we live together as a community of believers and seekers. During Communion, members of our prayer team are available at the front of the sanctuary. It would be our privilege to pray with you as we walk together through the joys and struggles of life. We also encourage you to pray with one another in the pews during this time of movement in our service.

Prayers Prayer for Guidance to Truth God, I don’t know how I feel about what I have heard today but I want to trust that you are good, that you are loving and that you are just. I want to know if you are the true God. If you are there would you guide my soul to the truest truth. I don’t want to be tricked or believe a lie. I don’t want to believe in something just to make me feel better. Please God, lead me to the truth. Prayer of Belief and Repentance Jesus, I believe that you are who you say you are: the Son of God and the savior of broken people like me. I need forgiveness. I need to be made new and to start over again. I now turn away from all I have been doing. I turn away from my self-centered life. I turn my whole heart toward you. I believe that when you were crucified, you took all of my evil and somehow you gave me all of your beauty. I invite your Holy Spirit to live in me. I do not want to live for myself any more. I want you to lead my life. I want to know you and to receive your love for me. Please teach me and protect me and guide me. I am yours. I ask these things in the name of Jesus. Amen. Prayer of Doubt and Faith God, I don’t really believe all of this but there is a part of my heart that knows there is truth and goodness here. I am confused by the fact that there are so many things that I don’t understand or that make me angry about you. There are also so many things that fill my heart with hope and many things that draw me to you and I want to put my trust in you. God, you say I can come to you and ask for anything so if you are real, please give me the faith I need to believe. Give me the desire to continue to seek after you. Keep my heart from self-deception. Protect me from any evil misleading or binding spirits. Calm my fears. Soften my cynicism. Be patient with me and if you are God, please don’t let me go but instead let me know that you are real. I have a little faith, help me in my doubt.

Song of Celebration “Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts” Ensemble

Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou Fount of Life, thou Light of Men, From the best bliss that earth imparts, we turn unfilled to thee again. We turn unfilled to thee again. Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; Thou savest those that on thee call; To them that seek thee thou art good, To them that find thee All in all. Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou Fount of Life, thou Light of Men, From the best bliss that earth imparts, we turn unfilled to thee again. We turn unfilled to thee again. We taste thee, O thou living Bread, And long to feast upon thee still; We drink of thee, the Fountainhead, And thirst our souls from thee to fill. Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou Fount of Life, thou Light of Men, From the best bliss that earth imparts, we turn unfilled to thee again. We turn unfilled to thee again. Our restless spirits yearn for thee Where’er our changeful lot is cast; Glad when thy gracious smile we see; Blest when our faith can hold thee fast. Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, thou Fount of Life, thou Light of Men, From the best bliss that earth imparts, we turn unfilled to thee again. We turn unfilled to thee again. words Bernard of Clairvaux, c. 1150; tr. Ray Palmer, 1858; music Bruce Benedict & Nathan Partain, 2001

Valediction

based on Psalm 46:1–3, 8–11 All

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Leader

Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

People

Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations the the evil in the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.

Leader

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Departing Hymn “Come Holy Ghost” All

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, and in our hearts, take up thy rest; Come with thy grace and heav’nly aid, To fill our hearts which thou hast made, To fill our hearts which thou has made. O Comforter, to thee we cry, thou heav’nly gift of God most high; Thou fount of life and fire of love, And sweet anointing from above, And sweet anointing from above. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. O Holy Ghost, through thee alone, know we the Father and the Son; Be this our firm unchanging creed, That thou dost from them both proceed, That thou dost from them both proceed. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. Praise we the Lord, Father and Son, and Holy Spirit with them one; And may the Son on us bestow, All gifts that from the Spirit flow, All gifts that from the Spirit flow. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you. Be not afraid, where you go, there I am with you All gifts that from the Spirit flow. Benediction 13

We are Amazed! The past few months have been incredible to experience how God has shown his generosity to us and through us, the Redeemer community. In November we reached out because we were below our budgeted needs. Throughout December, we together answered the call saw and $53,175.00 come in above what we budgeted! How do we respond to this kind of blessing? By being a blessing to others. The leadership team decided to use some of what God provided through us to partner with a few of our sister churches who are working to establish new works of the gospel in the area. Because of God’s grace through our community, we were able to outwardly give: • $5,000 to City Hope Fellowship - A young multi-cultural church plant in Muncie. • $5,000 to Living Branch - A four month old community in Noblesville • $10,000 to Hope - Our dear sister church in Bloomington Finally, with the $33,175 that remained, we are able to speed toward the goal to pay off the mortgage by March 18th and move toward our next work of the gospel here in downtown Indy. It has been humbling and fun this past month to see our hearts through what we give and to know in a new way that God is moving in his people to accomplish exciting things. Thank you for your gifts and please continue to pray that we would be able to keep up with where God is leading.

Other Updates Church Planting Fund • We are almost there! So many of you have rallied and we only have $78,619.70 left to raise. Our deadline, March 18th, is quickly approaching so if you have planned to give but have not yet, please let us know. Also, anything given above the goal will immediately go toward seeding a new community in the city. How incredible would it be to be able to start seeking the Lord in earnest for where he would have us plant another gospel community? • Pastors and elders are meeting with community groups this month to answer questions about our vision and fundraising efforts in this area. If you have questions or want to learn more, please email Ben Reed [[email protected]]. End of Year Financial Reporting • Our year end finances for 2017 are finalized. If you would like a report please contact ben@ redeemindy.org. • 2017 Giving statements were mailed at the end of January. If you have not received it or if you have any quesitons please email Ben Reed [[email protected]]. Once again, thank you for your generosity to the work Christ is doing in and through Redeemer!
