The 15th Sunday after Pentecost September 17, 2017 Pre-Service Devotion: Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Today’s Worship! Greeting and Prayer Opening Hymn 243 (red hymnal): Oh, That I Had a Thousand Voices The Confession and Absolution of Sins We come before our Holy God recognizing that we are sinful and daily need His forgiveness.

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen. P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, asking Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. 2

P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Therefore, we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O most merciful God, who hast given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. P: Almighty God our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. C: Amen.

The Introit Having received the Lord’s forgiveness, we are glad to enter into His courts with praise and thanksgiving. This entrance is made in the Introit with the Lord’s own Word, often from the Psalms.

P: Behold, O God, our Shield, and look upon the face of Your anointed; C: For a day in Your courts in better than a thousand. P: How amiable are Your tabernacles, O Lord of hosts! C: My soul longs, yes, even faints, for the courts of the Lord.

The Gloria Patri Latin for “Glory to the Father”

3

The Kyrie Latin for “O Lord.” We approach our Lord with a cry for help in all the needs of our earthly life.

The Gloria in Excelsis: “Glory to God in the Highest”

The Salutation (Greeting)

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

4

The Collect for the Day The main thoughts for the day are “collected” together in this prayer.

Pastor: Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, preserve your congregation of believers on earth with your never-failing mercy. Come to us in our weakness. Help us to avoid whatever is wicked and harmful and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation. We pray to you, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Epistle Reading: Romans 14:1-12 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God." 12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. 5

The Gradual The Gradual is a “Bridge of praise” that links the Old Testament with the New Testament.

P: It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord; C: And to sing praises unto Your name, O Most High. P: To show forth Your loving-kindness in the morning; C: And Your faithfulness every night. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! P: Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion; C: And to you shall vows be made. Hallelujah!

Pastor: The Gospel Reading comes from Matthew 18:21-35

The Gospel Reading: Matthew 18:21-35 Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" 22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven. 23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, 'Pay what you owe.' 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken 6

place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart." Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord.

The Apostle’s Creed We boldly confess what we believe.

C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven And is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn 324:1-3,7,8 (red hymnal): Jesus Sinners Doth Receive 7

The Sermon: Genesis 50:15-21 When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him." 16 So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave this command before he died, 17 'Say to Joseph, Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.' And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants." 19 But Joseph said to them, "Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21 So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones." Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

True Forgiveness Follows Through I. It forgets revenge and realizes God’s plan II. It pushes out fear and replaces it with peace

The Offertory

8

The Offering of Thankful Hearts In tangible evidence of our gratitude, we offer the Lord the gift of our money, remembering that He has first given to us that we might have to give to Him.

Prayer of the Church Hymn 779 (tan supplement): Redeemed, Restored, Forgiven The Collect for the Word The closing thoughts for the day are “collected” together in this prayer.

Pastor: Let us pray. Blessed Lord, who has caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for out learning, grant that we may hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and the comfort of Your Holy Word we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which You have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Benediction The blessing given by God for His people (Numbers 6:24-26).

Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord life up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

Closing Hymn 321 (red hymnal): O Faithful God, Thanks Be to Thee 9

Mark Weis, pastor of Grace Lutheran, Cape Coral FL, has accepted the call to St. Luke’s Lutheran, Lemmon SD. Immanuel Begins: A few weeks ago the academic year began at Immanuel Lutheran in Eau Claire, WI. During the opening service, President Sippert spoke about "The One-Way Street of Christian Education at Immanuel." High school enrollment begins with 110 total 10

students (33 freshmen, 29 sophomores, 24 juniors, and 24 seniors). We rejoice that this enrollment is slightly higher than last year and is an increase of three students from what was anticipated. In the college there are 20 total students with more of these being enrolled full-time than last year. At this time 11 students are pursuing the teaching ministry and five are preparing for seminary training. In seminary there are three students, two of them beginning the program with one vicaring, Samuel Naumann at Hales Corners, WI. We thank the Lord for all the blood-bought souls that will be immersed in His Word during their Immanuel experience. Hurricane Irma Update from Pastor Sam Rodebaugh (Winter Haven, FL): “Praise the Lord! I've heard from a number of members, and everyone is reporting the same thing. Shingles/siding blown off houses, trees downed in the yard (including the parsonage's avocado tree, sadly), widespread power outages along with cell service for some members. BUT, there have been no reports of major property damage or loss, and no injuries. There is lots of cleanup to be done over the next weeks, but all is well. The Lord sheltered us through the storm. Pastor Doug Priestap also asked me to report for Grace Lutheran Church in Live Oak, FL. They're in the same situation, downed trees, no power, but very grateful for the Lord's protection. We are all truly appreciative of all your prayers and messages, the support of our synod has been so encouraging. Thanks again.” CLC Financial Report - August CLC Financial Report

North Hall Reno Budget $300,000. Project Spent:

* $231,988

Notes: * General Fund offerings in August totaled $98,915 vs disbursements of $67,229, recovering from a negative balance of -$40,408 at the beginning the fiscal year to - $8,722. Congregational offerings fell short of congregational CBP estimates for the 1st 2 months by $10,000. * ILC Building Projects offerings in August totaled $15,479 vs disbursements of $121,389, of which $8,000 was for the monthly loan payment on the Academic Center and the balance for renovation expenses for North Hall boys’ dorm. The dorm renovation is complete (and occupied!) at a total cost of $255,000, $45,000 under budget. The balance in the Projects Fund is temporarily negative, but will become positive when the North Hall loan restores the Building Projects Fund to its pre-renovation balance of $24,000, a reserve to assure loan payments on the AC. Offerings substantially above this amount are paid directly on the loan principal. The North Hall renovation loan will now be rolled into the Academic Center loan balance to maintain one monthly loan payment. North Hall renovation included removal & replacement of the old, inefficient HVAC system, re-roofing, new windows through-out, high efficiency water heaters, and some spruce-up on this 37-year-old building. * CEF: revenues in August included $250,000 transferred from CEF investments for a congregational loan. * MDF: offerings in August totaled $12,060 vs disbursements of $18,024. * SAF: received $19,008 in August from offerings ($5,566) and student loans repaid ($13,442) vs disbursements of $31,229, mostly for student awards & loans allocated to student accounts for the 1st semester. The $65,412 SAF balance is a good start toward the SAF budget of $160,000, to provide student loans, grants, & scholarships. James E. Sandeen, CLC Treasurer Thomas J.
