THE

TO ALL WHO SERVE THE NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE MOVEMENT As this term comes to a close I am beyond proud of all that NULYP has accomplished. Members nationwide have channeled their inner superhero, balancing multiple responsibilities and dedication to The Movement. We have answered the call to BE THE MOVEMENT. This year YPs have become even more involved in community service, professional development and civic engagement – in the midst of today’s challenging political and social climate. Our advocacy efforts have increased tenfold in terms of raising awareness and supporting civic platforms and programs. We have achieved success in turning minds on to thinking about larger surroundings and being “woke,” demonstrated through our widespread efforts to encourage higher voter engagement and participation in our communities. I am especially proud of new initiatives this year including our increased presence in social media, launching the NULYP business directory and the YPFIT program. The YPFIT program provides members with education, resources, challenges and accountability to lead healthy and balanced lifestyles. This year, NULYP innovative promotion of physical and mental health initiatives has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We continue to add value to our membership and expand our demographic. We have increased our membership and welcomed new chapters, including a new NULYP presence in Arkansas; Akron, OH; and Bay Area, CA. As we approach our 20th anniversary in 2018, we are growing in the diversity of individuals involved in The Movement and we are conditioning ourselves to remain the premier advocacy organization for Young Professionals of color. We are an organization that continues to support the mission of the National Urban League while maintaining the ability to change with the times and appeal to multiple generations. Our membership now includes members of Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z and we must be agile enough to meet the needs of individuals at many different stages of Young Professional life. I thank my entire Executive Leadership Team for their exceptional service and sacrifice. We have effectively managed by fact, incorporating the use of data to better serve NULYP now and for years to come. We have achieved in Empowering Communities and Changing Lives and I encourage each of you to continue this level of impact. I specifically want to thank my Executive Vice President, Jamar Ward for being very supportive and stepping up to the occasion whenever necessary. I also thank Secretary Charlene Luma for her commitment to The Movement despite personal challenges. NULYP leadership involves a significant amount of work for no pay and I commend the selfless commitment of all of our leaders nationwide. Moving into a new term, I look forward to continuing the momentum to Shift Forward. I seek to Protect Our Progress from the past decade while increasing tools available to chapters to remain vibrant in service to their affiliates. I want us to continue to serve as the “New Talented Tenth,” exercising reciprocal responsibility to better ourselves and give back to our communities. We must step up and speak out and continue to BE THE MOVEMENT!

Yours in The Movement,

Carlos J. Clanton, President National Urban League Young Professionals

HISTORY

IN THE 1980s and 1990s, several Urban League affiliates recognized the need to prepare a new generation of young leaders to take the mantle of leadership of the Civil Rights Movement. Young African American men and women in their 20s and 30s were invited to participate in and take an active leadership role in their local affiliate Urban League programs and activities. These new professional auxiliary groups began to operate as programs of affiliates in:

6

These auxiliary groups actively supported the Urban League movement by educating other young professionals about the movement recruiting new members, furnishing young volunteers, sponsoring educational initiatives like youth mentoring and tutoring programs, coordinating fundraisers for scholarships and for the financial support of the affiliate, and delivering personal and professional development and networking opportunities to young professionals in their local communities. As these auxiliaries began to grow, the Affiliate leadership took note of their success and began to ponder the power of a national movement of young professionals across the country. Simultaneously, Hugh Price, then President and CEO of the National Urban League, realized the need to make this potential national movement into a reality. He held a historic “Young Professionals Dialog Session” with more than 200 young professionals in the New York area in April of 1998. This dialog session, in addition to a white paper submitted by Marcus Mitchell, ignited the spark that led to the formation of a working group, tasked with establishing the framework and foundation for the National Urban League Young Professionals.

Under the direction of Annelle Lewis, Senior Vice President of Affiliate Development and Programs, the working group again convened in New York in September of 1998. Led by Marcus Mitchell (Philadelphia, PA), the working group consisted of: • B. Michael Young (Washington, DC) • Brian Anderson (Boston, MA) • Chontell Macon (Providence, RI) • Felecia Carrington (Houston, TX) • Jennifer Braxton (Philadelphia, PA) • Karla Ballard (Wilmington, DE) • Kevin Hooks (Los Angeles, CA) • Kim Beason (Milwaukee, WI) • Melinda Emerson (Philadelphia, PA) • Rhonda Utley-Herring (Trenton, NJ) • Shawn Barney (New Orleans, LA) • Toi Anderson-Bennett (New York, NY) • Tyra Metoyer (Houston, TX) • Vernice Black (Philadelphia, PA)

They met on several occasions throughout the year to develop the foundation and structure of the implementation of the organization. The National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP) was unveiled at the 1999 National Urban League Annual Conference in Houston, TX. Marcus Mitchell assumed the role President and under his leadership the organization began to define itself and to carve out its role in the National Urban league movement. The leadership team met regularly to refine the structure of the organization as well as to develop its first draft of bylaws. Soon thereafter a special election was held to fill the open positions on the newly established NULYP executive board.

FUTURE OF NULYP At the founding of the National Urban League 108 years ago it was realized that people from all walks of life desire to have access to careers, proper healthcare and the opportunity to take care of their families. We, as Urban Leaguers who happen to be Young Professionals, are still carrying out that Movement. We are a diverse group of individuals who believe in serving these principles by devoting time, talent or treasure to positively impact others’ lives. As long as you have the passion to serve, NULYP can provide the opportunity and training to lead at all levels of the organization. We are about cultivation. As we Shift Forward, YPs should be energized to enter into our 20th year more involved and engaged than ever. We must continue to advocate for increased civic engagement to Protect Our Progress in the communities we serve. Our forthcoming Leadership Series will offer members the opportunity to learn from internal, corporate and civil rights leaders. This knowledge of best practices and experiential insights will provide YPs with an even greater skill set for Empowering Communities and Changing Lives. NULYP will remain committed to uphold and uplift the mission of the National Urban League and BE THE MOVEMENT.

THIS IS HOW WE BOUNCE BACK: YP ROADMAP TO 2018 MIDTERM/ LOCAL ELECTION ENGAGEMENT

QUESTION: How do we effectively bounce back from a general election marred by low voter turnout and engagement? ANSWER: Prepare for 2018 Midterm election success by taking strategic action NOW.

(B) BRIDGE the gap.

Register and engage young voters. Give them a place at the table. Challenge young voters to host community registration drives/ phone banks to legislators, etc. Host multi-generational town halls / “state of the city” panels/ creative activism sessions, etc.

(O) OCCUPY the narrative.

Connect to our national policy agenda via the Washington Bureau. Engage in letter writing/ phone bank/ thunderclap campaigns to amplify our policy position. Raise awareness of our efforts through op-eds, magazine/ newspaper articles/ public testimony/ television interviews, etc.

(U) UNDERSTAND the issues.

Attend state legislative days/ local civic meetings (Ex: city council/ school board/ public commission meetings) Track relevant bills through your state legislature Share information via General Body meetings, education forums, newsletters, and/or serial web blogs (Ex: “5 Things You Need to Know about the Last City Council Meeting” OR “State Bills to Watch”)

(N) NO voter left behind.

Work to remove a prevalent voter barrier in your community (access to voter IDs, transportation to polls, restoration of voting rights, etc.)

(C) CHECK the record.

Where do prospective political candidates stand on our policy agenda? Review their voting records/ actions. Do they align with our Urban League values and policy positions? Formulate issue-focused community questionnaires for prospective political candidates to assist with voting. Host single-topic candidate forums.

(E) EVERY election counts.

Create a community calendar/ palm cards for all upcoming local elections; leave them at strategic locations around the city (e.g. churches, schools, popular eateries, salons, barber shops); post on social media pages and chapter websites.

NATIONAL DAY OF EMPOWERMENT ECONOMIC IMPACT: OUR DOLLARS, OUR VOICE National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP) chapters nationwide engaged in an annual Day of Empowerment on Saturday, November 19th. NULYP aimed to empower the black entrepreneur, as well as the black consumer. Chapters hosted events, in partnership with National Urban League Guilds and Entrepreneurship Centers, that educate both chapter and community members about circulating their dollar in local communities. Chapters continued to highlight economic empowerment year-round. Additionally, NULYP created a Young Professionals (YP) Business Directory. NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS 2017 ANNUAL REPORT

More than 40 + chapters around the country participated, hosting various events from Minority Business Expos, Cash Mob Networking Socials, and Black Business Scavenger Hunts. To help multiply the impact, chapters in nearby regions such as the New Jersey chapters (Union County, Essex County, and Bergen County) collaborated to host one major community event, Rise Up: Empowerment for Entrepreneurs, an all day entrepreneurs summit for aspiring entrepreneurs, established entrepreneurs, and teenagers. All National Day of Empowerment events were free and open to the public. The official hashtags for the nationwide series of events were #NDOE16 and #YPEmpowered.

NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE

NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS 2017 ANNUAL REPORT

National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP) chapters nationwide celebrated service by joining together on Saturday, April 29th to promote comprehensive educational opportunities and mentoring. NULYP chapters explored the connection between the sciences and the arts, and organized events that emphasized the creative aspects of both. Youth mentoring was emphasized in partnership with relevant STEAM, STEM and arts organizations. This year’s National Day of Service focused on two main areas:

16

1) STEAM Education: A well-rounded education in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with the inclusion of the arts, allowing youth to be creative and innovative, while increasing their possible career options and engaging them in schoolwork that captures their interests 2) Mentoring: Everyone needs a support system and mentors can play key roles in one’s life. Many successful individuals note formal and informal mentoring relationships in their personal and professional development, from youth to career. National Day of Service events were free and open to the public. NULYP chapter events can be found using the hashtags #NDOS2017, #DREAMSTEAM and #YPEMPOWERED.
