Schyler Sheltrown, soprano Christine Roberts, mezzo-soprano Isaac Frishman, tenor Kyle White, baritone

Biographies David Rayl is professor of music, director of choral programs, and associate dean for graduate studies and research at the Michigan State University College of Music. Under his baton the University Chorale has appeared at the national convention of the American Choral Directors Association, the Central Division convention of ACDA, and the national meeting of the College Music Society. He has also prepared the Chorale for five sets of performances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Rayl has appeared as guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the U.S. He has led all-state choirs in Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Mississippi. His international engagements include the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria; the V Festival di Musica Antica in Urbino, Italy; the VII Festival Internaçional de Música de Camera do Pará, in Belem, Brazil; the II Festival de Corais in Brasilia, Brazil; the Painel Unicanto de Regencia Coral in Londrina, Brazil; and the Classical Music Festival in Montreal and Quebec City, Canada. In 2009 he was one of the first recipients of the MSU College of Music’s Dortha J. and John D. Withrow Award for Excellence in Teaching. Tenor Isaac Frishman is a second-year doctoral student at Michigan State studying under Richard Fracker. Featured roles include Ferrando in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, and Henrik in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. Frishman has participated in summer programs at Chautauqua Opera and Oberlin in Italy. In the upcoming year, he will be a featured soloist with the Jackson Symphony after winning a contract through the Harold Haugh Vocal Competition. He accepted a position with Des Moines Metro Opera where he will be appear in January as Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Mezzo-soprano Christine Roberts has performed the title roles in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride and in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe, Jenny in Weill’s The Threepenny Opera, Hermia in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Third Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. As a concert soloist, she performed in Corigliano’s Fern Hill with the DePaul University Concert Choir and Mozart’s Missa Brevis in C Major with the MSU Chorale. Roberts is pursuing a Master of Music degree in vocal performance at MSU, studying with Jane Bunnell. Next semester, Roberts will sing as Jiao Mu in Jin Xiang’s The Savage Land with MSU Opera Theatre in both Beijing and East Lansing. Schyler Sheltrown, an operatic soprano, earned her bachelor’s degree from MSU in 2014 and will earn her master’s degree in 2016, under the tutelage of Melanie Helton. In her five years as a Spartan vocalist, Sheltrown has performed seven lead roles with MSU’s Opera Theatre. Next spring, she will return to China for a third time to collaborate with the MSU-China project, performing the role of Jin Zi in Jin Xiang’s The Savage Land at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. This is her first performance as a soloist for Messiah. Baritone Kyle White has had a full and exciting first year of voice after switching from tuba performance to vocal performance in 2014. Roles performed include Schaunard in La Bohème, Mr. Beebe in A Room With a View, and Bamatabois and Brujon in Les Misérables. White spent the past summer as a young artist with the Seagle Music Colony where he made his operatic debut as Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance at MSU where he studies with Melanie Helton.
