Introduction Microvolunteering Day was held on the 15th April 2015. This was the second time such an Awareness Day had been held. It’s reach was intended to be international. The purpose of Microvolunteering Day was to increase awareness of the microvolunteering concept around the world in the hopes that the general public, the voluntary sector, nonprofits and the business world would become more familiar with ways of making their spare moments more impactful.

Definition There are quite a few definitions of microvolunteering, but an overall generic one could be described as no commitment, on demand actions that can be completed in a short amount of time, usually under 1 hour. Microvolunteering actions can be online or offline.

The Day was primarily aimed at: engaging individuals in micro tasks stimulating discussion on the concept sharing images and stories via #microday

inspiring charities, the voluntary sector, nonprofits and the business world to embrace the idea

Background The organisation behind Microvolunteering Day was HelpFromHome.org, considered to be a leading promoter of microvolunteering actions. The inaugural Microvolunteering Day in 2014 was viewed as a huge success, as it was the first time that organisations from around the world came together to discuss or arrange a microvolunteering event in synchronisation with each other. To this end, many initiatives came out of the woodwork expressing an interest in the microvolunteering concept that weren’t known about before Microvolunteering Day. The second Microvolunteering Day was intended to build on this success and increase awareness of the concept not only within the voluntary sector but also within the nonprofit and business worlds.

Promotion Promotion for Microvolunteering Day began in January 2015 & targetted: - UK, US, New Zealand and Canadian volunteer centres - UK student union volunteering societies - all the known microvolunteering platforms in the world - various UK youth organisations - nonprofits with known microvolunteering projects - various voluntary involved organisations (mainly in the UK) - a few businesses with known employee volunteering programmes

Highlights Whilst the momentum behind microvolunteering is continuing to rise, many organisations are arranging events in isolation of each other. It was therefore encouraging to see so many initiatives come together with activities, ideas, articles that all revolved around the microvolunteering concept. Here’s some notable highlights of the day, amongst many: Aberdeen based ACVO in the UK launched a dedicated microvolunteering platform The United Nations Volunteering organisation discussed Microvolunteering Day UK based Southwark VC launched their #SouthwarkHour microvolunteering campaign Pakistan based ‘World This Morning’ TV show devoted a whole programme to the concept A dedicated Microvolunteering Day Facebook account was set up in Australia The worlds southernmost school based in Antarctica, participated UK based Motor Neurone Disease initiative appeared to be the most active organisation Volunteer Centres from New Zealand and US promoted the concept. None did last year #microvolunteering trended on Twitter (see image below) Etc, etc, etc

Conclusion Microvolunteering Day 2015 was again a huge success whose reach and impact extended even further than last year. The microvolunteering movement is still considered a fledgling area of the voluntary sector, so it was encouraging to see it being discussed by likes of the United Nations Volunteer Group and the Inter American Scout Region. With activities being held in places like Antarctica, Argentina, United Kingdom, Pakistan and Australia, it truly does seem to be becoming a global movement. However, there’s still a long way to go, particularly with the type of activities organisations were promoting on the day. Most of them centered around Social Media, ReTweets or Facebook Likes. We suspect this was in part down to the term ‘microvolunteering’ trending on Twitter that day, where organisations wanted to be seen riding this trend with some quick set up actions. Microvolunteering is so much more than the above mentioned perceived ‘slacktivist’ social media actions. In the words of Kirsten Stephenson, Volunteering Development Manger at UK based NCVO, ....there is still a bit of a misconception about the kinds of roles that count as Micro volunteering. There is so much diversity out there! People just need to take some time out to think through it more carefully and be a bit creative. That’s what we tried to encourage people to do in our guidance. (1) So Microvolunteering Day 2015 has taught us one thing (well, in fact loads of things if truth be told) in that more preparation is needed to educate organisations about the more ‘meaty’ microvolunteering roles that the public can and indeed want to engage in. Susan Murray, Assistant Director Public Affairs at UK based SCVO, summed it up neatly for next years Microvolunteering Day with the following tips for nonprofits, in her article, ‘The winners in yesterday’s #MicroDay’ http://bit.ly/1Hczh9q 1. Focus on one hashtag – let’s work together to raise awareness in advance and agree on one hashtag to ensure maximum traction. 2. Get it in your content plan – many charities reacted quickly once they saw it trending but a little preparation could have resulted in more traction and action. 3. Put your direct ask in your tweet - on an awareness day like this where there are lots of messages, making your ask in a link reduces the chances of it being read. 4. Get your message in an image – using an image in your tweet can give a 35% boost in retweets. Actions By Organisations Microvolunteering Day was supported by quite a variety of organisations, who organised events where micro-actions were either participated in by their staff or their supporters. The information below is in no particular order of importance. ACVO, is based in the UK and is Aberdeen’s third sector interface. It used Microvolunteering Day to launch it’s own mobile optimised dedicated microvolunteering platform for the citizens of Aberdeen to make a contribution to their community.

Event Article - extracted from http://bit.ly/1GwrrsF “On Micro volunteering Day 2015 ACVO were delighted to be part of the launch of Scotland’s first dedicated mobile optimised website for micro volunteering-Volunteering Bytes. Organised by Aberdeen City Council/Community Planning Aberdeen and Pathways the launch of Volunteering Bytes provided people with the opportunity to learn more about this fantastic new initiative, view Volunteering Bytes and provide feedback, with ipads available for people to have a go too. Lyndsay Johnstone and Julie Milne from Aberdeen City Council provided participants with background to Volunteering Bytes and how it connects to the Community Planning Aberdeen Volunteering Strategy ‘Making the Difference: Volunteering in Aberdeen’ which is bringing everyone together to help make Aberdeen the best place to volunteer.”

Feedback - sent via email “Yep, we had 12 I-Pads and everyone tried out microvolunteering. The Lord Provost of Aberdeen City Councillor George Adam who is a big supporter of volunteering even said that before he gave his speech/welcomed people he did the micro volunteering one where you answer questions and rice is donated through the World Food Programme (he donated 50 grains of rice in a couple of minutes). He was so inspired by this he continued to do more and says that he will make a note to do micro volunteering each day and encourage everyone to get involved. Everyone fed back how exciting and engaging micro volunteering is. It highlighted really well how people can make an impact/positive difference. Really great.”

US based Legion of Frontiersmen, Disaster Management Group, held a mock disaster scenario on Microvolunteering Day to keep its microvolunteering members in a ready state of preparedness. Event Information - extracted from their newsletter No. 2015-04 14 April 2015 “April's Exercise Celebrating International Micro-Volunteer Day For April our exercise is tied to International Micro-Volunteer Day with play starting when you receive this newsletter and ending at midnight Eastern Daylight Time on 15 April. The general scenario is the impact of a tsunami on the south coast of our exercise country, the Republic of Perilo. We need disaster observer reports to help us assess the extent of the impact. As in our previous exercises you have a choice of what to report. Pick the situation you like from the ones below, and make the report based on that single situation. Situation 1 - you are the light keeper at the Cape San Blas lighthouse. A massive wave just swept across the Cape at your location. Situation 2 - you are the platform supervisor of Oceanic Petroleum Platform 2C in the Southwest Oilfield approximately 100 miles south of the coast. You just felt an intense earthquake. Situation 3 - you are a Coast Guard vessel traffic observer at the mouth of the Portsmouth Bay. You have seen what appear to be very large waves washing across the barrier islands. A quick reminder - to make a Spot Report go to our Disaster Spot Report page at: http://legionoffrontiersmen.org/node/add/disast er-observer-spot-report Thank you in advance for your report and for helping to make our exercise successful. UK based Volunteer Centre Southwark, launched their new #SouthwarkHour campaign where a person can nominate someone to volunteer at helping a worthwhile cause, for one hour. Event Information - extracted from http://bit.ly/1biCaJw “#SouthwarkHour – Give a little time, make a big difference On Wednesday 15 April Microvolunteering Day was celebrated by Volunteer Centre Southwark by helping to launch the Southwark Hour - #SouthwarkHour, where you can nominate someone to volunteer at helping a worthwhile cause, for one hour. Southwark Hour is an initiative launched by Volunteer Centre Southwark in April 2015 to promote Micro-volunteering. Many people lead busy lives, so traditional forms of volunteering are not easy to access as they struggle to meet the time commitment needed. Some people also consider volunteering but are not quite sure whether to take the plunge. In both scenarios Micro-volunteering offers a solution- a chance to dip your toe in the water and see if volunteering is for you. Alasdair Southwark HourSouthwark Hour is also beautifully simple. You just nominate a friend via Twitter, challenge them to give an hour to a cause or organisation that means something to either you or them (it doesn’t have to be a formally constituted organisation, it could be tidying up your neighbourhood or helping an elderly neighbour cut back their garden)- they then make contact and offer an hour of their time. Once they’ve completed their challenge they reply to your tweet confirming this, and then they can nominate someone else. Please remember to use #SouthwarkHour so we can all track the wonderful things happening in Southwark. Of course this is not entirely new, most of us probably remember the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ that was all the rage a couple of years ago. But we hope Southwark Hour will offer much needed support to community and voluntary organisations in the borough, and also encourage more people to try volunteering. So please get nominating! Nominate your friends, nominate your workmates, even nominate your boss! So far we’ve had councillors and staff from the local council and voluntary sector taking part, but we can’t wait to see more and more residents, employees and visitors taking the plunge. How many hours will we manage by the end of the year? You decide! And don’t forget- #SouthwarkHour”

UK based Chester Voluntary Action, used MicroDay to launch microvolunteering as a new concept within the portfolio of volunteering opportunities they offer to the public, as well as accepting micro-actions from nonprofits. Event Information - extracted from http://bit.ly/1EJDy1N “Microvolunteering Day 2015 - What is Microvolunteering? There are a number of different definitions to describe the concept of Microvolunteering but the most generic one that encapsulates its true essence is: ‘bite-sized, on-demand, no commitment actions that benefit a worthy cause’ We are keen to mark this annual day, which this year falls on Wednesday 15th April, but we also want to use this as the date in which to launch Microvolunteering as a new concept, not only to attract new volunteers but for our members to make the most of the time that people have available throughout the year and not just on one day a year. What Next? We will be promoting micro-volunteering opportunities via a link on our homepage alongside the regularly updated ‘Latest Opportunities’ for general volunteering roles. Please get in touch with your ideas and we’ll do the rest by promoting your opportunities.”

Despite this we had lots of interest and engagement. We ran two e-petitions, including a Hunger IQ quiz. We also ran a knitting activity where students could knit a square for a blanket that would be donated to a local hospital. The knitting was not so popular, but the e-petitions attracted about a dozen students.”

US based The Post Oak High School, used MicroDay as a springboard to participate in the Red Sands Project, which is an activist artwork created to raise awareness of modern-day slavery. Event Information Participants in the Red Sand Project are invited to fill sidewalk cracks with red sand or other materials, and then share an image of their transformation with the global community using the #RedSandProject. These installations are then set to remind us that we can’t merely ‘mind the gap’ and walk over the most overlooked and marginalized populations in our communities – those who fall through the metaphoric cracks. These populations are most at risk of being enslaved, spending their lives being exploited for the profit of others. The photos below are of students filling in the pavement cracks with red sand on Microvolunteering Day as part of their Service Palooza week.

UK based Monmouthshire County Council, used #MicroDay as a springboard to reach out to the community it serves and ask for ideas that could have an impact in Monmouthshire where the action would only last 10 minutes. Event Information - extracted from http://bit.ly/1FOoLDz Micro Volunteering Day is Wed 15th April. How could we make an impact in Monmouthshire collectively? Microvolunteering can be described as easy, no commitment actions that benefit worthy causes that can be completed generally in under 30 minutes. They can be conducted either online or offline and performed on the go, on demand and on a person’s own terms. The sheer flexibility of microvolunteering opportunities means they can be conducted at home, at the bus stop, the doctor’s waiting room - anywhere really! With this successful movement sweeping across the world, is there development opportunities within Monmouthshire? Ideas like http://freerice.com/#/english-vocabulary/1885 have been successful with Micro Volunteers playing a game for 10 minutes that has social benefits and a feel good factor.
