COMRADE OF LABOUR (STAR) Nasordin Mohd Hashim President, Building Construction And Timber Industries Employees’ Union Nominated by National Trades Union Congress

Nasordin has served as a union leader of the Building Construction And Timber Industries Employees’ Union (BATU) since 1993, when he was elected as the first union Branch Chairman of the ESMACO branch. From 1999, Nasordin served with distinction, first as an Executive Committee member of BATU, where he was eventually elected as Assistant General Secretary in 2001, and subsequently as the union’s General Secretary from end 2001. In 2008, Nasordin was elected as the President of the union, a position he has held till now. Since 2003, Nasordin has also served and contributed as a member in various NTUC committees, and is a very active contributor and participant in the activities and initiatives of NTUC and tripartite partners. He gives strong support to the Labour Movement and tripartite causes through his current and past appointments in various committees, including Chairman of the NTUC Building and Facilities Management Services Cluster Committee; Member, and subsequently Vice Chairman, of NTUC Industrial Relations Committee (Industrial Sector). He was also appointed as Member of the NTUC Industrial Relations Council, and Member of the Tripartite Clusters for Cleaners and Landscape Industry. With his in-depth knowledge of the cleaning industry, he contributed positively to the development of the Progressive Wage Model for cleaners and landscape technicians. At NTUC Club, Nasordin has been involved for some 8 years, serving on both the Management Council and Costa Sands Resort (Pasir Ris) Advisory Committee. He has provided invaluable advice to NTUC Club, particularly relating to members’ feedback and engagement. At the union level, Nasordin is instrumental in helping BATU achieve her many milestones. Under his leadership, BATU’s total membership increased more than 85 per cent from 23,000 in 2006 to 43,000 in 2017.
