BACKGROUND

OBJECTIVES

As Malaysia’s urban population reaches 73%, there is a need to acknowledge the importance of ensuring our cities and urban areas are able to sustain the needs of our growing population.

The National Urban Forum is a form of support to urban development processes in the country as well as contributing to international urban policy dialogues and strategies. Specific objectives include, amongst others:

Our urban areas are responsible for our economic production and at the same time it consumes 70% of our energy consumption and emits carbon emission.

Adding inclusivity to the national urban development and its related planning process, promoting active local participation, encouraging dialogues and consensus among all stakeholders;

The forum shall be a platform to bring together innovative strategies on social, economic and environmental matters that can be adopted to overcome our challenges and contributing towards better urban resilience in the face of many challenges faced by our cities and nation. The forum shall be a 1.5-day programme, where 4 plenary sessions will discuss on several topics that are crucial to set a new urban agenda for Malaysia. The highlight of the event shall be the Special Plenary, where Ministers that represents key sectors such as Urban Wellbeing and Housing, Women and Community Development as well as Youth Development shall be invited to share their views, concerns and aspiration on our urban futureent shall be invited to share their views, concerns and aspiration on our urban future

Provide broad-base and holistic substantive inputs to urban policies and programs; Advocate and raise awareness on the relevance and effectiveness of related urban policies and plans to an extended audience; Increase understanding on sustainable urban development issues, including monitoring of national trends and impacts; and Enhance capacity at national and local level through exchange of experiences and trainings.
