Opportunity Summary The Challenge America category offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Age alone does not qualify a group as underserved; at least one of the underserved characteristics noted above also must be present. Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development. This category encourages and supports the following objective: Engagement: Engaging the public with diverse and excellent art. Challenge America grants:  Extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations.  Are limited to the specific types of projects outlined below.  Are for a fixed amount of $10,000 and require a minimum $10,000 match. Three possible project types:  Guest Artist project type, which refers to an arts event or events that will feature one or more guest artists.  Cultural Tourism, specifically the unified promotion of community-wide arts activities and/or the development of cultural tourism products to enhance public engagement with arts and culture in communities and in cultural districts.  Pubic Art project type supports the development of professionally directed public art projects.

Eligibility & Requirements: 

There are no restrictions or limits except for applicant organization.

Internal Nomination Process: Interested applicants should send the following documents in sequence in one PDF to [email protected] no later than 4 p.m. on March 2, 2017: 1. JHU Limited Submission Cover Sheet 2. Abstract (one page, double-spaced) 3. Proposal (maximum of four pages of text only, single spaced: 12-pt font and one-inch margins) (Note: figures, tables, and other reference material may be included in addition to the 4 pg. text limit) 4. Curriculum Vitae of investigator, including current external research support and publications 5. Budget (two pages maximum) 6. Letter of Recommendation from the Department Chair/Director. Letters of Recommendation can be submitted separately to [email protected] stating the applicant’s name in the subject line. Each applicant should expect to receive a confirmation of receipt of their materials. Applicants not receiving an acknowledgement, or having any questions, should contact the team via [email protected].
