NEEDY  PETS   This week, Chris puts his doctor hat on again to address a rising issue in the pet world. Why is my pet so needy? Feeling left out or lonely might be the obvious explanation but some of the behaviours that it can result in are not so obvious. Dr. Chris shows us how to identify if you’re pet is needy and what you can do to help settle them down.

WHY  IS  MY  PET  SO  NEEDY?   Remember, our pets would sell all their toys, their beds and even their other furry family for just a few more minutes a day of your undivided attention. Your time is the most sought after currency there is. It equates to love…but also acceptance and security. This urge is something almost all dogs and cats have. The fact is our pets have developed so many of these attention-seeking behaviours because our busy lives have made them so desperate for our company. The less they see us, the more they want us. In their eyes, we’re being unfair so now they’re super keen for our time. And you can’t blame them.

MOST  COMMON  ATTENTION  SEEKING  BEHAVIOURS   The most common signs of neediness all have one thing in common – they’re almost impossible to ignore. And that’s exactly why they do it. They know that nice dogs and cats finish last. They have to come up with something so bizarre that you can’t help but say their name, acknowledge them or let them inside. These common behaviours include: 1. Jumping up 2. Pawing at Doors 3. Licking Legs 4. Licking floors or walls 5. Waking you up early

WHAT  CAN  YOU  DO?   For starters, it’s a compliment. They love spending time with you, but you absolutely have to set boundaries. Attention is crucial for all pets. They live for it but they should know that there are times where they just can’t get it.   The number one thing you can do is ignore their needy behaviours. To even say their name will encourage and reinforce their behaviour. Try teaching your pup things that they can occupy themselves with, like puzzles based toys as this will keep them entertained while you’re away and make them realize that they don’t need you around as much as they think. Try also preventing them from monitoring you to excess. If they follow you around constantly and are always at your feet, try encouraging them to wait in other rooms and to sleep further away from you. If you’re concerned that this behavior is impacting their life, consult a behavior expert or see your vet.
