Female Enterprise: Women Business and Property Owners in New Orleans

Making Groceries

RD

This exhibit presents a selection of women who owned real estate or businesses in New Orleans during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Ranging from the well-known, like the Baroness Pontalba, to the obscure, like midwife Susie A. Carter, each contributed in some way to the economy of the Crescent City. The exhibit uses municipal and civil court records, directories, newspapers, and other sources in the Louisiana Division/City Archives to illustrate who these women were and how they represent the spirit of female enterprise in New Orleans. Curated by Wayne Everard and Irene Wainwright.

Join Notarial Archivist Sally Reeves for a discussion about how the public markets of New Orleans were once synonymous with urban life. From colonial times forward, the city put major stock into its market system, which became big business for the economy. It was an incubator for many of the city’s old French restaurants and functioned as a major employer and free market forum until well into the 20th century. NEW & IMPROVED A new Nora Navra Library and an improved Main Library Nora Navra Library 1902 St. Bernard Ave.

Nora Navra Library, 1960

The Nora Navra Library, originally called Branch 9, opened in two temporary locations during 1946. The original permanent 2,500-square-foot building, located at 1902 St. Bernard Avenue, was dedicated as the Nora Navra Library on May 2, 1954. The building was severely damaged during Hurricane Katrina and remained closed until it was demolished in 2017. Construction on the new 7,800-square-foot building is currently being completed, and a Community Celebration and Open House is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2018. Once the library opens, all six libraries that were damaged beyond repair by Hurricane Katrina will have been rebuilt.

Main Library 219 Loyola Ave. On December 15, 1958, the new Main Library at 219 Loyola Avenue opened its doors to the public for the first time. In its almost 60-year history, the Main Library has never received any significant renovation work, until now. The updates will primarily occur on the first floor and will include a new layout that utilizes the space more efficiently, new flooring, painting, new shelving, additional computers, and new furniture. The new layout will feature a lobby with exhibit displays, a program/community meeting room, a selfcheckout area, and an expanded computer/tech area. Due to the work being performed, the Main Library will be closed from Sunday, April 15 through Sunday, April 29 to complete the final steps of the renovation.
