The New Zealand Law Society (NZLS) regulates all lawyers in New Zealand. NZLS also provides assistance to the public in interacting with legal professionals. This includes guidance on how to choose a lawyer, what to expect from your lawyer, how much your lawyer should cost, and how to complain about your lawyer if you are not happy.

New Zealand Ministry of Justice administers the nation's legal aid system. If you cannot afford a lawyer then you may have recourse to legal aid. If you have any queries regarding whether you are entitled to legal aid, about your legal aid lawyer or having to repay legal aid then you may wish to contact the Ministry of Justice, or once of its regional legal aid offices.

Community Law Centres provide free legal advice on a range of legal problems. You may wish to visit a Community Law Centre to consult a free legal advisor face to face. The Community Law Centres also produce a range of literature that may be useful to your problem.

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) seeks to promote knowledge and understanding alongside support where people's rights are involved. Their advice is free and they have extensive experience in legal matters. Local CABs allow access to advice in most localities in New Zealand. The Office of the Ombudsman is an independent authority that helps the community in its dealings with government agencies. If you have a complaint against a government agency, such as the Department of Corrections, then you may escalate your complaint to the Ombudsman.
