A LETTER FROM YOUR PASTOR Dear Newmanites, It is with great joy that I begin my new ministry as Executive Director of the Newman Centre and Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. During my MSc and PhD studies in Medical Science and Neuroscience (1998-2004) at the University of Toronto, I used to attend daily Mass and weekly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at St. Thomas Aquinas and volunteer as a Lay Minister to the Sick at Princess Margaret Hospital. It was an oasis of peace from the stresses of the hospital lab. Both Father Tom Rosica and Father Pat O’Dea were great pastors to us throughout that time. One of the most memorable moments I recall took place during our Taize prayer service we had during World Youth Day. The Newman community managed to capture the spirit of joy that was felt all over Toronto and make it present on campus. After graduating from U of T, I began my Philosophy degree through the Oratory of St. Phillip Neri and later completed my Theology degree at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, Italy, the same place where Blessed Cardinal Newman himself prepared for the priesthood in 1846-1847. Afterwards, I had the privilege of working as a missionary amongst the poor in the Mongolian desert for almost 3 years. Living in the desert surrounded by little more than sheep and goats was a blessed preparation for the greatest moment of my life which took place on September 1st, 2012. After 32 years of wrestling with God over my vocation, I was finally ordained a priest at 40 years of age. Over the past two years I have been ministering to the St. Clare of Assisi Catholic community in Woodbridge as their Associate Pastor. With 9000 families, about 8,970 more than in the Gobi, it was a great opportunity to return to my first home and share the Gospel and minister to them. During this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, I come among you as both a brother and spiritual father in Christ hoping to build upon the fine work of my predecessors in forming spiritually and intellectually mature Catholics. It is a great blessing to work with a team of staff whose ministry is motivated by a deep love for both Jesus Christ and His Church. Only God knows what the future will bring, however, as our Patron Blessed Cardinal Newman’s famous prayer “Some Definitive Purpose” states: God has created me to do Him some definite service He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another I have my mission. May the grace of the Lord be upon each of us as we grow as “fellow workers in the truth” (3 Jn: 8) In Christ, Father Peter Turrone

Pope Francis “What an illusion it is when people today shut their eyes in the face of sickness and disability! They fail to understand the real meaning of life, which also has to do with accepting suffering and limitations. The world does not become better because only apparently ‘perfect’ people live there – I say ‘perfect’ rather than ‘false’ – but when human solidarity, mutual acceptance and respect increase. How true are the words of the Apostle: “God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong. (1 Corinthians 1:27)!” (Homily at Jubilee for Sick and Disabled, June 12, 2016)

JULY - AUGUST 2016

STATEMENT BY CARDINAL COLLINS ON PASSING OF EUTHANASIA BILL C-14 Cardinal Thomas Collins issued a statement regarding the government's passage of Bill C-14, which legalized euthanasia/assisted suicide on Friday, June 17, 2016. Euthanasia comes to Canada “There are two ways, the way to life and the way to death, and there is a great difference between them.” These wise words from an ancient Christian writer come to mind as we mark Parliament’s enactment of the law implementing the Supreme Court’s decision on euthanasia and assisted suicide, which is a fundamentally misguided decision. Though I do not question the good intentions of either judges or legislators, their decisions have set our country down a path that leads not simply, and obviously, towards physical death for an increasing number of our fellow citizens, but towards a grim experience for everyone in our society of the coldness of spiritual death. That death is found in a loss of respect for the dignity of the human person, in a deadening pressure upon the vulnerable to be gone, and in an assault upon the sanctuary of conscience to be suffered by good individuals and institutions who seek only to heal. To those who are grievously suffering in body or spirit and who desperately seek relief: we need to be sure that you receive it, through whatever medical means are available, and through the loving care that you deserve. The question is not whether you need relief; it is how to find it. Suicide is not the answer to the very real question you face. Some may be consoled by the fact that the law could be worse: there are some “safeguards” protecting the vulnerable, and there is some conscience protection. Any thankfulness for these positive elements must, however, be set against the fact that in other places where euthanasia has been introduced, it has always been cloaked with “safeguards” that lull the citizens into complacency. Over the years those “safeguards” gradually weaken and finally drop away, and then the full hard cold force of euthanasia is felt. Here is a chilling fact: despite the confidence of the Supreme Court justices that Canada is different from those jurisdictions, in only slightly more than a year since their decision, the “safeguards” are already under vigorous attack. The deepest roots of this malign development in the history of our country are spiritual, and so in the weeks to come I will be suggesting ways to address them through prayer and penance. Our broader society also needs to engage in the necessary but lengthy process of reflection upon the dire implications for every aspect of our life together when we lose the fundamental ability to distinguish between dying and being killed. We all need to recognize the profound moral significance of that distinction. We also need to recognize the destructive consequences of reducing the dignity of the human person to a matter of autonomy, when actually it is our loving inter-dependence, not our independence, which sustains our dignity. In addition, we must not reduce worthiness to live to a matter of the ability to function according to some personally acceptable standard of performance. We must address these and the other shaky foundations for the judicial and legislative actions which are taking us down a path to nowhere. That will take time, and a persistent effort to raise and resolve these deeper issues, with clarity and charity. Life, however, is a marathon, not a sprint; our enterprise is begun and, founded upon both reason and faith, it will succeed, in due time. Meanwhile, we need to take immediate steps. First, we need to make available for all Canadians (not just 30% of us) real medical assistance in dying: palliative care, where people who are dying are surrounded with love, and where any pain they experience is countered with the most advanced medical care available. ...Continued on page 5 NEWMAN BULLETIN

...Continued from page 4 - Statement by Cardinal Collins on passing of Euthanasia Bill C-14 Second, we need to speak forthrightly. When people feel compelled to use language in a way that does not reveal what is actually happening, but instead conceals it, it is a sign that something is radically wrong (and they know it). The now officially accepted terminology, such as “Medical Assistance in Dying” does not describe medical assistance in dying; it describes killing. Let us say what we mean, and mean what we say. Finally, we need to assure that those individuals who have dedicated their lives to healing will not be pressured into either directly causing the death of their patients, or into arranging for this to happen. Similarly, we must assure that those health care institutions which are havens of hope, in a tradition whose noble roots long predate Confederation, will in no way be forced to violate their conscience (known as their “mission”). “Lord, teach us the shortness of life, that we may gain wisdom of heart.” - Psalm 90:12 Thomas Cardinal Collins Archbishop of Toronto NEWMAN BULLETIN

EDITOR’S PAGE Dear Newmanites, Even though summers are quiet here, the Newman Centre was buzzing with activity these past few weeks as the Totus Tuus missionaries from the Office of Catholic Youth prepared to take on their missions. These young leaders are students and seminarians who undertake an intensive training and spend their summer sharing their faith with children and youth in various parishes. Please keep them in your prayers. Newman’s annual Mission Trip to Jamaica in May was a tremendous success. Stay tuned for a few write-ups from some of the 29 missionaries on our blog (http://www.newmantoronto.com/homepage/blog). Both of our Chaplaincy staff are away in July to take part in Steubenville and in World Youth Day! They will be back in August. Lastly, Newman is now open for Mass 7 days a week! As Pope Paul VI said, “The Mass is the most perfect form of prayer!” Blessings, Maria.

HUMOUR The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples. Ways to Be Merciful During the Year of Mercy - Practicing mercy in our lives actually does take practice! 1) Take time in prayer to contemplate the good qualities of someone who is difficult for you. Do the same for each member of your family. 2) Send a card, flowers, gift or note to someone on the six-month anniversary of his or her loved one’s death. By then, most people have stopped recognizing their grief. 3) Offer to babysit for a busy mom to go out and have a couple of hours to herself. (Courtesy: aleteia.org)

A Request for Liturgical Volunteers Thank you to everyone who has volunteered. We are in need of more volunteers. We request you to consider serving at Mass. For those interested in volunteering, please contact the coordinators found on page 11 of the bulletin.

NEWMAN HISTORY CORNER - Courtesy of Peter Skrepichuk

It has long been believed that the stained glass windows in the chancel came from the first Newman chapel on St. Joseph’s St. that was built in 1914. However based on research conducted last year we now know that all of the older windows in the current chapel date from 1931-32 and were newly made in Germany. The stained glass windows from the old chapel did survive and can now be seen in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Sts. Cyril and Methodius RC Church in Mississauga. Below is the newspaper article reporting on the installation of these Memorial windows in 1817. It is well that this story is remembered now as the three men honoured in these windows gave their life during fighting at the Somme in 1916 and we are currently marking the 100th anniversary of that WWI battle this year. “An impressive memorial service, which was very largely attended, was held in Newman Hall chapel on Sunday afternoon in honour of the young men of Newman Hall who have made the supreme sacrifice during the present war. To three of the first young men who were killed – Vincent Defoe, Augustus Defoe, and Paul McLaughlin – a stained glass window has been erected.” (The Catholic Register and Canadian Extension, Thursday, November 15, 1917, p.20) NEWMAN BULLETIN

Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman “Let us seek the grace of a cheerful heart, an even temper, sweetness, gentleness, and brightness of mind, as walking in His light, and by His grace. Let us pray Him to give us the spirit of ever-abundant, ever-springing love, which overpowers and sweeps away the vexations of life by its own richness and strength, and which above all things unites us to Him who is the fountain and the centre of all mercy, loving kindness, and joy.” (Parochial and Plain Sermons, Volume 8, Sermon 17)

FAMILY OF FAITH CAMPAIGN….ONE YEAR LATER As many of you remember, last year we completed our active fundraising for our parish’s Family of Faith campaign. Our participation in this important program not only greatly helps our parish, it helps establish funds for the Archdiocese of Toronto to fund a number of initiatives outlined in the Pastoral Plan. The priorities include:      

Providing financial support to parishes to help ensure growth and sustainability; Supporting Catholic education through parish and campus based ministry to keep our youth engaged in an active life of faith; Investing in resources that will help all of our clergy grow and be the pastoral leaders we all rely on them to be; Ensuring there is a strong Catholic voice in an increasingly secular world; Restoring and enhancing the beauty of St. Michael’s Cathedral as the mother church of all Catholics in the archdiocese; Establishing a new capital fund to provide financing to new churches and to support those parish communities that may be struggling with significant building issues.

Our parish campaign experienced tremendous success. In total, parishioners pledged $260,398.20. The outpouring of generosity and sacrifice by our parish families was astounding and inspiring. On behalf of the Archdiocese of Toronto, I would like to give my genuine and heartfelt thanks to all of the families and individuals that helped make the Family of Faith campaign a success at the Newman Centre. A campaign such as this one does not simply end when all the pledges are collected. Now is the time when we start to see the wonderful effects of our effort. The first payment distribution of our parish Family of Faith share was completed on June 3, 2016. The parish share is $18,201.03 and as per policy, 50% of this amount ($9,100.52) was credited to Family of Faith parish investment account and the other 50% was applied to the chancery loan for the Chapel Roof Replacement Project in 2014. Please remember the spirit of the campaign and the prayerful consideration that compelled so many of us to make a sacrificial gift to secure a future for our Church. As always, you can stay up to date on campaign progress by visiting our webpage at ourFamilyofFaith.ca - Fr. Chris.

THANK YOU FROM CARDINAL COLLINS Dear Parishioners of Newman Centre Catholic Mission, I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous support of the Family of Faith campaign. The incredible response to the appeal should inspire us in our mission to love God and to show that love by serving others. In my travels throughout our diverse faith community, I am deeply moved by the sacrifice and generosity of parishioners, faithful stewards of all that has been entrusted to them, sharing in abundance time and again. To all those who have supported this campaign, I am deeply grateful. May we continue to look for opportunities to partner together in sharing the joy of our faith with one another. Be assured of my prayers for your community, now and always. Sincerely in Christ, Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto (The complete letter from Cardinal Collins has been posted on the Newman bulletin board by our entrance) NEWMAN BULLETIN

NEW EVANGELIZATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION - By Erin Kinsella From May 23-25, I participated in a conference at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA along with more than 250 others who work in university settings. It was entitled “The New Evangelization in Higher Education”, and brought together excellent keynote presenters and workshop speakers to help unpack Pope Francis’ vision of the New Evangelization as it applies to young adults in post-secondary institutions. From the beginning of the conference, I was extremely impressed by the incredible Benedictine hospitality offered by St. Vincent. If you ever venture down near Pittsburgh, I highly recommend a stop in Latrobe to see the beautiful Basilica and grounds that we got to enjoy. If you’re a Steelers fan (which I’m really not…I’m more of a hockey girl), St. Vincent has the added bonus of being their spring training site. But I digress. If you’ve ever heard of such Catholic celebrities as Cardinal Donald Wuerl (Archbishop of Washington), Dr. Carolyn Woo (President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services) and Bishop Robert Barron (Auxiliary Bishop of LA and Founder of Word on Fire), then you know how great a conference this must have been! Cardinal Wuerl spoke eloquently of what it means to evangelize in the present day, and suggested that those becoming missionary disciples of Christ must be formed in human anthropology, Christology, Ecclesiology and Soteriology. In other words, we need to know and communicate the Kerygma: we were created to be in relationship with God, but that relationship was broken through sin and Christ came to take our sin upon Himself and restore that relationship. God now gives us free will to receive this gift of salvation. Finally, Cardinal Wuerl suggested that all those engaged in the New Evangelization (otherwise known as every baptized Christian) should exhibit 4 characteristics: boldness, a sense of urgency, connectedness to the Church, and JOY! The second day of the conference brought workshops on missionary discipleship, financial development, curriculum development, faith and science, and more. It also contained keynotes from Dr. Carolyn Woo, who described the many challenges this generation of university students face and the role we play in building supportive communities, and Bishop Barron. Because Maria won’t let me write a 6000 word blog, I’ll focus on a few points from Bishop Barron’s presentation, although I have to say that Dr. Woo was also incredibly inspiring; her own story speaks to the potential that university chaplaincies have in forming and supporting those who will become influential leaders in the Church and the world. Bishop Barron focused on 5 areas that he has found are highly misunderstood among millennials as discovered through the comments posted on his much-viewed Youtube videos (if you haven’t watched any, DO IT.). They are: a deep misunderstanding of the nature of God, a deep misunderstanding of the Bible, a deep misunderstanding of the relationship between faith and science, a deep misunderstanding of the relationship between religion and violence, and a deep misunderstanding of human sexuality. If you want to see a video of him that contains most of these points, check out https://goo.gl/6FFVya. Long, but definitely worth it. My main take away from the conference? It wasn’t necessarily a best practice or a new connection, although those were part of it. It was a deep sense that the mission of the Church is to walk with people as they encounter Christ and come to know how deeply they are loved, and an incredulity that somehow I get to be a part of this in my role at Newman.
