A LETTER FROM YOUR PASTOR Dear Newmanites, “Among the immense fields of apostolate and action for which the Church is responsible, university culture is one of the most promising, but also one of the most difficult. This particular milieu has so great an influence on the social and cultural life of nations, and on it depends to a great extent the future of the Church and that of society. Within it the Church maintains an apostolic presence and action at both the institutional and the personal levels, with the specific cooperation of priests and lay people, administrative staff, teachers and students.” The above quote is from a 1994 document of the Holy See on The Presence of the Church
in the University and in University Culture. Although the document is a bit dated, its relevance withstands nonetheless. It describes our task at hand as a university parish and chaplaincy – what we ought to be for the University of Toronto, our beloved country, and the universal Catholic Church. Amongst the wide variety of programs and events offered at the Newman Centre, it’s worth highlighting Brother Consolmagno SJ (American research astronomer and Director of the Vatican Observatory) and his lecture in February at the Newman Centre as well as Cardinal Turkson (President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace) and his presentation in March at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Both speakers are world-renowned and their presence amongst us enabled us to foster relevant and intelligent conversations with diverse fields of knowledge. I’m sure that our patron Blessed John Henry Newman, a strong advocate for the integration of faith and intellect, as well as Pope Francis, with his earnest desire to transform the Church into a community of joyful missionary disciples, will be very pleased by our ministry! As Christians, we certainly have a lot to offer and a lot to learn! Thus it is our intention to continue on this trajectory as we strive towards our new vision and mission (see page 3) If you missed these events, you may access the recordings for free at our website www.newmantoronto.com As you may imagine, these kinds of events require a lot of work behind the scenes. I would like to express my gratitude to the dedicated staff here at the Newman Centre, the board of directors and members of the Newman Foundation, our strategic partnerships with the Archdiocese of Toronto and the University of St. Michael’s College, all donors, supporters and participants. Last but not the least, I would like to invite you to the Annual General Meeting of the Newman Foundation to be held on Thursday, April 21st (see page 4). This evening will be a celebration of the wonderful work that the Foundation enabled us to do and a unique opportunity to learn how your gift to the Foundation is being invested in successful ministry. God bless, Fr. Chris Need a filming location? Organizing a party or anniversary? Rent the Newman Centre, a beautiful 125-year old heritage property for your event. From Pope Francis “In the end, our strength as a community, on every level of life and social organization, lies not so much in our learning and personal ability, but in the compassion we show for one another, in the care that we exercise especially for those who cannot care for themselves.” (Address to participants in the 2016 Harvard World Model United Nations, March 17, 2016)

EDITOR’S PAGE Dear Newmanites, We hope you’ve all had a wonderful Easter. Did you miss Cardinal Collins’ lecture at Newman last month? He spoke about Cardinal Newman as Mentor and was such an animated speaker, that he had the audience laughing after every story about Cardinal Newman. Check out his video here: http://bit.ly/CardinalColinslecture We are a few weeks away from our Mission Trip to Jamaica. Erin Kinsella, our Associate Director of Campus Outreach, will accompany 24 enthusiastic missionaries and they are saving their check-in luggage for much-needed donations for the orphanage they will be serving. Please see page 7 for what they require the most and thank you for your generosity. For those who can’t go that far during the Year of Mercy, please consider joining Sonal Castelino, our Associate Director of Formation and Programs on Sunday, April 24th at noon to prepare and serve warm beverages to the underprivileged at 6 St. Joseph Street’s Sunday Drop-In Café. See page 7 for further details. Lastly, we look forward to welcoming you at our Annual General Meeting on April 21st, where you’ll hear about all the great work happening at the Newman Centre and how thankful we are for your wonderful support. Blessings, Maria.

HUMOUR - Courtesy of Kaylee Moynihan, Student Campus Minister Q: What kind of a man was Boaz before he got married? A: Ruth-less.

Q: What do you call dinosaurs at a playground? A: Jurassic Park.

Ways to Be Merciful During the Year of Mercy - Practicing mercy in our lives actually does take practice! 1) Do something kind and helpful for someone who you don’t get along with, or who has wronged you. 2) Be mindful of your behavior online. Is that post designed to improve your image … and leave others feeling bad? Are you hammering people in order to serve your anger and humiliate others? 3) Have masses said for the living: friends and family members, even strangers you read/hear about, who are having a hard time.

A Request for Liturgical Volunteers Thank you to everyone who has volunteered. We are in need of more volunteers. We request you to consider serving at Mass. For those interested in volunteering, please contact the coordinators found on page 12 of the bulletin.

Framed Stations of the Cross : Among the gifts given to the newly completed chapel were the wood framed Stations of the Cross, which were originally placed along both the East and West walls of the Chapel. Fr. McNab, C.S.P., mentions them in The Torch: “On Sunday, October 30, at 4 p.m., we will have the Blessing of the Stations of the Cross. These beautiful stations are the gift of his Grace Archbishop McNeil…” (Archives of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto (ARCAT), Newman Centre Fonds, Publications, The Torch October 1927, p4) Upcoming Special collections: Chapel Building and Maintenance Fund (April 24th) Pope’s Pastoral Works (May 1st) ShareLife Campaign 2016: The ShareLife campaign provides for the needs of our social service agencies, helps our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world, and supports the education of our clergy. Last year alone, ShareLife provided over 381,000 essential services to over 114,000 people. Our parish goal for the 2016 ShareLife campaign is $8,000 and so far we have raised $4,309. Thank you for your generosity. On Sunday, April 10th after both the 11 am and 7 pm masses we will be having our Annual Bake Sale, sponsored by the Newman Young Adults Ministry (NYAM). All proceeds will go towards the 2016 ShareLife campaign and every dollar donated will be matched by Scotiabank. Called to Teach: Are you presently in teachers college? Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman on Conscience “The rule and measure of duty is not utility, nor expedience, nor the happiness of the greatest number, nor State convenience, nor fitness, order, and the pulchrum [beautiful]. Conscience is not a long-sighted selfishness, nor a desire to be consistent with oneself; but it is a messenger from Him, who, both in nature and in grace, speaks to us behind a veil, and teaches and rules us by His representatives.” (A Letter Addressed to the Duke of Norfolk)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CHALLENGES 

Spiritual Statistics – Weddings (16), Baptisms (21), First Communion (2), Confirmation (6), New Catholics through the RCIA program (3)

Sacrament of Reconciliation offered weekdays before Mass, weekly at Pray and Play, and on Sundays during Lent and Advent before Mass.

Added full-time Communications Coordinator, Maria Da Silva, to Newman staff as a response to growth in the chaplaincy programs. Maria has begun to lead promotion and engagement within and outside the community and assists with fundraising for the Newman Foundation.

Continued commitment of Archdiocese to growing the Newman Foundation’s fundraising capacity with the assistance of Samantha Koon, a part-time Development Officer, at this time funded by the Archdiocese. The Foundation’s grant contribution to the Centre increased by approximately $57,000 from 2014 to 2015.

Restored and stabilized the sagging and cracked decorative ceiling in the Cardinal Newman Room, a significant heritage feature in the Centre under the Ontario Heritage Trust Easement. Related to this work was removing the flooring and replacing with new hardwood floors in four offices above on the 2nd floor. The Archdiocese of Toronto funded this work costing approximately $150,000.

Interior finishes in the church are in need of improvement – carpeting, paint, etc. Monthly Church Maintenance Fund resumed in October 2015 to begin raising funds.

New automatic lawn sprinkler system installed on Newman grounds during summer 2015.

Newman’s Strategic Planning Committee developed and articulated new vision and mission statements, values, and pastoral directions by incorporating directions and standards from the Archdiocese of Toronto’s Pastoral Plan, the Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry guidelines and results from both the Nov. 2014 questionnaire and the Oct. 4/15 community meeting on the needs and characteristics of the Newman community.

Reduced street parking for Sunday Mass due to new bike lane tracks on Hoskin/Harbord – greater need to rely on Rotman underground parking, costing Newman $3 per vehicle.

The expenses associated with running the Newman Centre are significant and we work very hard to contain expenses and to generate revenue. While the Archdiocese has continued their support, your contributions are vital to our ongoing operations. Please consider our needs when budgeting for your contribution this year. Also, remember our community if you are away for any number of Sundays – pre-authorized or monthly credit card giving is a helpful way to do this (contact [email protected]). We really do depend upon and appreciate your support. My thanks for the diligence and input of the Finance Council, consisting of: John Sidle, Patrick Douglas, Joseph Colussi, John Finley, Nick Pawliwec and Jessel Subero. A member of our Finance Council will be available on Sunday, April 10 after the Masses to respond to any questions you may have. If you have any other questions or comments about the above report, please email them to Patrick Douglas at [email protected].

STUDENT CAMPUS MINISTER REFLECTIONS A word of thanks from Erin Kinsella, Associate Director of Campus Outreach on behalf of the Newman Centre: It has been such a joy getting to know each of you, and sharing in the amazing community life you’ve all invested so deeply in. Although you all have unique gifts, it’s incredible to see how you’ve put those individual gifts towards our common goal: serving the Lord and growing more profoundly in love of Him and others. For those who are moving on with other studies or ministries, we are so grateful for the generosity you showed this year. For those who are returning, we can’t wait to have you back. We wish all of you well in the future! Lisa Caballero - My second year living at the Newman Centre as an SCM was amazing. This year I grew in faithfulness to prayer. The best part of this experience was the community I lived with because each member showed me what it means to serve generously and love selflessly. I’m very thankful. Garrett Graham - I'm truly grateful to the Lord for all that I've received through the experience of being an SCM. Living in a community was a blessing and gave many daily opportunities to learn how to empty myself in love for another. It was also really great helping out in various ministries that the Newman Centre provides. Encountering so many Catholic students who are truly passionate and zealous about their faith has really filled me with much hope for the future of the Church! Jennifer Ip - Living at Newman gave me the community and spiritual support I needed for my studies.

Joe Loreto - Newman was a great first community living experience for me. Our team was fantastic, and I enjoyed building such strong relationships with both my fellow residents and members of the Newman community at large. This is such a meaningful place, and I feel so lucky to have been a part of it for the past year! Anne Mienkowski - Being an SCM was one of the best years of my life. I grew in my relationship with Christ and I learned to put God first. I was challenged to evangelize and I acquired the tools to be a witness in the faith to all those I encounter. The friendships I made I hope to keep for a lifetime. God Bless Kaylee Moynihan - I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to spend the year with amazing and faithful people. They have revealed the love of Christ to me countless times. The Newman Centre has become my home over the past two years and I will miss all of you during the summer, but hopefully I will see you all again soon! Sarah Neitz - My favorite part of being an student campus minister has been growing in community with parishioners, students, and other SCMs. The Newman Centre welcomed me with such gusto, especially as a newcomer to Toronto! It is an honor to love and serve here. Chanelle Robinson - Living at Newman has allowed me to grow in many ways. I am very grateful for the opportunity to grow in friendship with other young Catholics and to serve the greater Toronto community. I will truly cherish the time that I spent here, and I thank God for his mercy and grace. Arnel Vicente - Awesome. Beautiful. Creative. Dynamic. Enriching. Fun. Grateful. Holiness. Insightful. Joyful. Kindred. Loving. Memorable. Newman. Opportunity. Pastoral. Quirky. Ridiculous. Sanctity. Trust. Understanding. Victorious. Welcoming. Xenial. Yes. Zealous. Fr. Chris, Fr.
