Would you like to be an inspiration to others? This story will show you how. Here is an amazing story of two students, Natalie Doummar and Virginia Mervar, who grew up in non-practicing Catholic families, but found their way to the Newman Centre upon entering university in 2013. Today, they have risen as shining examples of Christ’s witnesses to love and faith, and they now live in service not only among their peers, but also within their families. “This is my fourth year at Newman and I have found friendship, inspiration and courage that have impacted my faith journey. Today, I say the Rosary with my mother at home, something we never did before I discovered the Newman community.” Virginia Mervar

Strengthened by Newman Centre’s many leadership formation programs and by what Natalie calls “God coincidences”, both students chose to be missionaries during their summer holidays serving in poor orphanages in South America and schools in Africa. And even though both are students in the Concurrent Teacher Education Program for Religious Studies at the University of St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto, they still make the time to involve themselves deeply in evangelization, Catholic leadership and volunteer formation. Natalie and Virginia are our future Catholic leaders - the skills they have gained at Newman Centre will directly increase their effectiveness as Disciples of Christ throughout their lives.

In fact, I too am a beneficiary of Newman Centre’s leadership formation. As a former University of Toronto student who had found a spiritual home here, it is Divine Providence that I was appointed as the new Pastor of Newman Centre this summer. During those years of study, daily Mass, Adoration and Confession provided me with a spiritual oasis away from the many hours spent in the hospital lab while I completed my MSc and PhD in Medical Science and Neuroscience. With particular fondness I remember participating in Newman’s Lay Ministers to the Sick program (which still runs today) where I was blessed to be able to pray with and minister to people at Princess Margaret Hospital who were very ill. These moments of intense prayer, intellectual formation and encouragement from Newman’s former pastors, Fr. Tom Rosica and Fr. Pat O’Dea, worked together to help me respond to my vocation to the priesthood. I am now excited to give back to a community that has given me so much. It saddens me that a large majority of our Catholic youth stop practicing their faith during their university years.
With your help, we can reverse this trend... At Newman Centre, we provide our university students with both spiritual and intellectual support. For 2016, the Newman Foundation needs to raise $110,000 to cover the costs of the Newman Campus Ministry Programs.
