CEO’s Report Welcome to the last KidsCan Newsletter for the year. With Christmas almost upon us I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on what KidsCan has achieved this year for New Zealand children who are experiencing extreme hardship. With the support of our key sponsors, individual supporters, Ministry of Social Development, Trusts and Foundations and wonderful media partners we have been able to provide a hand up for children in 449 schools across the country. We have distributed more than 98,000 items of clothing, over 91,000 health and hygiene items and we are now providing food at school for 15,056 children a week. We also launched our programme to tackle head lice in October and I am pleased to report the war on the creepy critters is going well. Whilst I am proud that we have been able to support so many children, I have mixed feelings and a sense of sadness that the need has become so great in our country when in my belief child poverty should not exist here. It is heartening however to see that public opinion and 'parent blaming' is softening, with more people calling for change and understanding that most families who are struggling simply do not have enough income to meet the basic costs of living and are not wasting their money.

KidsCan CEO and Founder, Julie Chapman.

At the coal face we have seen a significant increase in the need for food, from 15% of a school roll (on average) to 20%. Early intervention to reduce poverty related illnesses like skin infections and scabies will also be a key focus for the KidsCan team in 2015. It is on this note that I would like to make special mention of the amazing group of people I work with. To the KidsCan team who are 100% committed to the health and wellbeing of our children, it is a joy to come into the office each day and work with you. To our board members Bill Birnie, Glenda Hughes, John Kensington and Nigel Hampton my sincere thanks for the ongoing contribution you make to KidsCan at not just a governance level but often on a daily basis. In closing I would like to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy the holidays with your family and friends. We look forward to working with you in 2015. COMMUNITY PIECES

RISE UP Academy

By Sete Selupe

stated, “I really loved learning about the LOVE LANGUAGES. Since that session we have learnt to chop back on our commitments and make time for our kids because their love languages are Quality Time.”- Bruce As well as a strong community engagement strategy, the school also has a phenomenal Rise UP Inquiry Learning model which delivers a Hearts & Minds approach to the New Zealand Curriculum.

On February 7th 2014, The Rise UP Trust opened the very first Primary Partnership School, Rise UP Academy in Mangere East, South Auckland. The vision for the school is to develop SHARP minds, STRONG bodies and GOOD hearts amongst our Pacific Ma-ori learners. The difference about this school is they say ‘When you enrol your child, we enrol your whanau’. The school has 50 students from years 1-6 and aims to increase the roll and year levels over the next five years. There is a very distinctive village/community flavour to the school, which asks parents to attend parent workshops and volunteer in the school day-to-day activities. One of the dads on completion of the six week Hearts & Minds Parenting programme

Constellation Brands A constellation is a group of stars, and they are exactly what I saw when I visited the KidsCan office on Monday the 22nd of September. Constellation Brands New Zealand, met with KidsCan, a charity whose sole objective is to provide food, clothing and basic healthcare to low decile schools in New Zealand. The reason for their meeting was to celebrate the donation of $30,000 from Constellation Brands to the Orchards in Schools programme that is being implemented by KidsCan. Constellation Brands New Zealand are a holding company for a number of great New Zealand wines including those of Nobilo, Selaks, and Kim Crawford. They made the decision to donate to the KidsCan Orchards in Schools programme. This fantastic programme has been created so that deprived children in NZ schools can have a better chance at a healthy diet that will fulfill their basic nutritional needs. Often children come to school hungry and research shows that this affects their ability to learn, but with the amazing help of donations from people such as Constellation Brands. The programme will be able to improve the lives of many children so that they can continue to thrive at school, without having to worry about their stomach being empty. The important process of planting and nurturing trees has seemed to become lost throughout generations, so not only is this a wonderful way for children to have fresh fruit in their diet, it is also a brilliant way for Kiwi kids to learn the skills of growing and nurturing their own trees that will benefit

The Rise UP Trust relies on philanthropic grants to fund the Parenting programmes and the Afterschool programme which runs from 3-5pm Monday to Thursday. All the students get the opportunity to participate in quality performing arts, sports and nutrition programmes. This has seen a huge increase in children’s confidence levels which has overflowed into their classroom learning. The 2014 year has seen the development of a new breed of Pacific Ma-ori learners that are well placed to reach their student achievement targets. One of the latest projects sees the Year 4-6 classroom developing their own edible play garden as the school doesn’t currently have a playground. Students have worked through the planning, design and implementation stages with local experts and look forward to completing their edible play garden. Sita Selupe is the CEO of Rise Up Academy and the 2014 Next Woman of the Year.

By Nina Pinkerton-Bennet, Albany Senior High School them, and other children for many years to come. The programme consists of three aspects, the first of which is helping to bring fruit into schools and provide healthy snacks for children of families who cannot necessarily afford this. The second step sees that the children witness trees growing from seedlings through to mature trees. The last aspect of the Orchards in Schools programme is to have community involvement throughout the schools. An overwhelming 1 in 4 NZ children live in poverty, but with the help of generous people donating to KidsCan, the future generations of New Zealand stand a greater chance at a happy, healthy and educated life. A huge thank you to both KidsCan and Constellation Brands NZ with their continued efforts to better the lives of New Zealand children.

The Claus were out for a good cause! It was a beautiful sunny day throughout New Zealand for the annual KidsCan Santa Run, and what a great success it was! This year’s event expanded into 17 locations throughout New Zealand, including the introduction of Invercargill and Wanaka. People of all ages were dressed in full Santa regalia for the 2-3km run/walk which benefits New Zealand children living in poverty. Shaun Collins from Lactic Turkey Events said "It was a great night which appeared to be enjoyed by all. It's a great fun

event at this time of year where people get to enjoy the feeling of participating in a nationwide event but also raising money for a NZ charity. Not to mention now participants have a costume for their Christmas parties!" Sincere thanks to our great sponsors: Meridian Energy, Trillian Trust, The Athletes Foot, Mizuno, More FM, Charlie's, Planet Fun and Lactic Turkey Events. Festive family

Meridian CEO challenge sets Wellington alight A record 780 Wellingtonians laced up their running shoes to raise money for KidsCan at the annual Santa Run in December. Donning their Santa suits and braving the wind, they all met at Frank Kitts Park. Following a warm up and welcome from KidsCan CEO Julie Chapman, the men, women and children, some fast and some not so fast, ran or walked the 2km Santa Run route along the waterfront to Waitangi Park and back. In the lead up to the event, KidsCan’s principal partner Meridian Energy’s Chief Executive Mark Binns, challenged his Wellington business colleagues to put on a Santa suit and take him on. His challenge was accepted with over 80 Meridian entrants,

and similar numbers from other businesses including Trade Me, Chorus, Wellington Free Ambulance and NZ Post to name just a few. Mark also pledged to pay $10 for every Meridian entrant who beat him on the day. Mark set a pretty steady pace, possibly slower than he would normally run! “I pounded the pavement but I still got beaten by many of my Meridian team!” Mark donated $10 for every Meridian entrant, that’s a whopping $800 to KidsCan. “It's a great event and it was fantastic to see so many entrants,” says Mark. A big thanks to those who took part. Let’s go for an even bigger event next year!

KidsCan Health for Kids Programme Update

It’s been a busy time and the year has just about come to an end, but we have some really exciting news! The Head Lice clinics are up and running in 17 schools in Hawke's Bay. Since the programme started in November, over 300 children have been screened and 41% of the children had infestations and needed treatment. The next areas to have Head Lice clinics in their schools will be Wellington, Kaitaia and Christchurch. The great thing about the Head Lice programme is that children are being treated at school and it is helping reduce the amount of head lice in schools. KidsCan want to take away the stigma of having head lice as well as educate children and families around treatment and prevention. For schools that are not part of the Head Lice programme, they can still access nit combs and treatment to administer themselves through www.kidscan.org.nz. KidsCan are also offering many high needs schools the opportunity to install a hand sanitiser system into their school. There is a lot of evidence to support the use of sanitiser supporting the reduction of children absent from schools, especially in the winter months. Working in partnership with Hawke's Bay District Health Board and the Ministry of Social Development, who have provided the funding for the Head Lice programme, KidsCan are piloting skin programmes in seven high needs schools in Hawke's Bay.

Initially the programme will focus on key health messages around effective hand washing, keeping finger nails short and cleaning and covering skin sores. Next year the programme will extend to an identification and treatment pathway between KidsCan Health Champions (who will be fully trained by professionals) and school nurses, utilising a specifically developed telemedicine app, which takes high quality photography and enables a link between the parties involved. This programme will be extended to other schools around the country. These clinics will initially focus on skin conditions and then later address wider health concerns. It’s all go on the health front at KidsCan. Watch this space for more exciting health programme updates! Have a great Christmas and relaxing holiday break with your friends and families. Take care, Jenny Hugtenburg Programme Manager Health for Kids

Wrapping up the year for 2014 Making a tangible difference for children in poverty is what KidsCan is all about and our areas of focus are food, clothing and health. Thanks to your donations and support, our programmes have made a huge difference this year and we have managed to help more Kiwi kids than ever before. This year the children in the schools we support have benefited from the following…

HEALTH FOR KIDS The Health for Kids programme continues to be a successful initiative for 2014. We now provide head lice treatment, lice combs, hand sanitiser, dental kits and tissues to our partner schools. “Some of our families simply could not afford the treatments to eradicate head lice, which meant that the head lice cycle was not being broken. With KidsCan’s assistance, we now feel that we have a much better chance to manage the head lice situation at school,” Lil Ruffell, Principal, Whangarei Heads School.

FOOD FOR KIDS In 2014 the Food for Kids programme has reached more kids than ever before, providing targeted and nutritional food such as baked beans, fruit pottles, bread and yoghurt to help Kiwi kids who experience food insecurity.

“The muesli bars, raisins, and pottles of fruit add a special addition to the sandwiches we distribute for children who continue to come to school (many daily) with no suitable lunch. Concentration spans after the lunch break are greatly improved if the children have had a nourishing lunch,” Josie Soppit, Principal's Secretary, Allandale School.

RAINCOATS FOR KIDS 367 schools are now a part of our Raincoats for Kids programme, helping to keep the kids warm and dry through the cold and wet winter months. Our milestone of 100,000 raincoats was reached this year, and was celebrated at Lincoln Heights School, with a special guest appearance from the Vodafone Warriors, Miriama Smith as well as the Rt Hon John Key. “Without the help from KidsCan we would have many children arriving at

school cold, wet and hungry which is not a good way to start school. As we are a decile one school in Taranaki, the jackets are a great way to keep our children warm throughout the cold winter months,” Lyn Robinson, School Secretary, Avon School.

SHOES FOR KIDS In 2014 KidsCan has provided free quality footwear and socks to help keep little feet safe and warm, as many children arrive at school without footwear or with shoes that are in bad condition. “Providing raincoats, shoes and food, KidsCan effectively takes away three of the main barriers to student attendance at school. Coats and shoes are needed in Auckland’s wet climate for our children to be able to walk to school,” Maria Heron, Principal, Mangere Central School.

FUNDRAISER FOR KIDSCAN

Jimi Dodge-Vermeulen Six year old Jimi raised over $820 for KidsCan from his first ever haircut! How did you find out about KidsCan? My mum told me about it, I did not know there were kids who can't always have breakfast or shoes. Why did you support KidsCan? I am very lucky but it is sad that other kids are not, I want them to have the same as me. How did you feel supporting KidsCan? It feels good. What do you do when you’re not helping KidsCan? I play with my Lego and my friends, I go to school. Do you have a message to other supporters, donors or volunteers? When you give to other people it feels really good.

LONG TIME "IN OUR OWN BACKYARD" SUPPORTER

Peta Pickering How did you first get involved with KidsCan? We first got involved with the organisation due to media participation i.e. Herald, TV and pamphlet drops. What was your first impression of KidsCan? We just thought it was such a great thing that those children through no fault of their own were able to start their day with food, not only nourishing but generating a family like atmosphere and the children are all on one level of sharing. How long have you been a supporter? We have been involved for around three years. Why have you remained a supporter? We have remained a supporter as we think it is important that children can be given the chance to participate in school activities and not have the feeling of being hungry. What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about child poverty in New Zealand? For a long time now, we as a country like to give to underprivileged people overseas when we have poverty in our own “backyard” but somehow it is ignored. What do you do in your spare time? Spare time! Ha! Ha! Husband!! Garden!! And sometimes TRY to play a little golf, gym, and having been a nurse in my working life, I'm still involved with many like activities. What would you tell someone who is thinking about donating to KidsCan? If they have their own children/grandchildren how could they not understand the issues with hungry children around them, and of course like their own, they are the future. Do you have a message to other supporters, donors, or volunteers? Yes, just realise such a small amount given each month could have a long lasting effect for the underprivileged.

St Patrick’s school visit to Manapouri A sense of excitement rippled through the St Patrick’s school students as they boarded a boat for the 45 minute journey to Manapouri Power Station in November. Twelve of the KidsCan partner school’s 14 students took part came on the trip hosted by KidsCan principal partner Meridian Energy, who own and operate the power station. The misty, drizzly weather provided an awesome backdrop for the first sight of the station. Getting off the boat at the wharf, they were greeted by Manapouri Station Manager, John Twidle. He took the children on a tour of the hydro station’s engine room and explained how the station’s turbines generate electricity from water. Then it was time to hop on a bus for the ride to Deep Cove, where many tourist

boats and recreational boaties anchor, to see the start of the Manapouri Tailrace Tunnel, which takes water from Doubtful Sound to the power station where it’s put through the turbines to generate electricity. Meridian External Relations General Manager, Guy Waipara, says the children were a delight to host. “For a number of them this was their first boat trip, so they were really excited from the start. They asked great questions about how we make electricity from water and how the station was built. It was a real treat for us to have the chance to share a very special part of New Zealand with a special group of kids. It brought home to us the importance of the work that KidsCan does across the country.”
