News from SDU CENTRE FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING Learning Analytics (LA) We want to provide education at SDU that is flexible, activating and personally targeted for students. Blended learning enables such an education. When teaching goes online, it generates large amounts of valuable data about students’ behaviour. In recent years, the utilisation of these data has aroused considerable interest. Learning Analytics is now the designation for the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs (Cloug, D., 2015). LA is characterised by making use of machine-readable data and ‘Big data’techniques (Ferguson, R., 2012). The preliminary research and practice within the LA-field is still finding its footing. In the JISC’s report Learning Analytics in Higher Education from 2016 the following 3 examples of the use of LA in university contexts are highlighted: 1. Enhancing the quality of teaching through datainformed teaching. Read about Assistant Professor Anne-Mette Nortvig’s experiences with the use of LA as a starting point for reflection on didactic design in blended learning courses in a Master’s course at AAU. 2. Reducing drop-out and retention. Students in risk of drop-out are spotted by early actions through LA, and predictions for particular groups of students are generated on the basis of previous years’ digital foot prints. Read how Purdue University in the US has used a traffic signal system since 2007 to provide information and offer help to students who are at risk of dropping out of their studies. 3. Adaptive and personal learning environments is one field that is highly topical again, since the adaptive learning technologies’ use of LA makes them more intelligent and able to adapt and target learningenvi ronments for the students’ needs, often in real time. Read about Open Australia Universities’ PASS, which uses data from different sources to recommend stu dents appropriate learning activities an modules de pending on their current situation. Strategy and ethical guidelines are needed LA has become one of the buzz words where critics are urging restraint. LA and Big data are tools, data and systems containing certain understandings and ways to see the world which we should address critically and reflectively (Ryberg, 2016). Strategies for the use of LA, clear ethical guidelines and the participation of all users are needed in terms of exploitation of LA’s potential (JISCs Code of Practice, 2015).
