Elkhart awarded $1 million INDOT matching grant to improve local roads ELKHART (August 24, 2016) – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) officials announced today that Elkhart has been awarded a $1 million Community Crossings Matching Grant – the maximum amount any municipality can receive. These funds will be used for local road and bridge improvements. “One way the city of Elkhart provides for both public safety and economic development is through transportation infrastructure,” said Mayor Tim Neese. “Grant programs such as this are an opportunity for the city to maximize available resources and serve area residents. City staff worked for several months to present a thorough application to INDOT, and the state has recognized the hard work taking place in Elkhart.” In July, Mayor Neese and the Engineering Department submitted a total of eight projects for consideration, each requiring its own application. The submitted projects were chosen based on road condition, traffic volume, traffic nature and recommendations by the city’s Street Commissioner. The city of Elkhart will use the grant to support the following priority projects: • • • • • • • •

Second St. Corridor County Road Six Corridor Flora Ave. and Bryant St. Corridor Middleton Run and Los Angeles Corridor Edgewater Blvd. Corridor Osolo Rd. and Henke Dr. Corridor East Lake Dr. Hively Ave.

Design on the first two projects has already begun, and the remaining project designs will continue through the fall and winter. The city will work to get at least two of the major road projects started and completed yet this year. A combined total of 53 northeast Indiana cities, towns and counties received more than $20 million from INDOT. Only 11 other communities received the maximum award of $1 million. -30-
