Fire Department Issues Warning about Defective Smoke Alarms Health Canada has recalled 40,000 smoke alarms with a defect that could impair their ability to detect smoke. The affected units are dual sensor, incorporating both ionization and photoelectric technologies. They are manufactured by Kidde, a popular brand. These models have the name Kidde prominently displayed below the “hush” and “test” buttons. The model numbers are PI2010CA and PI9010CA. They contain a yellow cap inside that can block one of the 2 smoke sensors and the company says that can “compromise” the alarm, causing a risk of failure to alert consumers to a fire. The company’s recall notice instructs people to take the alarm down from the ceiling and turn it on its side. If it has the yellow cap, it can be seen through openings on the side. If the cap is there Kidde says it is one of the affected models and must be replaced. Then the company advises that the alarm be reinstalled and an immediate request be made through the company website for a replacement. Acting Deputy Fire Chief Jack Burt urges people to immediately determine whether they have the recalled alarm and to take action. “I’m concerned that many people may not hear about the recall and, if they do, they may not reinstall the alarm they take down. Any person who needs clarification on the details of the recall can contact the fire department at 519-661-4565.” The fire department urges people who may be concerned that they have a defective alarm to go the company’s website to view pictures and read instructions on how to determine if they are affected and how to order a replacement. They can do so by following the link below. https://kidde-smoke-alarm-recallcaen.expertinquiry.com/ In addition to the defective 40,000 alarms in Canada, 452,000 of them are being recalled in the United States.
