SPECIALIZED HOSPITAL FOR CHRONIC CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS TO OPEN INSIDE MERCY MEDICAL CENTER Lease for “Hospital-Within-A-Hospital” Concept to Benefit Fox Valley and Employ Up to 90 Staff When Fully Operational Oshkosh, Wis. – Ministry Health Care and Pennsylvania-based specialty hospital operator Select Medical today announced that a lease agreement was signed to allow the area’s first Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC) hospital to open as soon as April 2014. The 25-bed “hospital-within-a-hospital” will be based on the third floor of Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, Wis. To be called Select Specialty Hospital – Fox Valley, the hospital will be one of more than 100 other similar hospitals owned and operated by Select Medical across the United States. Each LTAC hospital is designed to provide specialized acute care for medically complex patients who need more time than usual to recover. Once fully operational, it is projected to employ up to 90 healthcare professionals. Job creation may not be immediate but extended over a period of time. “Today’s announcement will benefit some of our system’s most vulnerable patients, most of whom will come from an ICU setting but are still in need of intense treatment and care to recover from failing organs or persistent weakness,” said Bill Calhoun, president of Affinity Health System and regional vice president for Ministry Health Care. “We are pleased to welcome a national healthcare organization like Select Medical to Mercy

Medical Center. The closest LTAC hospitals are located in Milwaukee and Madison, so this is great news for the Fox Valley. We look forward to many years of working with Select Medical to help patients and their families in a convenient, close-to-home setting.” “The kinds of patients we specialize in are often on mechanical ventilators, unable to breathe on their own,” said Robert Padalino, regional president for Select Medical. “Others have complex wounds or need extended periods of renal or cardiac care. We are proud to work alongside Ministry Health Care and others in the Fox Valley to offer these services to a very special kind of patient population in northeastern Wisconsin.”

Historically, many area patients in need of LTAC hospitalization were transferred to specialty sites in Milwaukee and Madison, both of which are owned and operated by Select Medical.
