New Vice President, Past President at MMA AUGUSTA – Ellsworth City Manager Michelle Beal recently was appointed Vice President of Maine Municipal Association’s Executive Committee and Nicholas Mavodones, Jr., City Councilor in Portland, was appointed to fill a vacant seat as Past President. Beal, who began her career in municipal government in Ellsworth’s Treasurer’s Office in 1995, assumed the Vice Presidency on Dec. 13, 2013 and will serve in that role through 2014. She will succeed Peter Nielsen, Oakland Town Manager, as President of the municipal organization in 2015. Beal said she is pleased and honored to be chosen as MMA’s Vice President. “MMA is an excellent organization, and its services to the communities in Maine are incomparable,” she said. However, towns and cities face many difficult challenges. “The economy in Maine seems to be improving but municipalities are still struggling with balancing budgets and dealing with reduced revenues,” Beal said. “In these challenging times, it is important that MMA and its leadership remain knowledgeable of legislative decisions and provide a voice for the municipalities that it serves.” Beal has served as full-time City Manager in Ellsworth since 2007. She previously was the city’s Finance Director (2000-2007) and Treasurer (1998-2000). She serves on the Board of Trustees at Maine Coastal Memorial Hospital and previously served on the board of directors at both the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce and Downeast YMCA. She is a past president of the Maine Town, City & County Management Association. Mavodones, who works as Operations Manager at Casco Bay Lines, will serve for one year as Past President of MMA, an organization that he led in 2006. Mavodones’ appointment became necessary because of a local election result in 2013. Mavodones has served on the Portland City Council since 1997. He was appointed Portland’s Mayor four times since 1997 and Finance Chair several times, including currently. He is a former member of the Portland School Committee.

He serves on the boards of the Waterfront Alliance, Portland Fish Exchange and Portland Pier Authority. Mavodones was a ferry boat captain from 1981-1997, when he was promoted to the position of Operations Manager. ### About the Maine Municipal Association: Founded in 1936, the MMA is a voluntary, non-partisan, member-service organization to which 486 municipalities in Maine belong. It has a core belief that local government is a fundamental component of a democratic system of government. MMA’s services include advocacy, education and information, professional legal and personnel advisory services and self-funded group insurance programs.
