ETHICS & GOVERNANCE Understanding the Challenges

John Corrigan MBA, BBus, GradDip Marketing, GradDip Finance, FCPA Ethics and Governance is a core component of the knowledge and skill base of today's professional accountants. As key business decision makers, accountants must be proficient in regulatory regimes, compliance requirements, and governance mechanisms to ensure lawful and effective corporate behaviour and operations. Most candidates believe that Ethics & Governance (E&G) is easier to pass than the other subjects in the CPA Program®. This is not always the case. There are a number of reasons why candidates often find Ethics & Governance more challenging than they first thought: 1. Many approach E&G in the same way as previous theoretical subjects studied at university, rather than as a professional qualifying subject, underestimating the depth and breadth of the understanding required to pass an exam 2. Being a narrative subject E&G requires extensive reading with candidates struggling to maintain focus and relevance, especially those where English is a second language 3. A lack of understanding of the E&G concepts and principles results in candidates struggling to apply practical application to the theoretical knowledge 4. Having limited real world exposure making understanding and mastery of the content difficult 5. Not having access to professional coaches to discuss in depth key learning outcomes 6. Believing that E&G is easy, many candidates only focus on their study in the second half of the semester or cram before the exam. Too little…too late……
