Dear Parent / Carer, As ever we always have a busy end to term with mock examinations, half term assessments, creative and digital activities, rewards trips and Christmas dinner. Mr Griffin visited the Somali community and was impressed with the hospitality (and food) that he enjoyed on Claremont Road. He also met with Grace Church and was thankful to Vinelife for their support of some of our families with hamper donations. We say farewell to Mr McIntosh, Maths, as he follows his dream to take up a PhD in Archaeology. We also say farewell to Miss Keight, English, who has decided to travel the world next year. We wish them well and hope their aspirations are fulfilled. Both teachers have replacements appointed whom we will introduce in our first letter of the New Year. As this will be our last letter of 2014 please enjoy the festivities of the season and we wish you all a very happy New Year.

EMPLOYABILITY TEAM SECTOR DROP: CREATIVE AND DIGITAL MEDIA During the week of 15th–19th December, the Employability Team have arranged activities for students throughout the school, based on one of the fastest growing industry sectors in Manchester – the Creative Digital and Media sector. This is the first sector of three on which we will be focusing throughout the academic year. The overarching aims of these ‘Sector Drops’ are to ensure that students are aware of:
Realistic job opportunities within the Manchester area when they leave school/college. Different pathways into jobs within the specified sector. A transferable skill–set which will be reinforced to help support any future successes and career choices.
To achieve these aims, there are several activities which we have planned to take place at various times during the week: 1. Tutor time activities; 2. Allan Beswick, presenter of the BBC Radio Manchester Breakfast Show, will be speaking to Year 9 students as part of their English lesson on Monday 15th December; 3. Seven Year 10 students will be taking part in a Creative and Digital Media Competition; 4. During Period 3 and some of Period 4 (11.15‐12.30) on Tuesday 16th December, Games Designer Zuby Ahmed will be coming in to talk to a selection of Year 7 & 8; 5. Trafford College is running an Animation Masterclass with a selection of Year 11 students during Period 5 on Wednesday 17th December; 6. A Graphic Designer will be visiting the Year 10 Graphics class for a question and answer session during Period 4 on Thursday 18th December. WINTER FAIR, THURSDAY 18TH DECEMBER Our annual Winter Fair takes place in the Main Hall from 3.00‐5.30 p.m. on Thursday 18th December, to raise money for the Year 10 students’ trip to Spain. There will be a huge selection of stalls including seasonal goodies, gifts, beauty treatments, food, fun and games and maybe a visit from Santa himself! Staff, students, parents and members of the local community are all welcome to come and join the fun. If you would like to make a donation you can bring it in on Monday or Tuesday – we are looking for food, toys, games, books, clothes, shoes, accessories, make‐up etc. CORNERSTONE CHRISTMAS COLLECTION Students in Years 10 and 11 will be donating items for the Cornerstone Day Centre, a local centre which provides services to adults facing a wide range of social issues including homelessness, poverty, social isolation, poor mental health, and drug and alcohol addiction. We are collecting:
Boxes of teabags Soup Biscuits Jam Sugar
If you would also like to donate an item, please ask your child to bring it into school and put it into the box at the end of the Maths corridor. Many thanks for your generosity and support. CONTAINERS NEEDED We are always in need of boxes for students to bring home dishes they have made in Food Technology. If you are planning on buying big tins or tubs of sweets over Christmas, please give the empties to your child to bring to the Technology Department. Clean take‐away containers would be useful too. Thanks in advance for your help.
SCHOOL COUNCIL On Monday, representatives from all Tutor Groups will be meeting together to discuss a range of topics which are of interest to our students. The subjects for this session will include: 1. Bells 2. Lockers 3. Lessons – enjoyment and engagement in lessons 4. Behaviour – social time 5. Show My Homework: Are students using it? Do they understand how to use it? Have they noticed that teachers are setting more homework? 6. Volunteering 7. Charity Fund Raising SPORTS NEWS Year 7 Football Match Report (by Subeer Ahmed) On Wednesday 3rd December 2014, Year 7 Manchester Academy Football Team met East Manchester Academy. We were playing away. When we arrived there, we had three minutes of warm up due to the light and then we got lined up. The starting line‐up was, Hilal Khan, Lewis Jawando, Subeer Ismail, Isse Hassan, Ahmed Ali, Ali Salim, Abdulrahman Arifi, Harith Hamza, and Mohamed Hajji. This left Abbet and Hafid on the bench. Manchester Academy had a problem from the off. The problem was they had a giant ‘taller than Mr Smith’, he was very strong and powerful and we knew we had our work cut out from the off. The first half went great, Abdirahman was taking people on down the wings, and Isse was showing his appreciation. Then the goal everyone was waiting for came. Abdirahman got past two players and put a through ball to Ali Salim. Ali sprinted, he couldn’t miss it. He lobbed the keeper and celebrated the goal by picking his shirt up so we could see his Tom and Jerry shirt underneath. However, two minutes before half time, the big man got past the team with only Isse left. Anxious Isse could not stop the 45‐year‐old look‐alike from scoring. The referee blew the whistle and it was half time with the score 1 – 1. The second started and two substitutions were made by Mr Smith. Ahmed came off for Hafid and Mohammed came off for Abbet. The second half wasn’t as good as the first half with Manchester Academy losing their shape slightly. The opposition won a number of corners and scored one with a lovely header. Subeer was keeping the big man off the ball by getting in the way and drawing fouls. The score was 2‐1 to them with everyone now getting tired. Hafid and Abbet came off to let Ahmed and Mohamed back on. Then, five minutes before full time the big man scored again, with a powerful shot into the right of the net, there was nothing Hilal could have done about it. It wasn’t our day to win, Mr Smith called us in and he said, this should have been our win and the first half was the best football he had seen us play, and we had to keep the good work up. He also gave Subeer the Man of the Match for putting up with a player that was far taller and stronger than him and doing very well. STARS OF THE WEEK The Stars of the Week are awarded the Principal’s Merit which is worth five ordinary merits. They also meet the Principal for breakfast on Friday morning and have their photograph taken to commemorate their achievement. The photograph is then printed onto a card and posted home.
