FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers Welcome back to the new school term! A very special welcome to the 3 year olds who joined us for the first time on Monday. They are the newest and, in most cases, the tiniest members of our school community! I am delighted that Iona now offers a 3 year old programme. As we are operational, and in an effort to continue the programme into 2017, I would encourage any interested parents to pop into the office to complete an enrolment form so that we can commence the process of placing students as soon as they turn 3. The pre-kindy operates Mondays and Fridays from 9am until 3pm. If you would like any additional information please speak with the staff in the office, Mrs Anderson or myself.

OUR MISSION Iona Presentation Primary School, as a loving community, seeks to educate each child within a framework of Catholic values in an atmosphere of trust, openness and truth

NANO NAGLE The lantern she carried through the darkness in the streets and lanes of Cork became a symbol for the poor of God’s love, touching and transforming the harshness of their lives and offering hope. Today that lantern has become the symbol of the mission of the Presentation Sisters around the world.

Our Values

On Thursday morning, we had the opportunity to thank our mums and grandmas for all that they do for us. It was wonderful that so many of our parents and extended family members were able to join us for this special celebration. Treacey Hall was filled to capacity with many staying behind to enjoy morning tea. Thanks to the community members who participated in the mass. Special thanks to Mr Loiacono, Mrs Quinlan, Mrs Perica, Mrs Rigby, Mrs Baker, Mrs Anderson and Sr Catherine for their efforts in organising the mass and the serving of morning tea. Thank you to the staff who volunteered to provide a plate for the morning tea after mass, there were many delicious treats to try! It was certainly a memorable event!

The cooler weather has arrived a little earlier than in previous years with many students making the change to winter uniform already. For those who haven’t transitioned, the two week roll in period concludes today so from Monday, May 9, all students should be wearing their winter uniform. Thank you for your cooperation. This Sunday is a special day for our much loved Iona mums and grandmas. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to show our appreciation for all that our mums do for us. Once a mum always a mum! A mother’s love knows no boundary in respect to their child or children and their ability to function in the most challenging of conditions has to be seen to be believed! On behalf of all staff I wish our mums and grandmas a happy and restful day. May there be peace in your house and much love surrounding you this Mother’s Day! A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take

Special Announcement

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK A Mother's Love A Mother's love is something that no on can explain, It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain, It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may For nothing can destroy it or take that love away… It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking… It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems… It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, And it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation… A many splendored miracle man cannot understand And another wondrous evidence of God's tender guiding hand. Indonesian News Students from Years 3-6 explored the significance of the banyan tree on the Indonesian Coat of Arms. They discovered that the tree is to represent persatuan. Upon closer inspection, students could see the base word satu (one), which means unity. The banyan tree has many strong roots, these represent the many cultural, language and religious groups within Indonesia, that unite as one beautiful and strong tree. Students were each given their own leaf and on it wrote their name: Nama saya Tundi and their family’s origins: Keluarga saya dari England and France. Students could see the diversity of their own community and some discovered orgins they were unaware of. The students’ leaves were put together in the library to create the Iona tree, which represents our school community, where our many diverse roots create a strong community.

Our Music Program is gaining momentum this year. The following students have been awarded music scholarships for 2017 at Iona Presentation College: Riley-Jayne - French Horn Holly - Bass Guitar Lucy H - Trumpet Charlie - Viola Congratulations to all the girls.

PE News Iona Primary ranked #3 in Australia for Fitness & Skills   Recently, Channel 7 Today Tonight program ran a story on fitness and skill testing and the importance of trained PE specialists in Primary schools. The data was collated by Dr Gary Tester from Sports Challenge Australia. The data reflected that   Iona Junior School was 3rd behind Guildford Primary and Penrhos with all schools tested across Australia over the past 20 years.  This is a fantastic result and thanks has to also be attributed to the many parents and volunteers who give up their time to coach sports teams before and after school. This combined effort and hard work by all involved is helping our children become fitter and healthier, which can only be a good thing with the rise in childhood obesity.

This Sunday we celebrate the solemnity of the Ascension- only one more week of the Easter season to go. Of course this year the Ascension coincides with Mother's Day. It may not seem so, but I actually think there is parallel between these two celebrations.

The Ascension recalls when Jesus ascended into heaven, as He said He would. Now the Apostles, were left wondering what was going to happen to them, and how they would be able to carry on the work of Jesus.

Jesus promised them that he would send them an advocate, the Holy Spirit. We will celebrate that next Sunday on Pentecost Sunday (the end of the Easter season). You see, Jesus taught the Apostles how to do things, and what they should do in order to be a strong witness to the faith. The same is with mothers (and parents) in fact. As much as you might like to be, you can't be with your children 24/7. You have to let go, as you leave them in the care of teachers here at school. But you know that you have done your best to teach your children how to behave in various situations, and you trust that they will do you proud and not let you down. It isn't always easy to let go, neither for the leader to leave his/her followers behind, and neither for the followers to not have a leader- they can become like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus commanded his disciples to “go and teach all people his Gospel,” and that “he is with them always, until the end of the world. (Matthew 28:19-20). It is just as well that the Apostles followed Jesus’ command, because they were the first generation to hand down Jesus' teaching and each generation has subsequently followed. Now it's our turn, to teach everyone about the message of Jesus. No one is asking us to hold up a placard at the red lights of a major intersection. Instead, by the way we interact with others, our prayers we say at home, our participation in the Mass and sacraments in our parish communities on the weekend, are ways we live, hear and proclaim Jesus' message and in turn become witnesses to Him.

However, it was a worthwhile film, and the end part encapsulates the fact that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us with him and our loved ones who have gone before us. As we celebrate the Ascension this Sunday, let us trust in Jesus' promise that he is always with us. When we experience challenges, may we turn to him for guidance. When we have joys, let us celebrate them and give thanks to him for the 'good times.' I hope that will be a great source of encouragement to the mothers in our school community. I hope that you have a day filled with many blessings on Sunday and that you truly get spoiled. The goodness and love your children lavish you with on Mother’s day, are signs of God's goodness and presence in your life, and a sign that you have taught your children well, for they are thankful for all that you do for them. A Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers and grandmothers.

Alessio Loiacono Liturgy Co-ordinator

There are so many situations in our life when we feel as though God is not with us. It is precisely in those moments that He is. It's just that we are so emotionally and physically exhausted then, we aren't able to notice the presence of the Lord. The Apostles experienced this feeling of despair. The same is with you. Sometimes you feel as though your children didn't understand the message or lesson that you were trying to teach them, so you show them over and over, till they get it. Jesus took many goes to get the twelve to trust him. Just a final note on this wonderful feast day we are celebrating this weekend. (Please note this is a SPOILER ALERT). I went to watch the film A Lady in the Van a couple of weeks ago. I won’t go into the plot here, but at the end of the film, the “lady in the van” (played by Maggie Smith) dies, and she meets the fellow who died when he ran into her van several years earlier. It is interesting to note that in her role in the film, she is a practising Catholic. At the end of the film, she asks for an ascension and she gets it. Well, that’s not quite correct, for only Jesus ascended into heaven. Mary was assumed into heaven, and we hope to have our bodies reunited with our souls in heaven one day too.
