NEWSLETTER 11 MARCH 2016

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Carers Believe it or not, we are two weeks away from Easter. I find myself thinking…but where has all the time gone? We all lead very busy lives – family commitments, work responsibilities, social obligations, sporting commitments…the list is endless. Our lives are spent running from one commitment to another with barely an opportunity to take the next breath.

IONA PRESENTATION PRIMARY SCHOOL MOSMAN PARK

It’s always good for our bodies and our spirit to have some time to stop, think and reflect, and with two weeks to go, it’s never too late to evaluate where we have been in our Lenten endeavours and the direction we need to take over the next week or two.

Buckland Ave, Mosman Park WA 6012 Ph: 08 9286 9100 FAX: 08 9384 2289 EMAIL: [email protected]

OUR MISSION Iona Presentation Primary School, as a loving community, seeks to educate each child within a framework of Catholic values in an atmosphere of trust, openness and truth

Before we can evaluate where we are, we need to clarify what Lent means to ourselves. To me, Lent is about simplicity and renewal. It’s about concentrating on what is important in my life and having the courage to shed the trappings that complicate it. Not easy when we live in a world that measures worth by how much we own or do. In the lead up to Easter then, let us take the time to reflect on the journey and change what we need to, to become more like Jesus.

NANO NAGLE The lantern she carried through the darkness in the streets and lanes of Cork became a symbol for the poor of God’s love, touching and transforming the harshness of their lives and offering hope. Today that lantern has become the symbol of the mission of the Presentation Sisters around the world.

Our Values

St Patrick’s Day Next Thursday, we celebrate St Patrick’s Day with the College. This day is one of the highlights of our school’s liturgical calendar – a day to celebrate with the many Irish Presentation Sisters at the convent.

All students in Years 1-6 will be travelling to the College for Mass and we look forward to celebrating this wonderful day with the staff and students at the College. Mass starts at 12.00pm and we invite all parents and friends to come along and celebrate with us. More information can be found on our Facebook page and website. Professional Development Days On Tuesday and Wednesday, staff and parent representatives were involved in working towards a shared vision for our school. The two days were facilitated by Bill Martin and Brendan Spillane who will be working with the school over the next three years in developing and realizing our vision. Both Bill and Brendan are renowned educators who work with schools and businesses around the world. The focus for this year is the creation of a shared vision and identification of the core values embedded in the shared vision. Over the year, staff will be exploring best practice from around the world to design ways to move the school forward towards this shared vision. We thank the parents who contributed over the two days. Your contributions were invaluable to us. As staff reach a consensus on our vision for Iona, we will share this with the community. We look forward to sharing our journey with all of you. House Swimming Carnival Congratulations to all the students in Years 4 -6 on your wonderful participation in the swimming carnival today. Liturgy Corner

Holy Week - The Blue Ribbon Event of the Liturgical Year - Part 1 Holy Week will soon be upon us- in twelve days in fact, beginning with Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. I am taking the opportunity to write a two part column on Holy Week. Holy Week is the climax of the Liturgical Year, and hence I am likening Holy Week to the blue ribbon event of the liturgical calendar. Why is that? Well, it a week full of drama, pageantry, joy, tears, sorrow, confusion, uncertainty and questions about commitment – that of the Apostles as well as of our own.

The liturgical colour for Palm Sunday (that is the colour the priest will wear on Palm Sunday) is red. If you go to Mass on Palm Sunday, I encourage you to wear red. On that note, on Holy Thursday we will be having Stations of the Cross here at school. I am extending a very warm invitation to you parents, grandparents and others to come to our Stations of the Cross. My invitation comes to you as an opportunity to pray and meditate on the Stations with us - staff and students alike. If you are able to come, I encourage you to wear something with red, the colour of Good Friday.

Mr Alessio Loiacono Liturgy Co-ordinator

Everything starts off wonderfully on Palm Sunday, with Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and people waving palm branches, singing “Hosanna.” Jesus certainly made a triumphant entry into Jerusalem. He had “celebrity status.” It was wonderful - no one was in any trouble, and everyone was having a great time. However, that was all about to change! There are two important aspects to our Palm Sunday liturgy that the Church still incorporates into the liturgy to this day. Firstly, the blessing of palms, which is usually followed by a procession, with people carrying palms into the church. Secondly, we hear the Passion story. This tells the story of the lead up and the eventual crucifixion and death of Jesus on the Cross. I don’t think the Twelve Apostles had any idea of what they were getting themselves into when they accepted Jesus’ call to follow him. Jesus chose twelve ordinary men from different walks of life. When things were going well, it was easy for them, like on Palm Sunday. But as the week progressed they became scared, confused, and were probably almost ready to “take their bat and ball” and go home. Our daily life experiences can be like those of the twelve Apostles. Just when we think we have everything figured out, everything goes pear shaped. You know yourselves, when you are trying to get children ready in the morning for school, and a child hurts themselves, one is sick, or just when you arrive at school, one remembers they left their homework behind. All these and other situations require a great deal of thinking on the spot. Everything was planned, only to be turned upside down. That can be a challenge, but we do our best to take everything in its stride.
