“If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room.”

Tête-à-tête

Hello readers,
We as students are bubbling with energy, so why not consume it in new things rather than just scrolling through our news feeds! Steve Jobs said, "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish", but we are no more hungry to know more. We need to step out of our mundane routine and redefine, first ourselves and then the world. By redefine, I mean giving a new meaning to what we think we can do.
Now, why are we constraining our abilities according to the opportunities available to us, why can’t we create our own opportunities ?
We've all seen inspirational quotes that encourage us to get out and do something strange—something we wouldn't normally do—but getting out of our routine just takes so much work, isn't it?
“Why cook something new when a delicious meal is being served on our plates” has become our ideology and we need to change it.How many times have you taken an initiative to lead? To stop that boy in the bus from throwing that packet of chips outside the window or to be the voice of a change you want to see?
Why have we as students stopped learning for knowledge, stopped participating 'just for fun' and stopped innovating with open minds ? If there weren’t people willing to think out of the box, go beyond the fixed modus operandi we would still be in the stone age. Being the generation next, we need to keep innovating. We can not settle and we shall not settle.
So what’s the idea brewing in your head today?

How to stop the "Tap Tap Tap"

Social media is a versatile and fun way to ‘connect’ with people. It shrinks distances and brings the world closer. But it is easy (sometimes, too easy) to spend hours and lose yourself in this virtual construct. Before you know it, you find yourself having wasted three long hours scrolling through Facebook or Instagram. We’ve all been there and it becomes almost impossible to put the phone down and get things done. This seemingly light issue can build up over time to drastically hamper productivity, affecting self-confidence and performance in the process. So, here are a few things you can do to combat this problem and make the most out of life-
•Ask yourself what benefits you are reaping from social media. Do you regret those hours wasted later on? If so, it is time to make amends.
•Consider the worthwhile activities you can do instead, such as going for a walk, studying, picking up a new hobby or learning to play an instrument - the world is yours to explore!
 • Decide on the amount of time that you can spare for social media each day and try not to exceed this limit. Apps like Offtime, Cold Turkey (which temporarily block social media and gaming sites for a set period of time) or simply a stop-watch timer can be helpful in staying on track.
 • If you find yourself too addicted, consider deactivating your social media accounts. While this may seem difficult, it is something that will truly help you utilise your time better.
 • Lastly, convince a friend to do the same with you. This will provide support to both and prevent you from falling back to your old habits. Moreover, it is always awesome to have a partner in crime!
 • Also, if you need more assistance you can get counselling as social media addiction is a very prevalent problem these days.

Abhilash Sen Gupta, Head Boy of DPS Bhilai for the session 2014 gave us a virtual interview. He is presently pursuing sports engineering at Australia on scholarship. Check out our website for the complete interview. Tell us how to multi task during your 12th, being a member of students' council, taking part in extra curricular and yet scoring a decent board result.
I believe prioritising is the key here. I know it can be hard to begin with, there will be days when its just not falling in the right place and nothing seems to work out. But let's face it, we're human beings and slacks are in our virtue. But it's all about being at it and consistently working on it. That's what makes the difference between potential students and potentially accomplished ones. Another important aspect is you enjoying what you're doing. Following a routine will be hard if you're not enjoying it. Now, I might sound unrealistic if I said to thoroughly enjoy your studies, but I'd rather say, enjoy all that you can but give time to priorities in the end as well. Take one day at a time. Sports engineering was always on my head, and every time, I had spare time I'd scribble a little about it. I did sport as well and my parents were supportive about it. I loved some fresh air and also could relate sports science with it. How is Australia treating you? Was it difficult to adjust? How did you cope up?
Australia is great! I am enjoying the overall experience. I always wanted to travel around the globe and this is my first individual step to it. I've made my own world in here and love every second of it. I reckon it was hard at first ‘cause of language issues. I've made heaps of international friends from around the globe, which makes me feel well connected and confident while talking overseas. I guess that's a really big plus in having an overseas education. Studies are far more practical and realistic. I've designed shoes and bridges in my first year of engineering itself! With all respect to the resources provided, it does amaze me how I managed to actually finish them. Now that I think about it, the pattern of education is pretty seamless. I'm liking it. It gives a good space for practical learning without over-burdening. Not only my university, but Australia in general is also tolerant to international needs, which gives us enough room to break away from our nutshells and embrace a truly worldly experience. I would definitely recommend Australia as a study destination. What would you say to other students who wish to pursue off beat paths but don't have the courage to.
To answer this effectively, I'll have to come down to what I thought when I was at school. We, as students have always been hearing things from our relatives, friends and other sources and sort of create an illusionary picture on our mind of what success means to us. We always have a tendency to have someone to back ourselves up in achieving our goals. That is probably why mainstream goals like engineering from IITs or medical for AIMS passé in the present times; only because there are so many people out there to actually agree to you when you say out such goals. I was lucky on my part that my family was very supportive in me choosing a field that I really liked.
Parents and siblings are your best support. They'll be the ones understanding you the best, and in choosing an "off beat" course, you'd probably want someone by your side, who is the easiest person to convince. So, in the first place, try and convince them about your goals realistically and gather their opinion to shape a strong base for your future plans. Once you have them on your side, things automatically get much more easier.
You'll always have someone who'll believe in you. And while the rest of the world doesn't support or understand your goals, you'll secretly posses the power to keep you going and ultimately achieving what you truly desired. Also, it is important to respect your teachers' opinions, cause believe it or not they've dealt with so many students already that they sort of understand what you mean, even when you can't clearly explain it to them. I cannot, cannot stress enough on my school teachers' role in making me whoever I am today. I feel truly blessed to have had them as my educators. Teachers are a wonderful resource. Always treat them with respect 'cause in the end they'll only be happy hearing about your success.
Also, if you're thinking of considering careers which interest you but aren't exactly mainstream and need some external support, pop me a message and I'll be glad to talk to you about it! I'll try my best to ease things out for you.

company. It's just a small startup- The Vintage Gear. Here, I make handmade cards, innovative gifts and DIYs. I try and give life to my client's imagination. Moreover, everything we make is eco-friendly as we try and use recyclable raw material.
How do you manage it? My weekends are usually fully devoted to work. Sincere time management has become a part of life now and as a result I plan

Have you thought of swimming as a career? I have not thought of swimming as a career, at least not until now. Maybe in the future when I get into a college, I will think about it. Most people in India don't think of sports as a career option. I don't swim to make a life in it, I am passionate about what I do and that's why I do it.

everything up well in advance. I do tend to procrastinate sometimes but gradually I am learning to increase my efficiency. I usually keep semi finished material stocked up for emergencies to avoid last moment panic. I am truly passionate about my venture and so I always have to courage to solve all hurdles that I face.

How do you manage both studies and swimming ?
Managing both studies and sports together is a tough task. In lower classes I was able to manage but when I came to eleventh standard I understood that the road was not going to be smooth, so I started going to swimming practices in the morning before school. The days on which I don't have any tuitions in the evening, I go to practice in evening also. But in winter I can't train at all.

From where did you get the idea? All the credit goes to my mother - my mentor. I believe I have inherited this creativity from her because since childhood craftwork has always attracted me. However, the thought of creating my own stuff dawned upon me at a handicraft fair. I came across a stall filled with self-made articles which fascinated and triggered my mind.

Tell us more about the importance of your family in your victory. My dad had been my backbone since the beginning of this journey. He is the man behind all my glory and success today. until 7th standard I was the slowest among all the swimmers at our school swimming pool. He saw this and took me to the ground for running and exercising which helped me increase my stamina and fitness. My mother also supports me but sometimes she gets mad at me when I return late to home from my practices and starts scolding me. She had always been my moral support, but she is the typical Indian mother who only wants her child to study.

What would you say to the budding entrepreneurs who have the vision but not the courage to start? My message to all the budding 'crafters' would be- Follow your instincts! The latent seed of creativity exists within ever yone, all it needs is courage and patience to bloom. Yes, there will be difficulties and moments when you feel nothing is working out, but you should always remember to be determined to see the final destination and not tremble seeing the stormy path.

Know thy staff

Since when are you linked to this school and what all jobs have you done? Also, tell us about your family.
I joined this school on 5th March 2005 as a gate keeper and for the past 3 yrs I have worked as Bio Lab Attendant.
I live with my wife and my two children, who are pursuing studies.
Are you still in touch with students who've passed out ?
I feel blessed when old students meet me with gratitude. Even if I am meeting them after a very long time, they always show respect and greet me with a smile. Also, today's world is a technical one and so I feel connected to many students like Avish Kaura and Mansi Nema through social media.
Do you find any difference in behaviour of today's students ?
Yes, there is a slight change in today's students. Earlier they used to come and ask about the details of every practical and cleared their doubts. They were curious to know more. But somehow I feel that the curiosity is missing today. I was a Bio student myself and even I used to try different things in the lab, yes we were mischievous but we always wanted to learn more. I find that missing now-a-days.
Do you remember any anecdote that you could share related to your time in DPS Bhilai ?
I have a plethora of good memories here. It's an amazing feeling when the children and grandchildren of the students whom I've seen and helped, join this school. It's like a legacy which always makes us smile.
However, there is one hilarious incident in particular. It was when Shamim Bhai and I went to invite dignitaries to some function. When we reached we saw that their house was locked, so we decided to slide the card from beneath the gate. But soon I realised that I had slid the card in the wrong house and the only way to take it out by putting my hands under the gate. The funny part is *laughs* while I was doing so, a pet dog suddenly appeared, our eyes met and it got frightened more than me and hid away. I took out the card in peace after that.

Opinion Poll Do you think our school should have more subject choices(eg: psychology, humanities, fine arts etc.)?

Should our school organize events such as mock parliament and MUNs, would you be interested to be a part?

Do you second having different student led clubs such as 'debate club', 'photography club' etc.?
