This week I was in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia to meet the AU Commissioner for Human Resources,

Science

and

Technology.

On 16 and 17 April 2018, UNESCO went on a fact finding mission in Makueni County, Kenya, to gather some information at the country level to inform the development of the health literacy digital contacts in partnership with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). During the mission partner primary schools, secondary schools and ICT Constituency Centres were identified to pilot the initiative. Moreover orientation was provided by health and educational

county

representatives

in

the

content

focus

of

the

programme.

On 23 April 2018 we are celebrating World Book Day and Copyright Day, highlighting the transformative power of literature, writing, reading, translating and publishing, which help individuals to raise and fulfill themselves. As a matter of fact, books are at the intersection of some of the most essential human freedoms, primarily freedom of expression and freedom to publish. Our duty at UNESCO is to protect these freedoms and these rights, by promoting reading and writing in order to fight illiteracy and poverty, to strengthen the foundations of Peace, as well as to protect the publishing-related professions and professionals. In Uganda, six female participants from the UNESCO project to “Strengthen the Artistic, Design and Marketing Skills of the Crafts Industry Sector in Uganda”, funded by the Republic of Korea Funds-in-Trust to UNESCO (KFIT), will join in the celebration of World Intellectual Property Day on 26 April 2018 in Kampala under the theme “Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity”. They will display some of the new designs and products developed as

part

of

the

KFIT

project.

What happened this week A Fact Finding Mission in Makueni County on Development of Digital Health Literacy Materials Kenya

A fact-finding mission was undertaken by the HIV and AIDS Programme Officer and CI Adviser, together with representatives from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). The purpose of the mission was to engage the county representatives in Makueni and identify the pilot schools and other relevant community structures that could pilot the digital health

literacy

project.

As a result, 5 primary schools that represent combined Early Childhood Care and Development and Primary Education, urban, peri-urban and urban primary schools and a school with high drop-out rates have been identified In addition, three secondary schools representing represent a boys school, a girls school and a mixed school and have functional ICT laboratories and ICT Champion teachers will be targeted. The team visited a small ICT Constituency Hub, in order to assess the ICT infrastructure and recommended that the 3 ICT Constituency Hubs in Wote that

meeting on SDG4-Education 2030 in Uganda on 20 April 2018 to review the

country's

implementation

progress of

the

on SDG4

Education 2030 agenda and devise strategies for institutionalizing further SDG4 implementation at all levels of education. The meeting also focused on devising strategies for integrating the SDG4 indicators into EMIS especially the new ones under SDG4 - target 4.7. The meeting was attend by 60 high level officials who included, Ministers of Education of Education and Sports, The UN Resident Coordinator, Directors and Commissioners of affiliate bodies of the MoES, the Parliamentary Committee on education and some members of the education development partners and a representative of the UNESCO Regional Director, Mr. Teeluck Bhuwanee. By the end of the meeting, the top leadership of the government had prioritized key areas for attention among which include ensuring that the education monitoring and information system has been revamped to be re-aligned with the SDG4 indicators. This will commence with a training of all EMIS staff at MOES as well as other line Ministries linked to education such as Ministry

of

Health.
