Nantwich-based event rider Paul Sims managed to retain his crown in last year’s Advanced Intermediate class for a second term, pocketing the highlycoveted £1,000 winner’s cheque. In 2015, Paul claimed victory with Fred and Roselle Willis’s ‘Last Secret’ and then returned to head-up the 2016 leader board riding Jolyon Chamber’s ‘Mystic Million’, despite the best efforts of a topclass field of riders. With a total prize pot on offer of £3,000, this year’s AI looks set to be another exhilarating competition and with Paul planning to defend his title aboard his 2015 winner Last Secret and the Badminton-bound ‘Glengarnock’, the question must be: can Sims make it a hatrick? Said Paul: “The prize money on offer to the winner of the Advanced Intermediate class at Kelsall Hill is brilliant for our sport. Last Secret is in good form and we’re hoping to make it a treble victory for our team and a double victory for the mare!” 5

“We’re very proud to sponsor the Keyflow Feeds Kelsall Hill Arena Eventing Championships which is another great opportunity to support up and coming riders and future stars of the sport. At Keyflow, we believe in improving the long-term health and wellbeing of horses so they can look, feel and perform beyond expectation. Supporting great local events like this is all a part of that journey.” Cam W. Price MD of Keyflow Feeds.

Julie Lucy admits to there being an element of beginner’s luck behind her victory in the BE90 championships with her ‘horse of a lifetime’ Aimee. “We’re newcomers to Arena Eventing but I’ve discovered that Aimee has the perfect stride for it. Thank you to the team at Kelsall Hill, this win has given me the confidence to pursue my dream of riding at their spring horse trials,” said Julie.

12-year-old Kiera Booth, led the 50-strong BE80 league table from the outset with her ‘superstar pony’, ‘Gucci’. “We can’t believe that lightning has struck twice! To be Novice champion again is incredibly rewarding!” said Ben, who plans to move up to BE Intermediate level this year. It was another case of déjà vu in the BE100 league when Kirsty Clarkson repeated her 2016 victory aboard the striking ‘Oliedunit’ and prevented runners up Ben Read and Dougal from finishing double-handed. Kirsty, who is sponsored by Equine & Pet Feeds in Knutsford, said: “It’s wonderful to have another win at this amazing venue. Olie’s the best horse I’ve owned and this means so much to us.”

In this series we find out more about our team and, in this issue, we welcome our new British Eventing Technical Advisor Simon Grundy. Originally from the Lake District, Simon’s love of equestrian sport started in childhood, initially as a member of the Pony Club and later through his involvement with Pointto-Point riding. Simon’s interest in course building began when his children joined the Pony Club and he now builds cross country courses and Working Hunter tracks at venues including the Royal Three Counties Show.

“As a BE Technical Advisor (TA), I work alongside the BE Steward to oversee the technical safety, preparatory arrangements and successful running of an event. However, none of this can be achieved without support of the team who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Each member of this team is equally important, from those in the lorry park and the secretaries, to the scorers and the control team. An event can’t run smoothly without the input of eachand-every member.
