1. ITT focus The recent TSA meeting focused on ITT, including an overview of the School Direct process

Alliance schools are encouraged to continue to engage in ITT as much as possible, whichever route. School Direct bids must be in groups of at least five schools. St Marylebone TSA leads on this, offering free admin support for UCAS. School Direct explained here >> 2015-16 Thanks to the eight schools that are working with us on recruiting School Direct teachers. They are working closely with Emma Curties Teaching School Coordinator [email protected] and Louise Vink AHT i/c ITT [email protected]

School Direct Overview and details here >> Sample cost of School Direct here >> UCAS School Direct available across the TS Alliance here >> Discussed at the meeting and useful reminders: The SD process: see the SD timeline here >> ) Also at the end of this document (Thanks to West London TSA and e-Q for the input into this)  School profiles (information selling your school to potential candidates) and uploading to UCAS: St Marylebone admin will be requesting these each June, prompt returns appreciated. Previously we’ve harvested school information from websites  Applications for partner school: arrive at St Marylebone then sent on to partner school promptly  Filtering of applications and how to reject: no need to interview, easy to reject unsuitable candidates immediately. Marylebone reject for you  University degrees from aboard: these are checked via eQ or IoE. Candidates should have had their certificates ‘NARIC-ed’ here >>  Calling for interview: quick turnaround essential as good candidates will have several live applications  “Closing soon, 75% recruitment national wide recruitment level....” this message arrives from NCTL when national recruitment levels are close to capacity. Schools need to quickly recruit after this message as subjects will close in spite of schools having successfully bid for places  Interviews: promptly arranged; no set format but should include a written test, a teaching activity and formal interview as a minimum. On the day sample Dropbox resources: https://goo.gl/9eKyhn  Offers & how to reject: prompt decisions are important; IOE places: St M. tell IOE of decision and they send the offer letter; eQ schools can send offer instructions direct to e-Q and they send offers to candidates  Key skills tests: complete ASAP but must be before starting QTS year; be sure to complete the on line practise tests first; critically, candidates that fail three times are ‘locked out’ for two years, no exception. Harsh. Only chance of employing them then is as an unqualified teacher/instructor  We discussed what can we collectively do to improve application numbers? Numbers applying for SD are low nationally. The system works well if you have a known person, such as an LSA that is ready for QTS. St Marylebone have had success recruiting graduate LSAs on the understanding that we will QTS suitable ones in year 2. Other ideas: own school website; own school newsletters; good value online advertising, such as Guardian on line with annual subscription; back of buses, maybe; discussed collective advert in Metro/Standard – researched: 4K for quarter page, 6k for half page – too much I think. Local papers might be a better option. 

Recruitment Fairs? Yes, we’ve been to plenty of these. Not very productive. In year issues – after offer letter an initial needs assessment is made by the provider (sometimes July, sometimes September); timetable arranged; for secondary: they do need access to Year 11 but can be team teaching; cause for concerns during the year are not unusual and can often lead to successful outcomes. Second school placements: collectively agreed to arrange these much sooner in the year. St Marylebone to coordinate. Bidding for places 2016-17: look out for briefing paper in May/June – St M awaiting NCTL direction Core Place - SCITT places. Vivien Johnston talked through these options. No cost to schools, trainees pay fees and can get scholarships. Email Vivien directly to discuss this option [email protected]

School Experience Portal (SEP) DfE portal Manage your potential teachers as they visit your school. Primary and Secondary options. Paid placements (£50 per day) for: Maths, Science Computer Science, Geography and MFL. Information: here >> Getting a login: here >> Advice: this does need some admin. time to manage SEP but the website is simple and effective.
