FSSAI rolls outs scheme for strengthening food testing

India is set to get new national milk safety standards after 60 years that will standardize outdated benchmarks for determining adulteration, include sources such as camel and yak and incorporate flavored and fortified milk.

FSSAI has rolled out a Rs. 481.95 crore scheme for strengthening  food testing  in the country, parliament was informed on Tuesday.

Under current guidelines set in 1954, only milk from cow, sheep, buffalo and goat is considered.The revised standards were also needed because of changes in environmental conditions, quality of fodder and water that cattle are consuming. Government has also approved Rs. 1,750 crore proposal for strengthening the country's drug regulatory system at the central and state levels. Govt. forming standards for special diets to help children with rare metabolic disorders The project is a part of country’s top food regulator-- Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) Diet4Life initiative, with experts participating from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, ICMR, Indian Dietetic Association, and Indian Academy of Pediatrics etc. To meet the special dietary needs of children suffering from rare metabolic disorders that affect an estimated 30,000 children in India, an expert committee is formulating guidelines for manufacturing, sale and distribution of such diets.IEM is a group of generic diseases and disorders, and people suffering from these disorders have special dietary needs as they can't digest normal food. These children require special diets to avoid developing cognitive and physical disorders. Liquor bottles may soon carry pictorial warnings – FSSAI mulling over move With an aim to warn people against ill effects of alcohol and drunk driving, FSSAI is in the process of finalizing standards for alcoholic beverage and is studying global practices regarding pictorial warnings and messages around drunk driving. India loses over 1,46,000 lives every year out of which 1,00,000 are due to drunk driving responsible for over 72 per cent of fatal road accidents. Pictorial messages will serve as an alert or reminder to road users about the hazards of drunk driving and help in reducing the risk of road accidents tragedies. FSSAI panel to address concerns on health supplements nutraceuticals FSSAI is in the process of addressing concerns raised by the industry on new standards for eight categories of products, including health supplements and nutraceuticals, which were notified in 2016. "These standards will come into force for compliance from January 1, 2018, so we have a little time at hand before these come into compliance and hopefully we will be able to iron out differences and concerns. FSSAI issues draft notification regarding revision of standards for Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil & Palm oil FSSAI has invited comments, objections and suggestions regarding revision of standards for Kachi Ghani Mustard Oil, Palm oil with regard to melting point, Vanaspati and New Standards of Palm Stearin; Palm Kernel Olein, Palm Kernel Stearin, Superolein, Avocado Oil and also inclusion of Peroxide Value in standards of all vegetable oils. India launches InFoLNet and Food Safety on Wheels and strengthens labs India has launched the Indian Food Laboratory Network (InFoLNet) and Food Safety on Wheels, strengthened state food testing laboratories, compiled a toolkit for rapid testing of common adulterants and decided to conduct the examination for junior analysts. Testing of food gives confidence to consumers that food is safe for consumption. It is an integral part of the food safety ecosystem. The number and spread of food testing labs in the country is currently inadequate. To strengthen the food testing infrastructure, FSSAI is encouraging both public and private investment in food testing infrastructure. With the support of the Central government, the country’s apex food regulator has taken up strengthening of State food labs, provision of mobile food labs and related initiatives. Shrimp Exports: India turns world No 1 in 2016 India claimed the top spot in shrimp exports to the global market in 2016 with an unprecedented 14.5% growth over the previous year, according to a trade report by FAO’s Globefish, which is responsible for information and analysis on international fish trade and markets. The report says that India also achieved the distinction of 130% growth in the exports of value-added shrimp, growing from 10,100 tonne in 2015 to 23,400 tonne in 2016, mostly directed to the US market. India is the second-largest fish producer in the world after China and accounts for nearly 6% of global fish production. Seafood exports from the country hit an all-time high last fiscal with the total revenue touching $5.78 billion, or Rs 37,870.90 crore, by exporting 11,34,948 tonne seafood products, largely due to a robust demand for frozen shrimp and fish. According to Globefish, the top five shrimp exporters to the international market in 2016 were India (438,500 tonne, +14.5%), Vietnam (425,000 tonne, +18–20 %), Ecuador (372,600 tonne, +7.8%), Indonesia (220,000 tonne, +21%) and Thailand (209,400 tonne, +22%). Telangana govt proposes establishing Nizamabad spice park for turmeric The Central government has received a proposal from the government of Telangana for the establishment of a spice park in Nizamabad for turmeric. . The Centre also approved the setting up of a Spice Development Agency (SDA) for Telangana, having its headquarters in Warangal to co-coordinate with the state and Central agencies implementing programmes for research, production, marketing, quality improvement and export of spices, including chilli and turmeric. The government has implemented several programmes for providing assistance to spice farmers, including chilli and turmeric farmers. Modification in Contract Specifications - Chana (CHANA) NCDEX has modified the contract Specification of Chana, as per Circular No. NCDEX/TRADING-96/2016/232 dated September 22, 2016, has modified the contract specifications in Chana (Desi Unprocessed Whole Raw Chana (Not for direct human consumption)), (CHANA) Futures contract expiring in month of December 2017 and thereafter. The contracts expiring in month of December 2017 and January 2018 will be available for trading from September 01, 2017. Contracts for further expiries will be launched as per the existing contract launch calendar.

NCML- CommGrade inaugurates its food testing laboratory at Chennai, adding to its already existing network of laboratories. It’s the third hi-end laboratory in down South after Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
