Each year students run Lizid Festival - a week-long festival of music concerts through morning tea and their lunch. The student run Lizid Festival was started by Old Boy Dominic Miller, who is now an entertainment agent after having had a successful performing career. This year featured 10 concerts, one each morning tea and lunch, with the proceeds of the concerts (gold coin donation upon entry) being donated to charity. It was great to see a range of students participating and to see a full range of instruments represented. Well done to all boys and staff involved this year.

A note from the Principal This week I received information through the College Archives showing the original deed of the College property to the Trustees of the Christian Brothers. This deed was signed in 1917 by the Bishop of the Day, James Duhig. I was most interested to see documentation showing our beginning as a College. On the same day, I received a visit from Mr Peter Gifford who has been Principal in several Catholic schools. Peter is 90 years of age. Amongst other roles, Peter was Principal at St Mark’s Inala in the 1980’s. It was great to discuss how Catholic Education had changed over the years. Peter has journeyed through an era where Priests, Brothers and Nuns staffed our schools, and where money was so tight that class sizes in some schools, including St Laurence’s College, were in excess of 100 students. I was delighted to show Peter through our site. We have built our Catholic system on the back of the sacrifice of our parents and grandparents. A great change for our students has been access to an equitable share of government funding. On Tuesday, I attended a function hosted by QCEC at the Parliamentary Annex and I was delighted to hear the Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, and the Education Minister, Kate Jones, speak of their commitment to all education sectors and the commitment to parent choice. Recently the Federal Government has announced changes to the funding model from 2018. It is my hope that all sectors continue to receive an equitable distribution of funding into the future. Strategic Plan Over the last few weeks, many focus groups have been held at the College to set our direction for the next 3-5 years. I thank Staff, Parents, Students, Board Members, Old Boys and Foundation Members for their support. The aim of these focus sessions is to provide direction for our surveys to go out to parents prior to the end of term. I think that this process has been exceptional and I thank Mark Vincent from Insight Plus for his facilitation of the process. Lizid This week our staff, students and past students have been involved in our annual LIZID Music festival at the College. It was amazing to see the range of talent within our community. This festival is a great way to showcase the musical talents of our boys. I thank our music staff for their generosity and continual commitment to our boys.

AIC Sport against Marist College Ashgrove This weekend all Football and Rugby matches against Marist College Ashgrove will be held at Runcorn. This day is traditionally a great day for Students, Parents and Past Students. The Students and Staff look forward to hosting the day. I extend my best wishes to all students and coaches on the day and I thank Eddie Wallace, Jane Fawcett and Corey Balharry for the Administration of Sport at the College.

Pastoral Matters

Identity Matters “Stories teach by attracting rather than imposing. They capture the imagination and touch the heart. That’s why storytelling is such a natural way to engage and develop the emotional side of a child’s character” (Thomas Lickona, Educating for Character). This quote fits beautifully with our theme for this year – ‘Building on Strong Foundations’ and was the source of last week’s newsletter when looking at building our character. Our stories are important but so too are the broader stories of our school and our faith. We can learn a lot from reading the stories of the past and finding the message for today. In the winter edition of the Australian Catholics magazine, the focus is on women and the role that women have played and are playing within our Catholic story. I would like to share the story of Esther from the Bible. This story is shared by one of the young writers, Neve Mahoney, who contributed to this edition. After using her wits to become queen, Esther had to navigate a murder plot, court intrigue and discrimination. When she heard that the King was planning to kill the Jewish people, she decided to petition against it, even though speaking up and going to see the King uninvited could have cost her life. Like most rebel heroines, she had a great one liner in the face of overwhelming odds: ‘If I perish, I perish.’ Though initially overcome with fear, Esther played to the King’s ego, hosting two banquets for him and his advisor while ignoring the King’s offer of half the kingdom. Esther then asked for and received clemency for her people, while also bringing down the advisor who misled the King about the ‘dangers’ of the Jewish people. Esther is an example of a woman who used the rules of engagement to her advantage, but who was also willing to break them if necessary. She overcame her fear, putting her life and privilege on the line to combat the xenophobia that threatened the lives of her people. In a time where women were expected to be obedient, Esther became an influential political player. In today’s world, we can honour the legacy of Esther by standing up for what is right and confronting racist attitudes when we see them, even when it would be easier to stay silent. (Mahoney, Neve. “Heroic Women in the Bible - Esther.” Australian Catholics: Bringing Faith to Life May 2017: p11:- Hard copies of this magazine are avaialbe in the Faith and Justice Centre)

So the questions to ponder for this week are: How will we honour this legacy? Are we prepared to confront those in our midst when we see things are not right? Prayer: “Spirit of God, be in us and with us as we take a stand for those who are being persecuted for who they are and where they come from. Amen.” Carolyn Kenny Dean of Identity 4

Mental Illness:

Last week I had the good fortune to attend a Mental Health conference for two days. It increased my awareness of the types and causes of mental illness in children and provided some insight into the many causes. The pastoral team is now working on ways to better educate staff, students and parents on ways to handle issues in this area.

Did you know?

• The cost of mental health on the Australian economy is $60 Billion p.a. and the cost to businesses is $11 Billion p.a. •I in 4 teens may have a mental disorder at some stage but only I in 4 seek help • Some of the causes of mental health include child abuse, traumatic events, body image, homelessness, LGBT youth, Indigenous, and parents not seeking help due to lack of education and social standing

How do we manage:

o Developing resilience from a young age (a skill that can be practised and learned) o Working on our physical health o Having supportive teachers and a stable home life o Bouncing back after difficult times in life – helps growth mindset o Valuing our Self-Worth o Respecting your body o Getting enough sleep – major component o Surrounding ourselves with helpful people o Learning to deal with stress o Identifying strengths o Practicing mindfulness by quieting the mind o Setting realistic goals o Using good coping strategies o Getting help when you need o Talking to someone

• Video Games o 10% play more than 4 hours per day o Boys play 2-2 ½ times more than girls o Peaks at 11-14 years of age - Brain fails to develop executive function and cognition for things that count o DSM-5 Internet Gaming Disorder most common in males 12-14 o 5-10% problematic internet or game • Warning signs that a problem is occurring: withdrawal, irritability, tiredness and extended time in room. • Protection factors include: o No screen time at least one hour before sleep o Maintain a healthy and active lifestyle o Enforce limits to screen time and remove if necessary • Sleep – 11 hours per night for adolescents and 9 hours per night for adults. For the first time last Thursday, St. Laurence’s College was included as an exhibitor at the Royal Queensland Show Rural Discovery Day. The Urban Farm story was presented by Mrs Nataleen Kilburn (Head of Faculty of Humanities) and two of our young urban farmers, John Hunt (Yr 11) and Cale Dennis (Yr 8). The Rural Discovery Day provides a unique hands-on learning experience for visiting Primary students from throughout Brisbane as they discover how their food gets from paddock to plate. Held at the Brisbane Showgrounds since 2003, this day has proven to be an outstanding educational and entertaining event, giving city students a well-rounded education in primary production, all under one roof. There was a great deal of interest in The Urban Farm, as it was the only exhibit showcasing how food can be grown in an urban area that is constrained by limited space and natural resources. U

Senior Modern or Ancient History – Learn how to ‘get ahead’ of the Curve! Greg Sikich – Assistant Head of Humanities Faculty (History)

Business Insider Australia warns:

“People inevitably respond to financial pressure. With large and highly publicized demand for STEM graduates, many perfectly rational college students are going to go in that direction. Over time, there may be a glut, just like we’ve seen over the past few years in law.” “Even the hard core engineers take a class in their freshman year deliberately focused on developing their writing and analysis skills, plus 10 more in the humanities, social sciences, or arts before graduation. The job market certainly seems to like it.” Take Senior Modern or Ancient History. Become more well-rounded in your future endeavours!

Senior Modern or Ancient History – Transdisciplinary Skills = Future Greg Sikich – Assistant Head of Humanities Faculty (History)

Benjamin Miller and Fiona White from the University of Sydney report: “…double degree programs have significant untapped potential in preparing graduates for employment.

“The potential benefit, they argue, is that graduates develop “transdisciplinary skills” that are highly valued by employers.” “Transdisciplinary thinkers take a unique approach to solving problems. They draw information from diverse sources and seek collaborations to produce “socially robust knowledge”. Take Senior Modern or Ancient History in combination with science, maths, PE, business or technologies. Graduate with skills beyond your area of intended area of specialisation!
