Quote To have courage for whatever comes in life – everything lies in that.

Big Band 1 recently performed in the Southbank Piazza for Southbank Parkland’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. A large, enthusiastic crowd gathered as the band began to play. The students performed extremely well. Thanks to Mr Anders and students for a great show.

A note from the Principal On Assembly this week we were very lucky to have Mike Horan from the Senior Class of 1962 speak to the boys. Mike was College Captain in that year. We are aware of Mikes’ political career in the National Party and in State Politics. Indeed, Mike was the Leader of the National Party when in ‘opposition’. Ian McDonald’s book, ‘Lauries Inspirations’ highlights Mikes’ commitment to community service and his strong sense of family values. I hope that our boys listened to Mike’s messages and the values he demonstrates by how he lives his life. It was a great honour to have Mike visit us today. P&F EXECUTIVE On Monday the Parents and Friends Annual General Meeting was held. The new Executive team is as follows: President: Vice President: Treasurer: Secretary:

Michelle Prendergast Phillip McConville David Turnbull Erin Kavanagh and Louise Gardner

I wish to acknowledge the work of David Turnbull as the outgoing President and I look forward to working with him as Treasurer. I also thank Michelle and the other Executive members for their support of the College. HOGAN BUILDING REFURBISHMENT Tenders for our new primary precinct close next Tuesday. We hope to begin the building project as soon as possible after this date. There will be minimal disruption to classes over this time. STUDENT LEADERS The Head of Year 11, Ms Lisa Foster and the Assistant Head of Year, Mr Brad Kelman have spent many hours forming our Year 11 boys in the context of leadership in a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice Tradition. I believe that leadership fundamentally requires a focus on the needs of others. Leadership is not easy, nor is it a popularity contest. My hope is that all year 12 boys for 2018 accept the challenge of leadership. I recall many outstanding examples of student leadership over my time in education. However, leadership without reward and recognition with a focus on others is central to our culture. As parents this is how we lead, as Christians, this is how we lead and as Laurie’s gentlemen this is how we lead. I look forward to being involved in this continuing process as we appoint Prefects and Captains for 2018.

Identity Matters St Teresa of Avila is one of those interesting people in the Catholic Church whose life impacts our understanding of the world long after she lived. Edmund Rice used her writings and teachings as an example for his life along with other women of significance for him – Mary the mother of Jesus, his own mother who taught him much and nurtured his faith through prayer and action and Nano Nagle – the founder of the Presentation sisters. Each of these women are represented in the icon that displays Edmund Rice’s life. So why is she important?

“Teresa lived in an age of exploration as well as political, social, and religious upheaval. It was the 16th century, a time of turmoil and reform. She was born before the Protestant Reformation and died almost 20 years after the closing of the Council of Trent.

The gift of God to Teresa in and through which she became holy and left her mark on the Church and the world is threefold: She was a woman; she was a contemplative; she was an active reformer.

As a woman, Teresa stood on her own two feet, even in the man’s world of her time. She was “her own woman,” entering the Carmelites despite strong opposition from her father. She is a person wrapped not so much in silence as in mystery. Beautiful, talented, outgoing, adaptable, affectionate, courageous, enthusiastic, she was totally human. Like Jesus, she was a mystery of paradoxes: wise, yet practical; intelligent, yet much in tune with her experience; a mystic, yet an energetic reformer; a holy woman, a womanly woman. …

In 1970, the Church gave her the title she had long held in the popular mind: Doctor of the Church. She and St Catherine of Siena were the first women so honoured.”

Many of her writings and prayers inspire us still today. One of the most significant is shown below. This is what I believe that our young people and our staff do daily when they work for the good of others by living their faith through action. I leave you to contemplate these words over the coming week.

The Prayer of St Teresa of Avila Christ has no body now on earth but mine; Mine are the only hands with which He can do His work. Mine are the only feet with which He can go about the world; Mine are the only eyes through which His compassion can shine forth upon a troubled world. Christ has no body on earth but mine.’

Congratulations to Old Boy Patrick Nowland for forming the Brown Snake Brass Quintet. Their inaugural performance last Sunday at St. Ignatius Church Toowong was phenomenal and raised valuable funds for Jesuit mission. Patrick is one of several St. Laurence’s College alumni studying at the Queensland Conservatorium. When at the college, Patrick was a member of Concert Band, Big Band, Brotherhood and Big Brotherood. He also played basketball, coached and was a referee. We are excited to announce that on Wednesday morning next week the Brotherhood and Little Brotherhood will be joining together before school to do a recording for Oxford University Press. Professor Martin Ashley, of Edgehill University in England, contacted Dr. Young and requested that the college assist with creating recordings of new music for men’s chorus. Edgehill University hosts the Keep Boys Singing Website and is recognized as a centre for study in changing male voices. We thank the boys for their commitment to maintaining high standards which are being internationally recognized. 5

This week in Ms Joy’s Year 10 History Class The Year 10s are examining the ways people have fought for the rights we have today in the our unit, What Rights? What Freedoms? This week we take a closer look at Civil Rights Activists in America and the different forms of protest used to fight against segregation and oppression. Some of the peaceful forms of protest we are looking at include bus boycotts, freedom rides, and sit-ins. We are also looking at events like the March on Washington, 28 August 1963, where Martin Luther King, Jr delivered his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.

Old Boy Presentations Since the commencement of Term 4, the College has had the privilege of presentations from a number of Old Boys. On Friday 6 October, Chris Rogan from the Class of 1990 spoke with the Year 12 students about his personal journey from where they are now to his current position at Partner with PWC. Several of the Chris’ insights of challenging yourself, taking educated risks and being respectful reaffirmed many of the teachings currently communicated through the College pastoral program. Thank you Chris for your time and important messages to our students. This week, representatives of the Old Boys’ Association and Old Boys’ Foundation also spoke with the Year 12 cohort about the opportunities available to them once they finish in November. The transition from student to Old Boy is one of many opportunities including networking, socialising and of giving back to those less fortunate. Thank you to Antony Raiteri (Class of 1984) for representing the Old Boys’ Association and Allan Layton (Class of 1971) for presenting on behalf of the Old Boys’ Foundation. The week concluded with this week’s Building on Strong Foundations’ Old Boy Mike Horan AM presenting at the full school assembly. An Old Boy from the Class of 1962, Mike was able to draw upon his own experiences at the College and throughout his illustrious career in politics and farming, to provide inspiration for our students. Thank you Mike for your insights.
