It has certainly been a week for children being out and about, with visits to Hardwick Hall, the Merchant Adventurer’s Hall, York Theatre Royal and local churches. Mrs Fynn organised an excellent House Corgi Cushion Race to help us celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. Disclaimer: no corgis were injured during the course of this event.

Some of our J5 pupils took part in the St Peter’s Physics Olympics on Wednesday; a fabulous event organised by the staff at St Peter’s. We all enjoyed listening to the Yorkshire Rows speaking to us in assembly all about their transatlantic challenge. Hopefully it may inspire some of you to go along to the Guy Fawkes boat club, on a Saturday, to learn to row with other parents – rowing across the Atlantic isn’t necessarily the end result of joining the club.

Mr Humphries organised a Maths Challenge for Year 4 and Year 5 pupils from 15 local primary schools, along with some of our own pupils. There was such a tremendous buzz in the Shepherd Hall as they were all engrossed in working together to solve tricky problems. Staying on the maths theme, it was good to see quite a few of you at the maths lecture, given by Rob Eastaway, as part of the free public lecture series, on Friday evening at St Peter’s. He was highly entertaining and passionate about maths and its everyday application.

Congratulations to Angus and Toby on winning the HMC North of England U11 Tennis competition.

Will and Anna Coggrave made the long journey down to Kent to compete in the IAPS National Triathlon Championships. There were over 440 competitors. Will finished as the fastest Year 8 boy which meant that overall he came 2nd in the competition, which is a fantastic achievement.

Well done to all the children who took their LAMDA drama exams this week, as well as our musicians who have had music exams – I know they have put a lot of time and effort into preparing for them.

The 1st XI cricket team came back from Ampleforth College on Sunday as the winners of the Worsley Cup.

I’m looking forward to Sports Day tomorrow, always such a great House event and brilliantly organised by our sports team. This will be Mrs Dyson’s last Sports Day so it will be tinged with a little sadness. Andy Falconer Master

Habits of Learning

My thanks also to Mr Sharp and our grounds staff for organising such a brilliant U12 Super 8s cricket festival yesterday.

No Time To Showtime

Places are filling up! Are you looking for a lively, fun-packed, activity-filled couple of days in August to break the monotony of the summer holidays? After its success last year Mrs Holmes and Mrs Spencer are again running a two day course on Wednesday 24 August and Thursday 25 August at St Olave’s, 9.00am–4.00pm. Activities will include singing, dancing and other performances. There will be a short presentation to parents at the end of the second day. All books, DVDs and any other resources borrowed from the library should be returned by Friday 24 June. Charges may be made to replace any items not returned. Please do encourage your children to return their items on time. Although there is no borrowing from the library after 24 June until we return in September, pupils may of course read books in the library, and can bring in books from home to read during the last two weeks of term. J5 pupils should return their library loans before going to Lakeside. Thank you. Susie Lockett

Animal Fundraising On Saturday 2 July, the club is organising its first ‘Let’s go walkies’. The plan is to take a short sponsored dog walk, after Saturday school. Please join us, with your dogs on a lead, for a short walk around Clifton at 12.15pm. Sponsorship forms for this event are still available from Reception, or see Katie Coates in J2. We will go ahead with the walk whatever the weather. A teddy tombola and cake stall will take place on Friday 24 June at lunchtime in the Reception area. Please fill the box in Reception with any new/pre-loved animal toys. The tombola will take place in the Entrance area at lunchtime with an animal themed raffle too. Raffle tickets – 20 pence per ticket. Please bake cakes and biscuits for the cake stall and bring them into school on Friday morning. Cakes will be sold for 50 pence each.

Mathematics This week Alice McWalter, Martha Dunsmore, Jack Raper and Charlie Hughes joined pupils from other local primary schools for the next round in the programme of ISSP Maths Masterclasses at Archbishop of York's CE Junior School. The follow up session is in two week’s time. Pupils form Year 7 and Year 8 attended the UK Maths Trust Junior Competition earlier in the term. Overall we were awarded 13 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze certificates. Congratulations to everyone who took part in this prestigious national competition. Harry Tsang was awarded the certificate for the best result in Year 7, Sam McKeown was awarded the certificate for the best result in Year 8 and also overall best result in School. Five pupils who scored high enough to qualify, then entered the follow-up round, ‘Junior Kangaroo’, this week. Andy Hanson, Sam McKeown, Kingsley Luo, Max Hollinrake and Will Coggrave eagerly await the result.

ST PETER’S SUMMER SCULLING COURSE 2016 Once again we are delighted to offer a Summer Holiday Sculling Course for J4 and J5 pupils at St Olave’s and pupils starting in St Peter’s Third Form. There have been a large number of expressions of interest already and details are set out below. I do realise some of you may not be able to attend because of holidays. Don’t worry, there will be other rowing opportunities and you are always welcome at the Boat Club. Three important points 1. Numbers are restricted so please apply early 2. Please do not send your son/daughter if they do not wish to learn to row. We have on occasion had the course used for child care which is not its purpose! 3. Priority will be given to next year’s Third Form, J5 and J4 in that order. Dates: Tuesday 2nd to Friday 5th August inclusive Times 9 am to 4 pm daily (provisional) Aims of the Course To experience sculling, with particular emphasis on safety and the basics of crew and individual sculling technique, to build confidence on and off the water and have a lot of fun. What do I get on the course? Safety Although rowing is a very safe sport we always take safety very seriously. During the course we will initially spend some time on safety drills on and off the water, including helping others. Coaches There will be a very high coach to rower ratio, likely to be no more than 6 rowers per coach. Coaches will all be experienced rowers and coaches, including some Fifth and Sixth Form rowers. Apart from that the course will include: Swimming test and capsize drill (in the pool) Sculling technique, theoretical and practical Knowledge of boats and equipment Correct lifting techniques Use of rowing machines Basic circuit training Watching DVDs on technique and World Class Rowing Discussion of how athletes should look after their food and drink By the end of the course we expect all the young scullers to have mastered the basics of crew sculling.

Pre-course requirements You must be able to swim 100m in sports kit i.e. T-Shirt and shorts Cost £165 (inc VAT) per pupil for the whole course to include lunches, course T-shirt and water bottle. Lunches will tend to be high carbohydrate dishes like pasta and pudding to keep energy levels up. After lunch we watch films, including rowing films of top crews, whilst lunch settles. Exceptional circumstances If the river is in flood and therefore dangerous, we can run the course for about 2 days with plenty of land-based work. After that we would have to finish early and expect parents to be understanding. In such an unlikely eventuality there would be a partial refund of the course fee. The course is always over-subscribed. Places will be allocated taking into account the order in which applications are received and the ages of the rowers. The course will be limited to 38 this year. What is St Peter’s School Boat Club like? The Boat Club is a co-educational club where everyone helps and supports everyone else, whatever their age. We currently have 110 rowers from Third to Upper Sixth Forms and at St Olave’s there is a J4 opportunity in the summer term, an after-school club in autumn and summer and a J5 sport option on Thursdays in the summer. Rowers are able to take part in other sports like rugby, hockey and netball. We wish to help anyone who wishes to learn to row, whatever their standard. If you have high ambitions you will be interested to know that our rowers, girls and boys, have in the last 11 years won 29 Great Britain vests and several World Championship medals. For more information, please click on https://www.stpetersyork.org.uk/boatclub What do I do next? Please fill in the form below asap and send it with a cheque as indicated.
