NEWSLETTER

TIMOTHY JAY LITTLE PRINCIPAL

January/February 2017

From the principal: Welcome to 8th Grade Parents With this issue you will begin receiving our monthly parent newsletter for the remainder of the year. We would like to officially welcome you to our Schaumburg High School family. Incredibly, your sons and daughters are only one semester away from entering high school. As you can see from the contents of the newsletter, we try to provide pertinent information for parents and take some time to recognize student accomplishments. The registration process for incoming freshmen has already begun. To date, the following items should have been submitted to our Student Services Department: proof of residency, original birth certificate, and master enrollment form. Your student should have also taken the PSAT 8/9 Placement Test and the Career Cruising Matchmaker Activity and received results for both, as well as have identified elective courses which complement their identified Career Clusters. If you have questions about any aspects of your student’s transition to SHS, feel free to contact the Student Services Department at (847) 755-4630. We welcome your questions. Providing a quality education is best achieved with a unified effort of parents, teachers, students, and staff. I encourage you to join us in this partnership. Together we will continue the tradition of excellence that makes great things happen at Schaumburg High School! Sincerely,

Timothy Jay Little Principal

Go Saxons!

The winter season brings some exciting times, especially during the basketball season. As we progress through this season, fans are reminded to support all teams. We have great school spirit and it should be exhibited in a positive fashion. Just as our athletes exhibit good sportsmanship, so should our fans. When cheering, cheer for our team not against the other team. Sportsmanship is important both on the playing field and in the stands. Fans are also reminded that at basketball games, there are designated band as well as student (Saxon stronghold) sections. We encourage our students to show their school spirit, which might mean that they stand and cheer throughout the entire game. We provide ample seating on both sides of the gymnasium so that non-students can view the game without having to stand. All are encouraged to come out and support all teams in a spirited but positive manner.

Selective Service Registration Men:

When you reach 18, you become an adult. With that new status come rewards and responsibilities. One of the first responsibilities you’ll have is to register with Selective Services.

Why:

Registration is a way of keeping a list of names in the event of a national emergency. When you turn 18, you have to add your name to this list. By having this list, our nation would save six valuable weeks in mobilizing our manpower in a national emergency. You help to keep our country strong.

How:

By filling out a simple registration form that asks only for your name, address, telephone number, social security number, and date of birth. Hand the card to the postal clerk, show some identification, and sign the card.

Where:

The school registrar, at any U.S. Post Office or the Internet at www.sss.gov.

When:

Within a month of your 18th birthday. (You may wish to fill out a registration form up to 120 days before age 18 if you are applying for a student loan or job-training benefits.)

Who:

All young men – including those who would qualify for conscientious objector status or other classification (veteran, minister, physically disqualified, hardship). Because there are no plans to return to a draft in the foreseeable future, there is no need to classify men at this time.

Registration:

It’s quick. It’s easy. And it’s the law.

You Must Register to be Eligible For Most Federal Student Loans and Job Training Benefits.

Blessings in a Backpack

Blessings in a Backpack is a nonprofit program that partners with schools across America to ensure impoverished students are fed on the weekends throughout the school year. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program. Schaumburg High School and Rotary Club of Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates partnered in 2013 to start the program at Schaumburg High School. We are currently in our third school year in partnering with Blessings in a Backpack. We have the capacity to serve 40 students. Students are selected one of three ways: McKinney-Vento homeless status, free and reduced lunch program eligibility, and staff referrals. How you can get involved: Food donations can be brought to the Student Services Office. • Granola and fruit breakfast bars • Cereal • Oatmeal • Chef Boyardee Ravioli, Beefaroni, Spaghetti and Meatballs • Mashed potatoes • Mac & Cheese • Canned fruit • Bottled drinks like Gatorade and Vitamin Water • Fruit Snacks • Cheese and crackers, Goldfish crackers • Snack pack pudding • Pasta • Instant Rice • Variety pack potato chips **Please note food items must be new and unopened. Expired food cannot be accepted.** If you have any further questions please contact Kristal King, School Social Worker, at [email protected] or (847) 755-4630.

The “Magic Closet” was established in November 2005, as a means to serve our students who are in need of clothing items throughout the school year. The Magic Closet accepts donations of brand new and/or slightly worn articles of clothing such as shirts, jeans, khakis, gym shoes, coats, hats, mittens, earmuffs, etc. Gift cards to stores that offer a variety of items and are in close proximity of Schaumburg High School such as Kohl’s, Ross, Target, and Wal-Mart are also welcomed. Gift cards in $10.00 and $15.00 increments are recommended, as they allow the flexibility to serve the needs of our students in a more effective way. Thank you in advance for your kindness, generosity, and willingness to help our students in need at Schaumburg High School. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact Lisa Becker in the Student Service Office at extension 4645 or at [email protected].

May 1 deadline

Parents of seniors should be aware that most colleges subscribe to the May deadline advocated by professional associations. This means that students should have made a final declaration of intent to enroll in the college of their choice by May 1. Enrollment deposits and housing deposits should be paid by this date. After May 1, colleges may cancel student admission requests and go to waiting lists of other eligible students. Please remember to notify the colleges which your son or daughter will not attend so that those seats can be given to other students. If you have questions about this policy, please contact your son or daughter’s counselor.

A.C.T. /S.A.T. Test Preparation for juniors The best preparation for college entrance exams is a challenging program in high school attacked with diligence. Students who develop good study habits attend to class work, and stretch themselves to do the best that they are capable of in college-bound classes and are preparing themselves daily to do well on college entrance exams. A number of review programs are offered in our school, the district, and in the private sector. These programs have met with varying success and their degree of usefulness seems to be related to the degree of commitment with which individual students pursue them. In addition, A.C.T. /S.A.T. preparation classes are offered at Schaumburg High School in February, March and April after school, two days a week. There is no fee, and the late activity bus is available.
