ALPINE SCHOOL APPLICATION SUCCESS Irymple Secondary College is pleased to announce that in 2019, 6 Year 9 students will have the opportunity to attend an Alpine School campus for a 9 week period (one term). Our successful application allows us to send a team of 3 males and 3 females (6 students) to the Gnurad-Gundidj Campus, which is adjacent to Mount Noorat near Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District. This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for 6 of our students to experience working with 7 other teams from city and country schools around Victoria. While attending the Alpine School they will develop leadership and survival skills in a variety of tasks throughout the term and work towards the implementation of a school or community project on their return. We will be seeking expressions of interest from students and families in the coming weeks. An application and interview process will determine the successful students who will attend this school. More information can be found on the Alpine School website. www.alpineschool.vic.edu.au Queries can be directed to Kate Douglas or Alison Callahan

My time at Snowy River My name is Mikayla Kerslake and I’ve been fortunate enough to attend the school for student leadership 9 week program at the Snowy River Campus in 2018. Forty Year 9 students all across Victoria come together to live and learn new skills and meet lifetime mates. I am one of 6 year 9 students from Irymple Secondary College who has been lucky enough to get given this life changing experience. I wanted to come to this school so that I not only can improve on my leadership skills but also to have a better understanding of myself. We 6 students’ vision for being here is to become more responsible, confident, and independent. We hope to gain lifelong friends, leadership skills, life skills and learn about ourselves, more specifically our beliefs/values and where we fit in society. Every school here gets to create a community learning project (CLP) that they run when they get back to their own community. My school has decided to go the aged care next to my school to do movement to music and activities with the elderly. Our vision is to bring happiness to the older community by including them with the younger community and doing activities. We hope this will encourage people to have more respect for the older community in the future. Some highlights from being here so far would be going caving and Expo 1. Caving was good fun because we got to get off of campus and explore wild and show caves. It was good to get out of my comfort zone and be pushed not only physically but also mentally. Expo 1 was really good because it was a time to get away and spend some quality time with my team. Being here at the SSL is so much different to a normal school. First of all, there are only 40 year 9 students that you’re living and learning with. There are many different roles and duties that we all take on here at the SRC. One of these is the student leader. Each day two people let everyone know what they are doing for the day, they run headcounts and make goals for the whole community each day. Another one is duties. We all get a few duties each day. It could be anything from washing dishes, sweeping the floor or checking on the chooks. Students get the opportunity to run evening classes. This gives us the chance to take on leading roles and step out of our comfort zones. We can also help run activities from sports, cooking theme nights and big events like CLP day. When we first arrived here at the SRC to start our 9-week program we got given a room with another person from a different school. The whole purpose of this was so that we could become closer with people outside of our school and friendship groups. I found this really beneficial because it’s pushed me out of my comfort zone but in a good way. The meals here are really good; we eat 5 times a day to keep up all of our nutrients that we lose and I love all of the food that we’ve been given so far. We’ve been on our first Expo a few weeks ago and it has changed me into a better person. We did a 30km bike ride one day and then a 20km hike along the beach next. It pushed my patience, dedication and my physical ability. It made my Expo team to come closer together and going on Expo 2 this week is going to put us all to the test again. I’d recommend this life changing opportunity to anyone who gets a chance.

RUOK DAY On Tuesday we have recognised RUOK Day in our respective form groups with SRC reps explaining what RUOK Day was about and reminding students how to access our wellbeing team at school if they need to. At recess our school nurse, Bev, and Dr in Schools nurse, Mel, distributed icy poles, whilst our SRC students provided yellow ribbon for students to wear. A big thank you to Anthony Ryan and Year 9 students who made our RUOK buddy seat out of recycled timber!

SPRING CARNIVAL AND COLOUR RUN We have a busy last day of term planned with the program including our traditional school fundraiser– Spring Carnival. Forms are busy planning their stalls with lots of activities and food stalls for students to choose from. We appreciate all the support that our school families and community gives us to help this day happen. All profits from the day will go towards new classroom furniture for our newly renovated classrooms. The Carnival will run in the morning from 9:30am until 12:30pm. Students will be able to buy food, drinks and participate in activities for various prices set by each form. Students can exchange their cash on the day for 50c tokens to spend at the stalls. There will be prizes for the form that raises the most money and the form that has the best looking stall. It will be followed by the Spring Idol talent quest involving students and staff and at 1:30pm our Colour Run will kick off. First, second and third place in the talent quest will also receive cash prices ($20, $15 & $10). The Colour Run will then kick off at 1:30pm at on our front oval. We look forward to seeing all students get involved. They can walk or run the course. If any parents would like to get involved please call the office on 5024 5407, but even if you can’t help, we’d love to see you down there on the day cheering the kids on… Everyone’s invited! Students are encouraged to wear an old/cheap white t-shirt for the colour run as they will get covered in coloured powder during the event. They will need a towel/ washer and a change of clothes for going home – especially if they are catching the bus. They won’t be allowed to get on the buses covered in coloured powder.

For three weeks prior to the testing dates they were given revision on all the topics covered in Naplan, some they had not covered for several months. We made a promise that any student who made a significant improvement on their score from Year 7 would be rewarded with a special lunch. Congratulations to the following students.
