Students write their way to first place

Two Northern Lights College students were awarded first place in an essay-writing competition through the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Rajbir Kaur, a student at the Fort St. John Campus, is the 2016 winner of the International Student Award, with her essay entitled Facebook Behaviour among Millennials: To What Extent is it Explained by Narcissistic Attitudes? Kaur was born in India. In 2010, Kaur left India for Spain where her husband already resided. After their son was born, they moved to Fort St John. Kaur completed her first year in the Social Services Worker Diploma Program at Northern Lights College. After graduation, she will continue with a degree in social work through UNBC. Kaur was inspired on this topic during her English class on narcissism, when she noticed the correlation to Facebook behaviour. Rebecca Chute, a student at the Dawson Creek Campus, is the 2016

winner of the UNBC Award, with her essay The Pornographic Polemic: The Objectification and Inferiority of Female Comic Book Characters. Chute attended high school in Dawson Creek. In the Dual Credit Program, first year university transfer courses at Northern Lights College she earned credits toward a degree in psychology. Her inspiration came from her interest in comic books and superheroes, where she felt that women and men were not represented or portrayed equally. In her essay, she applied academic research and her own analysis of a genre that she cares deeply about. Other prize-winners and runners-up for the International Student Award are: First runner-up: Gagandeep Sing Kulaar for the essay Making New Roads for Women: Role of Government, Non-Governmental Organizations and Self-help Groups in Indian Women’s Empowerment. Second runner-up: Don Vigis Abraham for the essay Faking and

Coaching: A Critical Examination of the Reliability of Traditional Integrity Tests. UNBC Award runners-up are: First runner-up: Kendra Michel for the essay A Dené Tha Story: The Telling from One Girl about her Family and People, and her Hope for their Future. Second runner-up: Jayna Kassian for the essay Poisoning your mind: Social Media and its Effects on the Development of Eating Disorders. The winners and runners-up for the Wanka History Prize are: Winner: Katherine Fang for the essay The Election of 1911: The End of the Long-Triumphant Liberalism. First runner-up: Alexandra Windsor for the essay Cultural Genocide by the Indian Residential Schools in Canada. Second runner-up: Marie Weitzel for the essay Hicks to Horticulturalists: The Development of Agriculture in Canada.

Various departments from Northern Lights College took part in the annual Fall Fair Parade in Dawson Creek, showing a great display of what the college offers.

One float featured Theresea Gladue and Rubina Dhaliwal, both of whom have radio shows on Peace FM. Hosting Theresa’s Bannock Hour on Sunday at 7 pm, Gladue waved eagerly to the crowds while the host of Rubina’s Bollywood Show, airing Friday at 6  pm, sat colourfully dressed at the back of the float.

Another float was pulled by a vehicle used in the Heavy Mechanical Trades, and featured a variety of equipment that NLC uses as teaching aides.
