Introduction Nottingham Night Owls is a student run project aiming to improve the night time safety for students in Nottingham. This progress report is a summary of Nottingham Night Owls achievements since the first shift ran on 28/09/15 –Dec 2016. During this period, Nottingham Night Owls has trained 232 Student – some of these have now graduated so Night Owls currently has 171 active volunteers. The Night Owls run patrols on Wednesday and Thursday nights and will begin patrolling on Mondays on the 27/02/2017. Nottingham Night Owls are also beginning to work with other cities to expand the project, allowing other universities to support their students in this way. None of this would be possible without our dedicated volunteers giving up their time to help their fellow students. If you have any questions about this report or any aspect of Nottingham Night Owls please feel free to get in touch: Night Owls: Email: [email protected] Website: www.nottinghamnightowls.co.uk Maddy Ellis – Coordinator Email: [email protected] Mobile: 07890529049 2

Shift Log Statistics Litter There is a range of reasons why Nottingham Night Owls collects litter. Primarily having litter such as cans and glass on the streets can be a hazard. Another reason we collect the litter is that there is a vast amount of litter created by student night life, removing this litter will improve the relationship between the two universities and the city. We want to help make the city a safer and cleaner place. Since we started Night Owls: We have collected a total of 1226 glass bottles since we started shifts and a total of 4135 items of litter. Last Academic Term: Below is a graph showing the amount and types of litter our volunteers have collected during each shift in the most recent academic term.

Volunteer Hours Since we started Night Owls: We currently aim to have a minimum of 2 patrols per shift and at least 4 people in each patrol group including 1 exec member or an experienced volunteer supporting each patrol group from the office (Minimum of 8 volunteers per shift max of 15). The shifts are 5 hours long (23:30-04:30), we have therefore added a total of 2135 hours of volunteer support to the streets of Nottingham between since starting shifts. These numbers will be increasing soon as we begin running shifts on Mondays. Last Academic Term: Below is a graph of the volunteer hours from our last academic term:

Assistance given to students Whilst on shifts the volunteers chat to lots of people and give out many supplies such as snacks, water, spikies (Small plastic caps to prevent drinks getting spiked), foil blankets and various other useful items. The volunteers interact with countless students; we have found that even their presence can be a helpful tool to reduce risks in town. For example, if the volunteers stand near an incident such as a fight or an argument, without the volunteers having to interfere at all the situation quickly diffuses due to the presence of a group of people wearing high vis uniforms. The next page contains a list of all the items contained in the volunteer’s rucksacks.
