PEO RESPONDS TO ELLIOT LAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FINANCE MINISTER ANNOUNCES FALL ECONOMIC STATEMENT FOR NOVEMBER 14 FORMER ENGINEERING FIRM AND PRINCIPAL FINED FOR IMPROPER USE OF ENGINEERING TITLE FIRST ELECTED FEMALE ENGINEER OFFERS INSIGHTS TO STUDENTS AT PEO STUDENT CONFERENCE 2016

BREAKING NEWS PEO RESPONDS TO ELLIOT LAKE RECOMMENDATIONS Angela Gismondi of the Daily Commercial News wrote about PEO’s efforts to address the Elliot Lake Mall Collapse recommendations on November 7. Doloris Perizzolo and Lucie Aylwin were killed on June 23, 2012, when a portion of the rooftop parking deck at the Algo Mall Centre crashed onto the two floors below. Commissioner of the Elliot Lake Inquiry Paul Bélanger released his report on October 15, 2014. It called for extensive changes to Ontario's building inspection system. According to the report, the incident was the result of years of neglect and "human failure."

In the article , PEO Registrar Gerard McDonald, P.Eng., identified that there are nine recommendations in the inquiry report that affect the engineering profession. "We're working on the issues we can work on," said Mr. McDonald. "We want to have them as ready for implementation as they can be, but some require legislative and regulatory changes and until those changes come through, we can't implement them. […] We've notified the attorney general of this and they are currently considering what changes might be required to our act and other acts with respect to the other recommendations." FORMER ENGINEERING FIRM AND PRINCIPAL FINED FOR IMPROPER USE OF ENGINEERING TITLE It was reported in the January 22 issue of the GLP Weekly (https://goo.gl/cAzTPc), that Emmanuel de Guzman and Falcon Group were ordered by the Superior Court of Justice to stop presenting itself as an engineering company. It could no longer use the words “engineer,” “engineering,” or any other term, title or description that will lead to the belief that it may provide professional engineering services to the public.

By June, Falcon Group and Mr. De Guzman had still failed to comply and have been convicted of four counts of breaching the Professional Engineers Act and fined $10,000. Falcon Group was found guilty of two counts for offering professional engineering services through its website and using restricted terms, titles and descriptions in a LinkedIn profile without a Certificate of Authorization from Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). De Guzman, as a director and officer of the corporation, was found guilty of two counts for authorizing, permitting or consenting to the offences. De Guzman has never been licensed as a professional engineer in Ontario. Nick Hambleton, PEO’s Associate Counsel of Regulatory Compliance, represented PEO in this matter.
