Although newly selected for this position, I am not new to Alaska or the Kenai Peninsula. From 1990 to 1995, I resided along with my parents and three siblings in Nikiski. In 1995 I graduated from Nikiski High School and left the Peninsula for college. After a few years of travel, study and the start of my own family, I returned to the Peninsula in 1999. From 2000 to 2011, I lived and worked across the great state of Alaska in communities both on and off the road system. In August I relocated my family to the Peninsula and I am excited to be back in the 4-H community that gave me so many awesome opportunities as a youth. I am a second generation 4-H’er, with over 8 years of 4-H youth member experience, and I

and Jeannine Morse for recognizing 4-H’ers of the Month with your generous contribution of $50 savings bonds.

I have professional experience in social marketing, journalism, education, non-profit community organizing, international student exchange, social work and behavioral health. I also have past experience working in the commercial fishing, fish processing, transportation, private security, hospitality and food service industries. I am passionate about healthy youth, families and communities and I am excited to see what the new 4-H project year will bring. Since I am writing this greeting in the Pledger, I would like to close by pledging to commit my hands, heart, head and health to working with you to make the best 4-H district in Alaska even better! I look forward to meeting each and every member, leader and supporter in the coming months, and encourage you to drop in any time for a conversation. Sincerely, Jason Floyd, LBSW 4-H and Youth Development Agent, Kenai Peninsula District [email protected]

Makayla Derkevorkian is making a name for herself in the 4-H world. Hence, she is the November 2011 4-H’er of the month. She had a slow start in 2011, but caught up quickly. At the fair, she distinguished herself by taking very good care of her goats and rabbits and won the Abby Ala Herdsmanship Award, which was sponsored by Aaron and Jeannine Morse, the same people who sponsor the $50-a-month savings bond given to each winner of the 4-H’er of the Month Award. Makayla also earned the goat showmanship award and went on to become Master Large Livestock Showmanship Champion. Makayla rides horses and is helping get the Midnight Sun Riders horse club active again. She will prove over the next year that she is a champion 4-H’er of the month! Bang Up Club Greetings from the Bang Up Club! We will begin having meetings once Trace is done with swim season. This year we have had several families show an interest in concentrating on a Lego robotics program. So let me know if you're interested and I'll get our meeting information to you. We may have our meetings at the Sterling Elementary School as one of our parents has access to the building on weekends. Thanks everybody! We're so glad you've joined 4-H again! Beth and Trace Braxling, 262-1887 or [email protected] Kasilof Sewing and Cooking Club The Kasilof Sewing Club will be meeting Saturday, November 12 from noon to 3 p.m. This will be a class on beginning crochet, so bring your favorite ball of thick yarn and a medium-size crochet hook. The Kasilof Cooking Club will meet Saturday, November 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will be making two different types of soup and two different types of casseroles. Please bring your record book. Thanks, Mickey

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 3 – 6 p.m. NINILCHIK FAIRGROUNDS - The Trail Blazers official meeting for 2012 4-H sign-up. See you all there!! We will have a potluck so bring a dish to share. The club will provide plates, utensils and drinks. Should be fun and I look forward to seeing those of you I haven't seen in a while and meeting some new faces!! Parents, please call 398-4207 with any questions. Horses and Livestock Unlimited Horse and Livestock Unlimited met October 9. We picked designs for our new club t-shirts and had nominations for new officers. We are looking at doing some leatherwork in the near future and looked over some cool kits. On October 25 we went to Solid Rock Bible Camp and had fun at the Hay Maze. All local 4-H’ers were invited to join us. Our next meeting will be November 6; we hope to be starting some leatherworking projects and elect our new officers for the coming year, and if all goes well our t-shirts should be in. Shooting Sports organizational meeting will be held on Thursday, November 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the CES office.

JML Organizational Meeting If you would like to participate in the Junior Market Livestock program this year, you are going to need to attend the organizational meeting on Monday, November 14 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building on K-Beach Road. Steer Possession Date Possession date for steers this year is January 1, 2012. Remember to turn in your intent to sell form and

pictures. Western Regional Leaders Forum is coming up January 12-15, 2012! This is an opportunity for 4-H Leaders to advance their learning while having fun visiting out west in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Check out this website for further details or to register: http://4-h.uwyo.edu/WRLF_12.asp Small Game Hunt for Youth The 4-H Shooting Sports Program in partnership with the Kenai Peninsula Chapter of Safari Club International (SCI) and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Hunter Education Program is once again inviting youngsters 16 years of age and younger (minimum age of 10) to participate in an organized small game hunting experience. Each weekend from November 1 through the end of December, pairs of certified mentors of the Hunter Education Program and 4-H certified mentors will escort pairs of youths for one day of supervised small game hunting. Parents and guardians are welcome to participate. SCI will supply the firearms and instruction, ammunition, transportation and lunch. ADF&G’s Hunter Education Program will supply orange vests and hearing and eye protection. If not already certified, participating youth will be encouraged to sign up for an upcoming Hunter Education Program certification class and the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. This mentoring program is a great learning opportunity for area youth interested in Alaska’s hunting heritage. For more information or to sign up, call either the UAF Cooperative Extension office at 262-5824, Tom and Helen Netschert at 260-7758 or ADFG at 262-9368.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Nancy Veal, our beloved 4-H agent. She will surely be missed by us. I ask that you ALL show up for her retirement party on Saturday, November 19 (FYI-her birthday is the next day). It will be the same place, time and menu as the AWARDS NIGHT: Kenai Peninsula College from 2-4 p.m. Please bring finger food and come prepared to share 4-H stories you have as a member or leader…I know there are plenty of them out there. As our new agent, Jason Floyd, takes over the large task as 4-H agent, I ask that you welcome him with great optimism and give him support as well as any ideas you may have on enlarging the 4-H program. Introduce yourselves often so he can get to know you.

I look forward to this new year with 4-H on the Peninsula and encourage you to come to the council meetings so you can keep on track of all that’s going on. The meetings are not long and it is another opportunity to share your input and ideas for the future, as well as hear Jason’s ideas. The next council meeting will be Monday, November 21 at the CES office at 6:30 p.m. We would love to have you come. Thanks! Sincerely, Forrest Nelson
