Kingsland News November 2017 Dear Readers, Julie continues to recuperate following her planned surgery which took place just after she wrote the front-page article for the October Kingsland News. In a statement she says, “I am extremely thankful for all the prayer and care that I have received over the last few weeks, thankful to have come out the other side still me, thankful for the amazing things that the NHS can do, thankful to be alive and kicking and like many people thankful to have been made starkly aware of what is important in life – family and faith. It will be a while before I am fully functioning, but I am around and will no doubt bump into many of you as I journey back to full health and the doctors let me loose on you all again. Please continue to support Jean Barbour and Dave Davies, Lorna Noon and Joc Whitbread (Churchwardens and the deputies) who are shouldering the responsibility until then. Every blessing to you all, Rev Julie Read.”

Churchwarden Jean Barbour has also recently undergone surgery, and we are very thankful that this has been successful. Jean is now recovering well. Meanwhile a dedicated team continues the work and services of the Church. On October 12th the school Harvest Thanksgiving in the morning and the evening service for the Church were held. We are all grateful for the splendid Harvest Supper we enjoyed – thanks Pam, Joc, Heather and helpers!. In November there will be the Service of Remembrance at 10.50 am on Sunday 12th; after the service on Sunday 26th there will be a Turkey Lunch, and a fundraising Soup and Pudding Lunch will be held at Gable Croft on Saturday 4th. December is rapidly approaching, and, with it, the need to prepare first for Advent beginning on Sunday 3rd, and then for Christmas. Details of planned services will be in the December Kingsland News, and we look forward to seeing you at some or all of them. David Noon (Editor)

Both recordings have now been transferred to a CD and although the recording quality is not quite up to modern standards the singing is absolutely delightful. Were you there? Did you sing? Would you like a copy of the CD in exchange for a few bob for school funds? Then phone Margaret Taylor at 01568 780243 and it will be yours!

Voices from the Past Margaret Taylor, who taught at Kingsland School in the 1970's, and who now lives in Bircher, has recently unearthed a cassette tape on which have been recorded two performances made by the children of both Kingsland and Eardisland schools. Margaret Chappell was headteacher at Eardisland when it closed in 1979 and still lives in Monkland. Both Margarets were involved in the performances - and are still good friends! One recording, made in the summer of 1978 in the Coronation Hall, is of the Kingsland junior pupils singing 'Johnny Appleseed'. The other, sung jointly by the pupils of both Kingsland and Eardisland schools in December 1977 and recorded in Kingsland Church is 'A Christmas Journey'. Light Up Kingsland - Christmas 2017 As you may recall from last year, Kingsland Flower Show Committee acquired a number of battery operated, timer controlled outdoor festive Christmas lights. It would be nice if, once again, we could replicate what Pembridge do through their village by hanging sets of lights on trees/shrubs in front gardens in our village, especially along North Road and Longford. We hope that as many of you as possible will be willing to join in this festive activity by borrowing a set of lights from us, particularly if you are a resident of the “main drag”. The lights will be available from early December from Caroline Southgate (01568 708010) or Janet Vaughan (01568 708760) so please contact one of them to book your set of lights. It will be on a “first come – first served” basis. You are earnestly encouraged to support this event.

Kingsland W.I. At the October meeting Carole Dowding spoke about her life in fashion. She was in various occupations including as a helicopter pilot before joining Charles of the Ritz. They later folded and she went to Christian Dior, where she was employed for fifteen years, initially behind the counter, and then she assisted at fashion shows in the capitals of the world . Mrs Dowding showed us pictures of the Dior creations, particularly his first show in 1947 when he introduced the New Look. Christian Dior perfume was also introduced on the same day. He used the colours grey, white and pink for many of his designs as these were his mother’s favourite colours. He created clothes for famous women, including Marlene Dietrich, the Duchess of Windsor, Jackie Kennedy and Eva Peron. After Christian Dior died John Galliano took over as designer but had to conform to Dior’s style. The lily of the valley is the emblem of the House of Dior and small sprigs of the flower were sewn into the hems of the dresses. The next meeting on November 8th will be the AGM followed by a demonstration on making Christmas decorations. Pat Hughes

Nature Notes 11/10/17 As the leaves flutter down from the trees, their job in 2017 completed, it would seem an appropriate time to make these my last ‘Nature Notes’. It is the time when the Autumn Colours are at their best, awaiting the first frosts. Do we make enough time to observe all this? It is a while since Lady Alethea, delivering the Kingsland news, suggested I write a few lines. In those days it was common to see and hear Curlews, Lapwings, Skylarks, Yellow Hammers and to see Sandmartins in large numbers. The last few years are the first in seventy years when a Dipper has not nested by the weir or mill wheel. Why? The fish population in the river is much reduced also. Plenty of Mayfly around, but the ‘rise’ of the Trout practically unseen. There are virtually no eels either. It is a long time since during our Autumn ‘run’ we were able to catch 112 over 23 hours, those averaging 1½ lbs. The presence of Otters, Mink and Herons a factor, but they were always about. Swallow numbers have increased, but not Starlings, House Sparrows, Wrens and Song Thrushes. A nice hatch of young Mallard gradually disappeared. Do we need a hard winter with snow to rebalance nature? Who remembers 1947 when the river froze over? Badgers, Foxes and Rabbits are plentiful. The heated debate about badgers and bovine T.B. continues! Happy Christmas to all readers – lots of nice presents from nature! R.W.H.

Editor’s Note This will be the final ‘Nature Notes’ signed by RWH as I explained last month. I would like to pay tribute to the interest he has generated amongst his readers and to his

regular reliable output. Many Thanks!! I have received a contact from a volunteer brave enough to wish to follow in his footsteps, so we look forward to the first set of ‘new’ notes in December. The following is an unsolicited tribute to RWH from a reader. David Noon Praise for R.W.H. What a sterling job R.W.H. has done over the years. His Nature Notes were always the first page we looked for. So enjoyable! His inimitable style will be sorely missed and a hard act to follow. Thank you R.W.H. from Carolyn Mills

Kingsland Bowling Club (midSeptembermidOctober 2017) – roll up for winter! Well, when we turned up for our last Club Night on 3rd October, we thought the Sahara had come to Kingsland as autumn maintenance took place and sand strewed the green. (I did tentatively suggest that we changed to camel-racing next year, but apparently camels get the hump even more often than bowlers.) Seriously, folks – another great season, thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of all on the Committee and all elves, pixies and wizards working magic, both on the rinks and behind the scenes. The Sunset Shield, our final competition, took place on 23rd September; a very enjoyable day with a fine spread of cakes for tea, and Tess, Kevin and Fred emerging victorious - and many of us appreciated playing triples, so having that extra bowl to deliver. The hamper draw was very popular; thanks again to Carol and Sandra for overseeing this. The result saw Wally and Marge Cole deservedly winning the big one – we add our profound gratitude for all their support and encouragement over so many years, and for all Wally’s input as Trustee. Next came the KBC Presentation Dinner on 6th October – a convivial and often hilarious evening, as Competition Secretary Kevin turned from MC into Comic Relief and was unstoppable – and so was the laughter. Many thanks to Bowls Hereford Ladies President Ann Walters and to Men’s President Alex Lowe and partner Ann for gracing our event, giving us words of wisdom and giving out prizes. It was great to see so many members and guests having a good time; we congratulate the Corners Inn, Kingsland on providing such a comfortable and welcoming venue. What to do without a jack to aim at?! – fortunately for some, indoor bowls Leagues

have got going at Leominster Sports Centre – but sadly the Indoor-Outdoor Club League is not on this year, so Kingsland has no official team in play, though a number of members are bowling in individual groups – good luck to all! All is not lost, however, even if bowls are in hibernation – Splendid Social Sec Stuart has already organised events through the winter. There’s a Cheese & Wine Evening from Pat and Tess on Friday, 3rd November, (members and guests £6); then traditional Rat Racing (camels may be substituted) from Jim and Jane and friends on 17th November; there’s a Quiz Night on Friday, 1st December. Then we have two of our major pre-Christmas events KBC Annual Bingo at the Kingsland Coronation Hall on Wednesday. 6th December; and Christmas Lunch on Sunday, 10th December, from the man who’s always at the cutting edge – our very own GreenKeeper and Chef d’Equipe/de Cuisine, Malcolm Morgan (by ticket only, £10) . See you all at our Winter Games – bring your friends and your fun! If you want to know more about us, please feel free to contact me: Susanna Checketts 770546

Luctonians Sports Club Thanks to modern technology the weekly ‘Securcom Lucsline, now on issue 377, goes all over the world, so perhaps Kingsland Residents will already be updated on club events. There are plenty of such events in a variety of activities, all overseen by a strong committee. This group meets each Friday with the paid officials to address problems and to plan future events – usually a lengthy agenda. Basically the club is strong but it is never sensible to relax. New members are welcome and the support of old ones is much valued – have you paid a sub? See you in the bar! R.W.H.

Royal British Legion Branch Meetings The turnout at our Social on 20th October was down on usual numbers but nevertheless raised £87. The next meeting will be on 6th November at the new time of 12.00 noon Bingo Night The Bingo Night on 14th October raised a grand total of £1096. We wish to thank Betty Lister and her team of helpers for all their hard work in preparing for this major fund raiser. We also wish to thank all those who gave such generous donations of prizes. The event has given a much-needed boost to our funds before our contribution to the Poppy Appeal and other expenditures. Churchyard Bench The two garden benches we installed in the churchyard to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of our branch have been declared unfit for further use and have been removed. A new bench is on order from Hop Pocket store and John Morris has kindly undertaken the task of installing it. Susan Ewart of Kingspan has informed me that the Company will make a gift of £300 to cover the cost of the bench. We want to thank Kingspan for this most generous donation to our fund. Advertising in the Kingsland News. (from 1/3/17) This monthly publication is circulated to every household in Kingsland Village (Print run 530) free of charge. Advertising is accepted (provided the material is fit for publication) on completion of the form below, and payment should preferably be by cheque to “Kingsland P.C.C. Bookstall Account”. The system used to produce the magazine is literally black & white only, greys are not distinguished and photographs do not reproduce well, though line drawings are fine. Advertisers should make copy as clear and brief as possible, since very close, small, type becomes difficult to read. The full page size is A5 (portrait) (195 x 130 mm) so the fractions of a page are A6 (landscape) (130 x 90 mm), A7 (portrait) (90 x 60 mm) and A8 (landscape) (60 x 45 mm). (Dimensions approximate)

You may know that Weobley has been part of a project to make squares for blankets for refugees, on behalf of People in Motion. PIM is a locally based, non-profit organisation to help displaced people and, so far this summer, 30 blankets have been distributed. Now the organisation is asking for woolly hats for adults and young people. So this is a request to see if you would like to make a hat (or two!) either crocheted or knitted to help these people? Anything from balaclavas to beanies – any style, any colour and pattern, as long as it’s warm. Thank you on behalf of PIM.
