SAFETY 1, FIRE 0:: BE WISE WHEN IT COMES TO

DECORATIONS AND WARMTH

The holidays are a much anticipated, enjoyable time of the year. But combined with winter weather, they also bring a greater potential for danger, in the form of a house fire. Many homes are, or soon will be, brightly decorated with holiday lights. And space heaters are used in a lot of homes to help keep the winter chill at bay. Knowing a few safety tips for holiday lighting and the use of space heaters will help you and your family avoid a possible tragedy:

• Never link more light strands together than recommended by the instructions. • Place wires where they won’t be a tripping hazard. Never place them under a rug.

• Turn off all lights when leaving home and when going to bed. Space Heaters • Space heaters should always be plugged directly into an outlet; never use an extension cord. • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable, such as curtains and linens.

• A tip-over safety switch is a must – it will automatically shut off the space heater if it gets knocked over.

• Make sure the lights you use are in good shape: no frayed wires, no damaged sockets and no loose connections.

• DO NOT leave space heaters unattended. They should always be turned off when leaving home and when going to bed.

• DO NOT overload electrical outlets. If you use more than one electrical cord in a single location, use extension cords or find a second wall socket.

• Only buy a space heater that has the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) label.

• Securely fasten outdoor light strands to keep them protected from the wind and avoid a possible safety hazard.

According to the American Red Cross, December and January are the peak months for house fires. Following these safety tips can help keep you and your family safe and warm through the holiday and winter seasons.

A TIMELY HUG IS A GIFT THAT’S ALWAYS APPRECIATED It’s the gift-giving season…and we have a suggestion for you – give a HUG. A KU Home Utility Gift certificate lets you select a dollar amount that we will apply to the recipient’s next monthly bill. The minimum amount for a HUG is $25, which can make a significant difference to a college student who lives off campus, or a senior citizen who is on a fixed income. Nonprofit organizations also greatly appreciate a HUG. Also, with winter weather just around the corner, a HUG can be an even greater help. A significant cold snap can lead to increased energy use and a higher monthly bill. Organizations and individuals on fixed incomes or on tight budgets can use all the help they can get.

Giving a HUG is easy. You can place your order by visiting our website at lge-ku.com/hug to download an order form. Once your order is processed, you will receive a gift certificate to give to the person or organization you have selected, and they will receive a credit on their bill for the amount of your purchase. Placing your order before December 15 gives you the best chance of receiving your gift certificate if you plan to present it to the recipient as a Christmas gift. Visit lge-ku.com/hug to learn more.
