David B. Smith President NSCAD University
Here at NSCAD University, we produce amazing critical and creative thinkers: artists compelled by the exploration of the idea, innovators driven to give shape and form to the abstract. Thanks to the continued generosity of the RBC Emerging Artists Project, we’re delighted to share the depth and breadth of this talent through our 2011 Graduation Catalogue. The NSCAD Graduation Catalogue features the best work of this year’s remarkable graduates. In the pages that follow, you’ll see what happens when talent and passion meet opportunity, when creativity is sparked, challenged and given courage. That’s what makes NSCAD University one of North America’s leading universities for the visual arts and our alumni creative leaders in their Welds worldwide. RBC’s investment in our graduates, which funds both the production of this catalogue and the annual graduation exhibition, demonstrates the corporation’s belief that creativity and innovation are essential to vibrant communities and robust economies. We’re delighted to welcome our RBC partners back for a Wfth year and thank them for believing in our university and our students. No project of this magnitude is possible without exceptional leadership, and I want to recognize this year’s interns: Katrina Bautista, bdes ’11, who designed this catalogue, and Lynette de Montreuil, bfa ’11, our exhibition curator. Your talent, commitment and professionalism are evident, and we congratulate you. If a university is deWned by the quality of its graduates, then this 2011 catalogue again conWrms NSCAD’s reputation as one of Canada’s foremost visual arts institutions. On behalf of NSCAD University, our faculty and staV, I extend sincere best wishes to our new alumni and wish you every success in your creative journeys.

VP and Branch Manager RBC Dominion Securities
As one of Canada’s most respected corporations, RBC believes that healthy, vibrant communities are a direct result of investing in creative vision and artistic talent. Like NSCAD, we know that creativity is the foundation of innovation and, as such, is fundamental to building sustainable economies and caring societies. Through our RBC Emerging Artists Project with NSCAD, we put our convictions into action by helping talented students make the transition from the academic to the entrepreneurial world of the arts. The annual Graduation Catalogue, for example, is sent to galleries worldwide and serves as an important marketing tool for these new alumni, while the Graduation Exhibition raises the proWle of the students and their work with the local community. Moreover, by featuring the work of NSCAD students in our RBC Dominion Securities Halifax oVice for our clients to enjoy — and purchase —we’re helping introduce these young artists to new audiences. Today, works by RBC Emerging Artists Project alumni hang in galleries and are displayed in creative institutions worldwide, and we’re proud to have played a role in helping launch their careers. RBC is delighted once again to partner with NSCAD to promote Canada’s next generation of visual artists: the Class of 2011. We celebrate your creative vision and artistic talent, and wish you continued success.

All the textures and objects photographed in the 2011 catalogue design were found in the studios of NSCAD. A simple theme like “mark making” shows we have learned to push our creativity beyond that—it’s the honesty of our ideas, our little stops and starts, the Wrst brave squiggle on the blank page that somehow turns into an entire body of work. My theme for this year's catalogue expresses that process from start to Wnish, using the marks we make at NSCAD, with the tools and environments made available to us. Showcasing the work made in our time here commemorates every exploration and discovery. I chose a simple A–Z arrangement of work, without distinctions between departments, allowing quirky but always interesting juxtapositions to occur. Consider it a collection of what happens when you learn and work in such a diverse community of students, teachers and studios. In the special index are additional ways to mark your NSCAD years. You can browse by ways you have assisted in diVerent departments; your shows at the Anna Leonowens, Port Loggia, and Seeds galleries; or by the strange, minute details that make a work unique. Congratulations, 2011 graduates! I hope that this catalogue marks the beginning of many fulWlling careers.
Lynette de Montreuil
Exhibition curator and coordinator 2011 Graduation Exhibition
When I moved to Halifax in the fall of 2009, I felt immediately welcomed into the artistic community. Halifax is a place that encourages involvement and collaboration—a philosophy also found within the walls of NSCAD University. If you look for help, you will Wnd no shortage of hands willing to be of service. There is a collective feel to NSCAD, where one can tell that the faculty and technicians do their jobs for the love of it, and for the community of people with whom they work alongside. They inspire us to push boundaries and not allow limitations of resources or materials to constrict our creativity. Here at NSCAD, as you aspire to evolve, the student body and faculty rally to help you succeed. We challenge each other, lift one another up, and help one another without asking for compensation or recognition. NSCAD is a pool of people who look to make the future a brighter place through collaboration. We are empowered to question not just what we can do, but imagine what the limitless possibilities might be achieved if only we set our minds to it. We may be leaving NSCAD University, but we will keep it in our hearts as we go.

On behalf of the NSCAD Graduating class of 2011, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all the community sponsors for the Graduation Exhibition and Catalogue. The support they provide to the emerging artists and designers of NSCAD is greatly appreciated. The generosity of our sponsors makes the opening reception a night to remember for the grad class, family, friends and community, creating an amazing celebration of the diverse talent of NSCAD students. Anna Leonowens Gallery and NSCAD University are proud to work with these sponsors who play an integral role within our community and we look forward to ongoing collaboration in the future!
