Oasen at BI and BMB

Pictures from Oasen

In 2014 the Department of Biology (BI) and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) inaugurated Oasen at Stenten, the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. The idea behind Oasen (the Oasis) was to create a learning space, in which the students could stay and develop their learning activities outside the classroom. The objective of Oasen was to create a common area buzzing with activity and learning. The students have certainly embraced this, and the area is used daily by a lot of students who are either taking a course or studying. Oasen decor By the entrance to Oasen lockers are available. Next you enter the lounge area, which is equipped with sofas, tables, an interactive screen and information screens. It encourages settling down, talking with others or studying. The other rooms in Oasen are divided into five laboratories: red, green, blue, yellow and black laboratory, as well as a larger bioinformatics room with computers available to the students, between classes. Oasen also has two “floating” theory rooms, from where you can see the rest of Oasen. Between the laboratories is the Atrium, which encourages group work with its round tables. Transparency and flexibility As is evident from the description of the decor, transparency was a particularly important element in the design of Oasen; no matter where you are in the laboratory areas, the lounge area or the Atrium, you can see what is going on in the other rooms. This fosters a curiosity about what is going on in the laboratories and in the other courses, as well as who else is staying in Oasen. The cross-functional teamwork around Oasen has provided BI and BMB with the opportunity of utilising rooms and resources in a much better way, which has increased the flexibility regarding planning of the teaching activities. At the moment efforts are being made to implement iPads in teaching activities in the laboratories. Almost all the rooms already have SMART boards.
